Patriotism is defending the US constitution from all enemies, foreign AND domestic.
People often relate nationalism to patriotism which is simply ignorance. Nationalism is blind allegiance to a group to serve self interests. Patriotism is defending liberty for all Americans. A nationalist is an insult, patriot is a compliment.
Great exposition of the fact that patriotism/nationalism is not based on rational reason but an irrational, emotional need for belonging to a group. Too bad you won't admit the simple fact that nations do not create nationalists but that nationalists create nations. People and nations do not just exist purely and objectively outside of the minds of individuals .
Finally who understands patriotism..." Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it." George Shaw. Your birth in a country is purely based on luck. Patriotis is when you are proud for DOING soething, not for being soething purely based on luck. For example, I am proud to be a tennis player because I worked very hard to be one.
So are you being sarcastic for the first minute of the video? Patriotism is a poisonous illusion instill in people during their life, just as race, status, institutionalized education, Religion, politics, even sports! among others almost every single aspect of human thinking is corrupted for example an even bigger mind fuck would b "money" we have the knowledge to mass produce whatever we want as of today why we still need money? why r still people diying of hunger in other "countries"? why homeless people? honestly why?
You admire with reason. you love with reason. You love england with reason or because england created the emotion from media or through people directly.
Being a patriot is someone who questions the government and keeps it in check.Makes sure the government fears the people and not the other way around.A patriot isn't someone who follows the government blindly with out question, thats a idiotic traitor to the people and what we stand for.We need to rise against the government for what its doing to this country. We all need to bring the former glory to a nation once loved by millions and now hated by millions.Lets continue our glory!!!!!!!
Patriotism is a tool rulers use to stir up the masses to give them taxes and cannon fodder for their militaries. Gotta be proud of those invisible lines in the sand that separate US and THEM!
It was a joke. But if you ask: a takeover is easier than you might think. We Germans are experiencing that with Turks. More and more T.s come to Germany but remain T.s. The Turkish president Erdogan gave a speech in Cologne about 2 years ago in which he said that the Tu.s shall remain T.s and that assimiliation was a crime against humanity. At the moment, five of the 11 players of the national soccer team are of foreign origin and refuse to sing the national anthem because of their heritage.
patriotism has sadly much to with who is the best. in addition, you are a part of a nation by accident, not by your own achievement, which makes it dispensable to be proud of one's nationality, thus making patriotism dispensable as well. you could even call it dangerous as being proud of your nation almost always implies feeling superior to others which, of course, leads to international difficulties. i don't know why we split up in countries. we're all humans.
Well done. Thank you for a common-sense and heartfelt commentary that transcends our political polarizations. Whenever anyone wraps himself in the flag and discounts the patriotism of his fellow countrymen, he is--- at best ---a merely a self-serving demagogue. I offer this is a Marine veteran of Vietnam who loves this extended, diverse family whom we call proudly USA.
I started watching this thinking I'd probably disagree with it, but really he makes a great distinction between caring about people with similar backgrounds as yourself and blindly accepting all government decisions as correct and just. Awesome video.
I think this video is making a typical mistake IMO.
It fails as it compares a sons love for his mother with a citizens love for his country. Its not the same thing on any level. The relationship with the mother is a real and valid connection, while the love for the country is a false construct.
the same is true about the "family letters", love for the family is real, while love for the state is constructed.
Actually you interpreted it wrong.. it is saying exactly what you just said. one can have love for his country (as in the land, the people, etc.) that is valid and real i.e. be a patriot, and not love the state that rules over it, because the love for the state is a construct to be defined by statists like Sean Hannity.
I don't think so. You cant love claimed land like you love your family. Humans are natural travelers. Home is where you hang your hat. There is beauty all over the world. I like my land fine, but not enough to die for it.
But most importantly, you cannot love people whom you have never met, (your fellow countrymen).
So love for the "land and the people" is not valid IMO.
Think you missed the entire point then.. Its not because of beauty or pride or stationary instinct that patriotism is formed.. it is formed only due to a sense of belonging. This is why SA mentions Mexico and other not-so-beautiful places, e.g. mexicans do feel patriotic allegiance to mexico despite having left it behind to live even illegally in the US.
As for countrymen - I never said you have to know all your countrymen either, those that you do know are enough.
A sense of belonging is not nessesarly bases on a nation. Im not a patriot, but I have a strong sense of belonging.
The PEOPLE you know does not constitute the nation, its just your family and friends. As I see it, they have nothing to do with the nation. Your bonds with them would be the same during the stoneage, before nations. Its important to note that you don't love them because they are your countrymen.
Of course they have nothing to do with a nation.. however that sense of belonging is still patriotism. Try living in a foreign nation and disconnecting from the native "land".. its not as easy at it might seem.
My sense belonging is based around my family, my friends and the neighborhood in witch I grew up. I think thats only natural. Thats not patriotism to me.
Patriotism for me is love of, and devotion to, one's whole country. Not merely family, friends and neighborhood. Patriotism is simply irrational under this definition as I see it.
If our definitions are not the same, then there is no wonder that we cant agree on this.
LOL yeah this is a point of view i have been waiting to see for so long lol.

