To answer the question.. no, we're not an accident. Out of the billons upon billions of planets that likely exist, odds are that there must be thousands upon thousands of other habitable planets. We're not an accident, we're more of an inevitability.
Science also does not claim the big bang expansion happened and magically earth arrived a minute later - it was MUCH more complicated and took billions of years. That's strawmanning science, sir.
@YourBrainOnReligion I can agree with that. I always wondered, how much alike are creationists and evolutionists? If you really read into it, it could all mean the same thing. After all, how long is a day in genesis? A millions years or so? I see them closer to being alike than anything else, but that is just my perception.
@RobbyJ88 Genesis clearly states each day is a 24-hour period as each day specifically includes a morning and night. This is only one of many egregious and inexcusable errors in genesis. The moon isn't a light, man didn't come first, etc etc etc.
Funny thing is, in science common sense counts for very very little. For example, the majority of the area of an atom is empty space, and so are you. That's right, humans are mostly empty space. Does that make sense? No, but it's the truth.
Common sense is simply a judgment based on our limited experience. No human can conceive of how large the solar system is, let alone the milky way galaxy or the whole universe. Earth didn't just pop into existence as it is today, it took 4 billion years.
Great illustration. There is a God! It takes more faith to believe we were created by some kind of accident than to believe we were created simply by God.
It is so interesting to see all the different views people have. The video was fun, and I have shared this with a lot of people (Thanks to Bluefishtv) But there is a bottom line to everything.
Whether Christianity is true or not, I am a Christian because I want to be one. I like who I am because of Christ. No one can tell me otherwise.
be who you wish to be. believe what you wish to believe. If it doesn't make you happy or a better person, find something else.
Just not agreeing is intellectual dishonesty. You are basically saying "I don't care if what you say is true it doesn't agree with what I've been told so I just don't agree." When this teacher said that Jesus existed what was the proofs they provided? Probably none, it was an appeasement statement or maybe a concession. There are documents talking about people who followed Christianity but there is NO historical documents that are written by an eyewitness that mentions Jesus.
How are the gospels any different than the texts written by Mohammad or the Bahgavad Gita? When someone makes a claim against what I think or believe I go find out. I want to know that what I believe is as truthful as possible. When an authority figure tells you something ask them "How do you know?" Make them be specific. It is highly likely, as when I ask these questions, that they will not know. This is very sad and does not bode well for the truthfulness of Christianity and Christians.
I guess I might have worded that wrong. It's more like saying, 'I don't want to say I'm right, I just want you to know about Jesus."
I believe the teacher said that there were documents that described Jesus and co-alligned with the Bible. But i don't think he gave us any specific documents, so I can't really prove that what he said was true.
Exactly, and you need to remember that, especially when a pastor or minister tells you something. When someone says there is "proof or evidence" ask them what it is. Like I said often times they will be very vague or not know at all. If they do give you some evidence then read it. I'll give you some right now. Josephus writes about Jesus, go read about this and then try to look at it from my point of view and why I would object to it as evidence for Jesus.
and i don't really know how to respond to your replies, so i think it would be better if i didn't, otherwise i would probably make things worse. but i think it's really cool that you're researching to find what is true.
The Gospels clearly state their authors, usually at the beginning of each chapter.
At least, my Bible does.
Mine says who wrote it...Otherwise simple research will tell you. But, bear in mind, that although men actually wrote the stuff down, God gave them the inspiration and ideas.
He basically told them what to write. Some are parables, also...which were stories told by Jesus, like analogies.
Nice trick, post a new comment and include my name so I won't know to come back and look. Very honest of you Christian. Look just because your dumb ass bibls says a name at the beginning of the book doesn't mean that was the author. There are NO ORIGINAL manuscripts and even Christian Historians will agree with the ambiguity of authorship. You Xians always tout of proof then EPICALLY FAIL to provide any. If it's inspired then why is each gospel story so different from the next? Compare them.
sorry about the name thing. i used to just click 'post a text comment', but i hit reply this time so yeah :).
anyways, God doesn't need proof.
If you believe in Him and have faith, no proof is needed. for example, in the Bible it says that when Jesus rose from the dead, Peter (or one of the other disciples, i'm not completely sure which one) didn't believe he had risen. He asked Jesus to show him his hands (to see if there were holes from the nails). Jesus was upset that he had so...
...little faith. God wasn't us to be able to love him without him having to spell everything out for us. Just think about this: if God gave completely obvious proof that he is real, everyone would believe in Him because they just want to get to Heaven and be blessed by God all the time. God wants us to love him and trust & have faith in him all on our own. He doesn't want us to be like little robots who do everything he says because there's proof. he wants us to show strong faith.
