"THE BIG SHOW" would have lasted a bit longer HAD more advertisers sponsored the program. That's why it lost money for NBC- only three sponsors sustained one half-hour (6:30-7pm) during its first season: RCA Victor, Whitehall's Anacin, and Liggett & Myers' Chesterfield. Would YOU like to sponsor a show directly opposite "THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM"? Nobody did.
This is taken from Tallulah Bankhead's popular "The Big Show", 90 minutes every Sunday night radio, that ran from 1950 til 1952 and was the most expensive Radio Show in Radio history! It would have continued if television had not come on the scene at the time, and closed out all the popular shows that had been on Radio. This show received the best reviews of any show ever put on Radio!
The clever song is ruined by her observing at the end that they're married. I wonder what impression she would make on someone who had never heard of her.
You misunderstood my comment. Of course they were not really married (as anyone at the time knew - it would have been the strangest couple of all time) but the raciness of the song is diminished by pretending at the end that they were. It was a form of censorship.
This is awesome!!

I love hearing her southern accent flare a little in this recording! She was born in the town I live in, so awesome.

FUNNIEST VERSION of this song I have ever heard!
To one merrihew, it's not about censorship, it was done that way in purpose -- for HUMOR. It worked.
