We are not concerned with making a plowpan. I wonder how much truth is in that because we have been plowing for a long time and have never formed one. We only plow ground that does not erode. The ground which suffers from erosion is no-tilled.
Please note the spring cushioned bottoms on this plow, for rocks and other underground obstructions- rollover, while nice, usually not available with that feature. And if you've got rocks /stones, better have spring reset bottoms.
Cummins has their fingers in a lot of stuff. Our new 6050 New Holland has a Cummins fuel system on an Italian engine. They did that to get it EPA compliant.
The 8970 had a N-14 cummins rather than a 619 like it's smaller siblings had(8870,8770) It is the perfect engine for the tractor it was a great move by Deere. This one is an early one, it's a 1994.
often wondered why reversible or turn over plows haven't caught on over there in the states, very rare to see semi mounted one way plows here in the UK
I have wondered the same thing. I have talked to some of my friends in the UK to try and see why this is and I think it's because turn over plows usally don't have coulters to reduce weight. We really need coulters for our tough residue. Also mabey because there is not as many manufactures making these sorts of plows here in the US. It defiantly is a question I have thought about alot.
We have a set of 3 bottom Oliver rollover plows, they have coulters on them, I think it depends on the area your in. We have two farms, one in W. Pa and the other in E Ohio. Nephew and I went down the other side of Harrisburg this spring to look at a rototiller and the dealer had at least 8 sets of JD rollover plows. Even the 5 bottom ones had coulters on them.
@DFarms001 We use turnover, or flip plows exclusively in Georgia. Most farming in my are of the us is conventional till. We farm mainly cotton, penuts and a little corn and beans. The only time anyone here plows is with peanuts. We used rollover plows mainly until the early nineties. Now we use switch plows which just pivot horizontally. they are alot easier on the 3pt lift system of the tractor. You never see coulters on our plows unless they are ancient 3pt plows.
@DFarms001 Yea me too. We would love to have the soil types to do the type of farming yall do in Illinois. We can grow 200 bu corn but you go broke on the irrigation costs. Our ground is sand loam with about four inches of "topsoil". I hope to see the farms out in the midwest in person someday. I've been to Mt. Vernon on my way to Kansas City Ks. when i was traveling to the FFA convention but it was at night.
I have wondered that very same thing. I think a reversible plow would be great to have, but definetly not fully mounted. Why is it that in the UK when plowing you leave such a narrow headland and have to stop and back up?
Changed over from conventional plow to a reversible in 1996,best move i ever made.I now use a five furrow lemken fully mounted, set at 16in behind a 4cyl,100hp Valtra 6550 without much problem.Your point about our headlands,is more a reflection on our small fields.A couple of tractor lengths is normally ideal,as you come out of the furrow, lift, turn to left, shuttle back turning to the right while turning plow over, shuttle forward turning to the left,in to furrow, drop plow and on your way! easy.
You couldn't ask for anything better! The tractor will pull the plow at 6.2 mph and the engine is only turning 1500 rpm. The same goes for pulling the 726 mulch finisher (15ft)in the spring at 7.2 mph and only 1500 rpms. I won't be buying another tractor without an IVT transmission.
I'm glad to see someone else is still plowing these days. I have a JD 7520 w/ IVT and I'm pulling a very old Overum 5 furrow semi mounted cutting 16 inches. I'm currently looking at buying a JD 2810 6 furrow semi mounted plow to replace the old one. Keep up the good work!
Hey, great video. What is up with the 10th furrow not flipping the ground over fully? Something broken in the video? We run 2 Deere plows, an 2810 with 8 20's and a 2800 with 7 20's. I'd like to get a 3710 like yours but semi mount.
I am not sure what is going on. The trash-boards were laid down all the way and that streak was still showing up. It could be that the tractor does not run over the stocks all the way out there. This is a very nice plow the beam is much bigger than the 2810's.
It has 440 hp and it came from the factory originally at 400 hp. It is actually pulling quit hard this year but this plow still pulls alot easier than the IH plow did.
Well atleast you listen to some good music!!!

What do you do when the 3710 does not turn over all he residue?
generationll 2 years ago
Now that we have a chopping cornhead that is not really an issue anymore. If you take a look at my videos from this fall it leave no residue now.
DFarms001 2 years ago
could you plow all night?
631313amistad 2 years ago
Yes, I plow around the clock if there is ground to plow.
I look forward to going to strip-till someday in the near future so I can work half the hours and use less fuel.
DFarms001 2 years ago
Don't you have any concerns with forming a tillage pan? Also, are there any erosion problems using a roll-over? Thanks.

most companies do that case 335 385 435 and 485 have case but the 535 has a cummins. and versatile is doing the same with their tractors so

nothing wrong with the cummins n 14 the 6950 forager goes well with them

I thought they had a John Deere Diesel instead of Cummins? Even though Cummins is the Best Diesel Engine. What year is your 8970?

@terrellfarms1 THanks for explaining that! I always like hearing how farming is done in other parts of the country.

dairyfarmer83 3 years ago
Only about 7-8 inches because it is pulling very hard this year.

Ahh yeah swath controls really really cool. Good work.

pretty damn boring with the robot steer i guess?

Not really it makes the long days go by faster. We plan on adding another system with swath control for the planter.