This is pretty common all around the world but America sometimes take the piss with it.
Patriotism is blind faith in one's country, like a religion. Oscar Wilde said, "Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious." Blind faith, demanded by the government. That is all. Egalitarianism breeds Patriotism but Patriotism doesn't breed Egalitarianism.
Note how the video creator subtly defines Patriotism as an ethnicity, that of course being European or WHite.
Thus he concludes, countries of a lesser race or a race other than whites cannot have patriotism. Seemingly odd logic but most White Americans were European rejects and this really proves it.
JoeMomma200, I think you are superimposing what you want to hear in place of what the Southern Avenger actually said. He noted the Mexicans, too! But as a white man, I say our self love is just as valid as anyone other.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for wich it stands one nation under god indivisibel with liberty and justice for all .
This is the oath of allegiance that all Confedrate soldiers had to swear to before they were paroled back to there homes after the war that was lost.
We as Americans have too much GUILT. We need to stop feeling guilty about everything in the world. We need to love ourselfs for who we are, the greatest and the best the world has to offer. Mexico is third rate and France and everywhere else in the world is not far behind them. We are the best.
The United Kingdom of Great Britian is also a wonderful first rate country. Hard to claim to be the best when you can't even offer your citizens adequte health care.....
Americans and guilt? Is this a joke? Americans never feel bad about anything, always try to act as the victim and shamelessly abuse their political and military powers. I don't think they teach guilt in American public schools. And as someone who knows both France and USA quite well I can say that France is so much better. It's a god damn shame, but America has been reduced to nothing but a pathetic, stupid and weak want-to-be empire in debt.
YOu're saying this because you don't know anything about France. As a french I feel ashame of my country. Not only because of its pathetic actual situation but because their hasn't been one period of its history where freedom could have won over tyranny. French are willing to destroy local traditions and impose the one from Paris. µThis is why they have somuch problems in Corsica.
your comments Xasew could apply to any group. Who does feel sorry for anything? And if they do who actually admits it?
There's plenty of guilt in American schools, but it has to do with 'white guilt' rather than anything else. We should not be taught guilt in schools, but pride, morality, virtue & honor.
Go fuck off and mind your own business. Nobody is worried about France - or going to stop you from enjoying France. Last time I checked though France had the same problems we do at home.
Lots of countries have collective guilt about lots of stuff. And if you don't feel guilt then ok, but at least be honest about it.
The school part was a jab at the crappiness of public schools in the US. I'm not seriously saying guilt should be taught in school, that would be retarded.
The last part of your post was really mature and made me totally change my mind. Such convincing arguments. And what problems might you be talking about?
Great video! I totally agree that individuals mistaken opposition to a corrupt government as being treasonous or unpatriotic. I believe if a citizen displays public dissent against an oppressive or unjust regime it shows there true loyalty to there nations and it people's security!
Why is Finland's flag next to Switzerland's? Because Finland's "neutrality makes them a joke" too(Finland participated in WWII)? Or are you talking about Finland not being in NATO or the Warsaw Pact(Sweden wasn't either, and they didn't even fight in WWII)? And btw, France has probably the greatest military history in the world, and no country could have won against the Wehrmacht in the same conditions as France(long land border and France still recovering from WWI in a demographic sense).
They didn't beat the Wehrmacht. The Germans ran through France. The only way the Germans were expelled was with help from many different nations doing more work than the French.
Xasew: I totally agree with you! France was an inferior enemy compared to the brutal force of Nazi Germany. Germany lost WW1 and WW2 for numerous reasons, one bold reason being the mixture of amazing leadership and poor vision. Do not confuse my interest in Nazi Germany with support of fascism though!
