They do that because it is cheaper to run the sound through the radio than it is with the speakers which were always getting damaged or stolen. If you have to get a brand new speaker from the manufacturer now it costs around 35 or so dollars and a drive-in has at least a few hundred speakers so it adds up really fast. And the parts inside are not very cheap either. I just redid two speakers using parts from the manufacturer and it cost 50 dollars to fix two speakers.
That's the first time I've seen that one, and, I'VE SEEN A LOt OF 'EM. When I worked daytime cleanup at the now gone
-78 near Lansing MI, every so often we'd come across a pile of glass because someone was stupid and drove off with yhe speaker still in the window. And, on several occasions when I worked ramp security at night I'd hear a loud noise and have a general idea where the glass would be come cleanup time. Thank you for taking the time to post that little black & white gem.

Nobody figured out it'd be a good idea to add a connector so that the speaker could safely detach if accidentally pulled?

This is why they do the sound through a radio transmission now

I wonder when this came out? I'm guessing sometime during the early 1950s.
