If you want to get technical about it, read the Silmarillion and it'll give you the whole history of Valinor (the West is the gateway, so to speak) so then you can make your own decisions about it's religious significance. I personally like to see the west as the original home of the elves rather than a heaven, as elves don't die unless they are injured/choose to... and then they go to Mandos to await rebirth. end or LOTR rant :)

Into the West IS about death. There is great religious symbolism in Lotr done by Tolkien. We know this because Tolken himself stated it. The ships and the Undying Lands (the West) represent death and heaven. Tolkien had said so himself so I don't see any reason disputing it.

Yes, Tolkien was a religious man; however, you have to conider Valinor in the context of the Middle Earth universe and that changes the view of it completely. Valinor was once a part of Middle Earth untill the Valar separated it for the safety of the elves that resided there, and to keep a distance from Melkor... So i don't really consider it a heaven - it just doesn't fit the stories as one.