Where do I say that they beat the Wehrmacht? I'm saying exactly the opposite, but I'm also saying that they didn't lose because they "wimped out", but because they faced the most efficient and skilled army in the world. The France's military history I'm referring to is almost all the other wars, excluding WWII.
Yes, but you shouldn't compare it to commodoties. That's like saying because the price of oil has risen that a country's currency is getting weaker. The price of precious metals, diamonds, and oil can all rise because of high demand and low supply!
Philippe and Mnuge, you're both right. Euros and pounds are losing value, but not fast enough to cause much harm, not yet anyway. But the price of commodities is easily explained: when the dollar gets weaker, people who own dollars(lots of ppl) want to get out of it and buy commodities. So naturally the prices go up when demand grows. And even if only people with dollars buy gold, it will still affect the price in other currencies, because it's a global market.
Nazi Germany crushed France! Nazi Germany was militarily superior in all facets! Nazi Germany only lost the war because of Hitler's idealism thinking he could resist the Imperial mite of the Britain's Empire, Russia's amazing military and industrial ingenuity, and U.S with its abundance of wealth, excellent military, and industrial power! Ask all historians and they will agree France alone against Nazi Germany stood no chance!
google 'WTMA' and you will find the website. I haven't heard the southern avenger yet. apparently he is live on 1250 ET. I'll try to listen on day or an other.
Well southern avenger mexico has its problems but geez, it's not all a dirt-poor-corrupt country, how about leaving charleston more often.
About france, can you really diss them for not participating in the "war on terror", you should giv them props for that, france is a great nation, unless you think of greatness as the ability to wage wars against weaker nations.
Whamii, I think that when the SA was dissing other countries he was merely presenting the supposed opinions of the kind of people who love the US for being strong and dislike others for being weak, not his own opinion. From his other videos it is clear that he would support the US moving closer to Switzerland in terms of neutrality and that he does not support the way the "War on Terror" is currently being conducted
excellent! Reminds me of that speech Ron Paul gave, saying that "Let not those who love the power of the welfare/warfare state label the dissenters of authoritarianism as unpatriotic or uncaring. Patriotism is more closely linked to dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security."
All Southerners who love the COnfederate flag should understand EXACTLY what he is talking about. We do not love because; we love despite. The South IS home.
America as a "proposition nation" is another story entirely.
I heard Romney won Michigan. You know right before i left to vote i saw Romney on the tube telling how personal Michigan was to him and how he was going to help. Prediction if that idiot wins, we'll never hear from him again
Webster's 1828 defins patritism, n, love of one's country; the passion which aims to serve one's countrty, either in defending it from invasion, or protecting its rights and maintaing it's laws and instituions in vigor and purity. Patriritism is the characteristic of a good citizen. the nobelest passion that animulates a man in the character of a citizen.
As most are beginning to see, a Bill of Rights no longer protects us from our enemies within. Our constitution is based upon Biblical laws and statutes, as is the Bill of Rights. I am not speaking of the mainstream theology about us, but the one the founders believed in. Our rights are God given, and a piece of paper is meaningless without the Spiritual power behind it.
France was one of the first countries along with the USA to adopt its déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen, they did it in 1789. In Switzerland it's part of the constitution, called Bundesverfassung, and even the Germans finally got it right with the "Grundgesetz" in 1945. And these are just the ones I know by name, every European country has one.
The European Union even has a separate list, the convention. That's why we don't have the death penalty.
the united states is the best country on earth because you can totally gut its constitution and enslave the populace in a tyrannical police state and the people won't even notice or care.

