closedcircle1 thanks for pointing this out! Which is he, row from bottom and seats from right (or left)? What did he think of the movie? It was one of the last great WWII films on that scale, and depicted a painful and tragic mile post on the road to Allied victory in Europe.
0:02? Leopoldsville? did they mean Leopoldsburg? I live there! In Belgium near the Dutch border! yes thats my town on teh map xD the shithole of 10k ppl xD
My dad's cousin, Delford W Barker, died in this operation. Only 19 years old. He was a member of the 401st Glider Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. While trenching in,enemy machine gun fire shot him through the neck. They recovered his body in 1977. He died near Middelaar, Holland 3 Oct 1944.
@bebopbaby Well, that's very sad...Delford died for our freedom and my fellow Dutchmen and I honour him for that as the many other brave men who died for our freedom. God bless them.
@The91stallion Silly question.. but Tea has been a British staple since Britian was Britian. As for Golf, it is practically a national sport for them... Its like Baseball is to Americans.
Fox played the role of this British Gen Horrocks well. This scene is very good .. it portrays Horrocks as the classic British, puffed-up, ignorant buffoon general that he was. That utterly pompous, stupid-looking leather 'hunting vest' that he was so fond of wearing, says a lot about his persona. While on the topic of puffed-up, ignorant British generals .. Montgomery is another classic case. His Market-Garden scheme was a madcap one. Monty was way overrated. With false pride cometh the fall.
Tell me I'm wrong. Right at the start of the scene, when Ed Fox (as Gen. Horrocks) takes the stage, one of the assembled officers is fookin' Woody Allen.
I have met Edward Fox. He is trying to get us New Zealanders recognised for our effort in WW2. On of our commanders was Keith Park. Edward Fox is particularly keen on him. He is as well thought of in NZ as Dick Winters and Ray Spruance are in the US and Johnnie Walker and Lennie Cheshire were in Britain.
@hevblade Yes, but I think some liberties have been taken with certain aspects of the film. Things like some characters being composites of multiple real people or based on a real person. Also that part when the Americans charge the bridge and it blows up just before they get there, apparently that wasn't exactly the way it happened. Though, on the whole, yes this did really happen.
An absolute debacle.Badly planned and appallingly executed.Giving the germans their last great victory. The sacrifice of our heroic troops was a total unecessary travesty, The leadership, in this case ,a bunch of BABOONS.The evidence was there.A german panzer division reffitting near Arnhem. However, superb film and book.First class acting!!!
Germany unveiled FALSE economic system ruling the world,by getting rid of Brutal Taxes High interest rates Devaluations (dollar of no use) No Restriction to local money printing Unnecesary IMF credits Mass media, jew controlled Financial system, jew controlled Industrial limitations, jew controlled Commerce Monopole, jew controlled Tech+Services, jew controlled Catle and Grain additional fees to farmers This is why Judea declared war to germa ny 24.3.1933 Daily Express issue
A pile of crap and neo-Nazi fantasy. Some Jewish businessmen tried to organise an anti-German boycott that's all. How could 'Judea' declare war in 1933 when it didn't exist in any shape till 1948?
@38wonderfullife Yes, but he's far too excited. A high flag officer (lieutenant general: three stars) should be more factual, and cooler. Tell their stuff in more a matter-ofd-fact way. At least, that's my opinion - but I've never been, and never will be, a 3.star general... ;-). However, I think he ought to have kept his li'l pep talk cooler. Gheorghij
@Gheorgyi Horrocks wasn't that kind of leader. He was VERY unusual for a British general, ahead of his time in how he informed his troops. Factual? He used to visit the front lines and produce large maps, showing them what and how they were doing.
@mphrdldn Y'know, when I read your msg I didn't even remember what it could be about... Anyway, I'm sure you are right. And not only I have never been a 3-star general, I've never been on a frontline either.
You can not advance tanks up a single road without adequate infantry support. You will be picked off with panzerfausts and anti tank guns.
Almost all infantry were still mopping up in Nijmegen and the tanks needed refueling and rearming.
The small number of paratroopers might have expected an advance but without sufficient infantry support they would have been cut off further up the road.
Captain (later Lord) Carrington (a man with a reputation for honesty) said the exchange never took place.
You need to remember that after crossing the bridge, Guards Armoured was 8MILES from Arnhem. The ground forces should have been Patton's 3rd Army, much more of a hard driving force than XXX Corps. This has been stated many times by British, American and military experts from around the world. I agree. Gavin failed to take the town and bridge yes but Guards Armoured waiting 18 HOURS before moving towards Arnhem was criminal. Patton would have pushed forward and Germans could not stop them .
The movie is a lie. Guards Armoured Division stopped just beyond Nijmegen because 1. It was almost dark. 2. all infantry were still securing Nijmegen town and 3. they had to rearm and refuel.
Jim Gavin (82nd) should have taken Nijmegen town or at least the bridge on day 1 (17th sept) or day 2 (18th sept) - (AS ORDERED)
The movie is not a lie. Guards Armoured Division stopped after crossing the bridge and the U.S. paratroopers were astonished that they did not continue. Understandably after they had been slaughtered crossing the river in rickety boats and capturing the other end of the bridge. The paratrooper shown, played by Robert Redford, does not understand why they stop-just as the paratroopers did then. It is because they did not know the Guards Armoured Division's situation with their infantry and fuel.