Your reasoning if flawed. You believe in a god that would trick us and that is sick. I'm not saying that I need absolute proof but there is no solid evidence of a magician named Jesus even existing. I wouldn't need a god to appear to me and tell me himself to believe but merely a little evidence that the stories were true but I can't even get that. Plus I read the Bible, passages like Hosea 13, Numb 21, Acts 5 and get sick to my stomach, do you really want to worship that god?
I am flawed. I can never understand God. I believe that God would never trick us, he just wants us to understand on our own.
And I do believe there is solid evidence that Jesus existed. My World History teacher, who is Jewish, actually said that Jesus did live. I believe that God destroyed those cities because the people were denying God left and right. This was before Jesus came to save everyone, so God's wrath was very mighty. God sent Jesus so we could escape from his wrath and enter heaven.
You said you were not a Christian but non-denominational? So you do not accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior? Sorry if I come off abrasive but too many of you tout off assertions but never back them up. You try to explain things in a way that would only convince someone who already believes. You have little working knowledge of the Bible and expect Atheists, who often times know the scriptures better than xians, to just listen and accept what you say.
Non-denominational means not having a religion, but you have a relationship with Jesus Christ. I do believe Jesus is my Lord and Savior, I just don't think I need a religion to believe that. I believe on the basis of God's word and the knowledge he has given me through the Holy Spirit. It's true that I probably don't explain things in a way that would convince you. I'm sorry about that, but I just don't know how to do that yet, but hopefully I will learn.
The problem is if what you believe is intrinsically true then there should be no problem explaining it. I believe that gravity is real so I throw a ball into the air and show you. If what you believed was real and true it would never have to be re-enforced and people wouldn't fall away from it. You wouldn't have thousands of people who follow the same book but believe completely different. Christian means follower of Christ so you are also a Christian. So start asking why and how, you will see.
Do a little research. There is MORE DOCUMENTED and SCIENTIFIC PROOF that the happenings of the Bible and Jesus Christ are TURE than ANY other event in HUMAN HISTORY. And how about all of the people that died, went to Heaven, and some Hell, then got brought back to life moments after their death and have written books on their experiences and PROOF that God and Jesus DO INFACT EXIST. HOW MUCH MORE PROOF do you really need? We are NOT arguing with you to be right-We want you to BELIEVE in him.
HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA it's been 6 months and this dumb ass hasn't been able to answer me. Chrisrioux... you have been misled and I find it funny that you think i'm stupid but you are the one that has bought into the lie that Mtw, Mrk, Lk, Jn are the authors of the Gospels. Ask even Christian historians who the authors are and they will tell you that we don't know. There is a little evidence for Luke but not conclusive.
are you trying to stated that I was created out of something that can only be explained as myth and magic? Something in which this particular religion does not believe in. Call me crazy...but the the millions of galaxies out there...billions of planets...can we not be the 1 in a billion?
We (Earth) obviously are the 1 in a gazillion, aren't we? It doesn't say anything for your argument.
Are you then stating that we were created by a series of millions of accidents that somehow made you and me and all the rest of the world, nevermind, universe?
yes...it's beyond the comprehension of the human mind to understand that everything has always been, and because that is so, the series of millions of occurrences is extremely likely.
Once you understand the everything has always been, and always will be, it makes sense...
yes it makes perfect sense to me...because it has a more scientific standing then the idea that someone got bored and created everything...or that everything popped out of nothing...the first law of thermodynamics helps grasp the concept...
Make sense? Well: No. Straw-man arguments are rarely designed to make sense. They're not supposed to. Mischaracterizing and lying about the position that you oppose is as rude as it is dishonest.
Sometimes scientists think too hard and miss the forest for all the trees. Evolution is more than fairy-tale stuff they are claiming. In this movie ALL the materials are in place to create the different structures. In the case of evolution, there is no consolidation of matter after the big bang. Not to mention building infinitely complex DNA and proteins in the right order.
Well, in the case of science, remember the theory of evolution i just that. A Theory. It has never been proven. Anyone who would base their total belief system on a theory is just plain silly.
The Theory of evolution claims that everything in the earth and universe is getting better and more evolved.
The 2nd LAW of thermodynamics states that everything in the universe is in a state of decay. If that is true (Law) then there has to be a creator behind the design. If there is a creator, then science was created and therefore must point to the creator.
Actually, decaying can form something completely new. Such as when galaxies collide and create NEW stars, which create a NEW gravitational pull, and meteors can create NEW planets, and then a NEW galaxy has formed, even though it is still decaying from the moment it started, it just takes NEW shapes.
No one knows. But if you're defending God, I can go the same direction. WHERE DID HE COME FROM? Why would people believe he's always been there, but don't believe matter has always been?
The thing is, in the physical world that we know, an effect has to have a cause. God is not a physical being, but exists on a level of existence we cannot understand, removed from the concept of time. In order for there to be a big bang, there has to be a big banger.
This is a great video, I don't know where the creator stands exactly, but it brings up good questions.