Patriotism thus goes hand in hand with Nationalism and are an act of stupid worldly pride.
It fuels superiority complexes, and the tempt to destroy anything it can't assimilate to its typical ideals.

JoeMomma2002 3 years ago
JoeMomma200, I think you are superimposing what you want to hear in place of what the Southern Avenger actually said. He noted the Mexicans, too! But as a white man, I say our self love is just as valid as anyone other.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for wich it stands one nation under god indivisibel with liberty and justice for all .
This is the oath of allegiance that all Confedrate soldiers had to swear to before they were paroled back to there homes after the war that was lost.
Get over it allready God Bless The U.S.A

Solid thoughts. However, it makes more sense to substitute "is" for "should" in some instances because of the nature of your argument.

We as Americans have too much GUILT. We need to stop feeling guilty about everything in the world. We need to love ourselfs for who we are, the greatest and the best the world has to offer. Mexico is third rate and France and everywhere else in the world is not far behind them. We are the best.

Xasew 3 years ago
YOu're saying this because you don't know anything about France. As a french I feel ashame of my country. Not only because of its pathetic actual situation but because their hasn't been one period of its history where freedom could have won over tyranny. French are willing to destroy local traditions and impose the one from Paris. µThis is why they have somuch problems in Corsica.
philippe1985 3 years ago
your comments Xasew could apply to any group.
Last time I checked though France had the same problems we do at home.
willyrobinson 3 years ago

UNKNOWNPOW 4 years ago
Totally agreeing with you about patriotism. So all in all, great video.

Xasew 4 years ago
They didn't beat the Wehrmacht. The Germans ran through France. The only way the Germans were expelled was with help from many different nations doing more work than the French.
l2shinigami 4 years ago
Xasew: I totally agree with you! France was an inferior enemy compared to the brutal force of Nazi Germany. Germany lost WW1 and WW2 for numerous reasons, one bold reason being the mixture of amazing leadership and poor vision. Do not confuse my interest in Nazi Germany with support of fascism though!
UNKNOWNPOW 4 years ago
Where do I say that they beat the Wehrmacht? I'm saying exactly the opposite, but I'm also saying that they didn't lose because they "wimped out", but because they faced the most efficient and skilled army in the world. The France's military history I'm referring to is almost all the other wars, excluding WWII.
Xasew 4 years ago
We can say that France won the economic war, hence the value of the dollar is below the Euro.
mnuge76 4 years ago
That doesn't mean anything. The euro is not doing good. Don't compare it to the bad currencies like the dollar. Compare it to gold or silver.
The crash of both euro and dollar is the illustration that both welfare and warfare state cannot work and never will.
philippe1985 3 years ago
Disagree, because the British pound is quite sound...and strong.
mnuge76 3 years ago
The British pound went from £250 / ounce of gold to £450 in less than 3 years. I don't call that sound money or strong.
The liberty dollar is strong. The rest of the currencies is just paper.
philippe1985 3 years ago
Yes, but you shouldn't compare it to commodoties. That's like saying because the price of oil has risen that a country's currency is getting weaker. The price of precious metals, diamonds, and oil can all rise because of high demand and low supply!
mnuge76 3 years ago
or printing of money. If America kept the gold standard, the price of oil would still be the same.
philippe1985 3 years ago
possibly....possibly....you just never know these days....
mnuge76 3 years ago
Philippe and Mnuge, you're both right. Euros and pounds are losing value, but not fast enough to cause much harm, not yet anyway. But the price of commodities is easily explained: when the dollar gets weaker, people who own dollars(lots of ppl) want to get out of it and buy commodities. So naturally the prices go up when demand grows. And even if only people with dollars buy gold, it will still affect the price in other currencies, because it's a global market.
Xasew 3 years ago
Nazi Germany crushed France! Nazi Germany was militarily superior in all facets! Nazi Germany only lost the war because of Hitler's idealism thinking he could resist the Imperial mite of the Britain's Empire, Russia's amazing military and industrial ingenuity, and U.S with its abundance of wealth, excellent military, and industrial power! Ask all historians and they will agree France alone against Nazi Germany stood no chance!

Because they earn like 5 times more in the us.

whamii 4 years ago

Webster's 1828 defins patritism, n, love of one's country; the passion which aims to serve one's countrty, either in defending it from invasion, or protecting its rights and maintaing it's laws and instituions in vigor and purity. Patriritism is the characteristic of a good citizen. the nobelest passion that animulates a man in the character of a citizen.

it is the constitution that defines us as americans.
as americans, we define our selves by our constitution.
it is the constitution that makes america the best.
people forget that other countries don't have a BILL OF RIGHTS, and that they live in fear of their own gov.
most of europe has no bill of rights.
ahowell71 4 years ago
As most are beginning to see, a Bill of Rights no longer protects us from our enemies within. Our constitution is based upon Biblical laws and statutes, as is the Bill of Rights. I am not speaking of the mainstream theology about us, but the one the founders believed in. Our rights are God given, and a piece of paper is meaningless without the Spiritual power behind it.
jkentc 4 years ago
En contraire, Dummkopf!
