I cant even get mine to grow bigger than my pinky, I am using iodide free salt with a pebble on a pedestool made of fuzzy wire. It's growing on the fuzzy wire more than the pebble.
@IncospicousJoe Hmmm, I don't think the idodine free would make any difference. The pebble might be the culprit, try using something that will soak up the fluid better.
Wowwww!!!! i Bought some of that at a store it's not like a tissue tube it's a tree or a peackock thing but yours is more beautiful coz mine didn't grow!!!
I used to do this as a kid but with BBQ charcoal and inside a glass jar just when you place the charcoal in the solution you add a few drops of food coloring on top of the charcoal and it will look like a coral reef in a jar.
@CodyT625 Yes, and actually you SPECIFICALLY need Mrs.Stewarts Bluing, it uses a Prussian blue, Iron Compound, while most others use A Sodum Aluminum Silicate.
@nicotron1 Sorry I for the late reply, I don't get on here very often and I don't know if I get all the notices when people leave comments. Anyway, I just used plain old table salt.
@nicotron1 not anything special just table salt though rock salt could be better because i think its got more minerals in it if that has anything to do with it
freaking disgusting, anytime i see something growing out of something in that texture makes me sick to my tummy and makes me grind my teeth. yes its science but god its gross. i can handle seeing dead people over this any day
heres how it happens:when salt water evaporates it seporates the salt water from the water then it leaves the salt into what ever that poop is... makeing it normal water
Quick question, do you have to use Mrs. Stenwart's Bluing? I hadn't heard of it before I saw this video, so I searched it online. I guess it's supposed to whiten clothes or something. Is there any other detergent/chemical I can use? I don't even know where they sell Mrs. Stenwart's.
i did the same with just table salt and boiled water .. super saturated solution. and the carton roll like in the vid. salt is actualy poison in large amounts pretty safe still. but it beats the shit of adding ammonia, dont wanna have children play with that.
When I made this the crystal was very fragile and would fall off without much effort. I don't think there's a good way to take it off without destroying it.
Hv2O is, but if you put a normal 2 then it means that there is 2 of everything behind it. but I suppose it people didn't care about nessicary techicalities then you could say H2O is water. but if you wanna be lazy then HOH (hydrogen hydroxide) would be more accurate, and even be the same amount of characters, or O2H although that would be written incorrectly and not really mean anything.
@blablobla0939 To the best of my knowledge, it might work without it, I think the liquid bluing speeds up the process and gives better results. Try it without and see what happens.
A rock MIGHT work...but I'd be a surprised. I think it works better if you use a pourous maerial that can really soak up the solution. I think there was a question like this way back in the comments and someone gave a pretty good answer to it.
I'd like to see someone try it with a rock for comparison. Pumice, limestone or sandstone or porous...I wonder how well those would work. If anyone out there trys it, let me know how it worked.
Had a science kit that did it with rock before. Was in elementary school at the time and not sure if it is the same solution but it should work. Don't even remember what type of rock it was.

we did this in elementary school water, ammonia, bluing, salt and whatever dye you wanted to add. bluing is harder to acquire now days, probably in small towns with old fashion stores i.e. west virginia maine vermont new hampshire north dakota iowa utah, etc.
The liquid bluing is a separate chemical, I found it in the laundry isle at the local store. The ammonia is just the stuff off of the store shelves too, usually found by the cleaning supplies.
Yeah, I had some music at one time, just imagine Jimmy Hendrix playing "Voodoo Chlid" during the first half, and Iron Butterfly during the last half. RIAA rules got in the way here and I had to "Mute" it. :(
i cant seem to find the "Mrs. stewart bluing", can u use something else, to exchanged that? coz im doing a project on this. oh n the "ammino", what sort of household stuff can i use?...im got lost on that part =/
You should start seeing some small crystal formations in just a few hours, if I remember correctly, I first saw them along the sprial of the cardboard tube. I think it took a day or two to get the big crystals out.
Hmm...interesting. I did a little research and it may be close to it. But I don't know just what's in the Mrs. Stewart Bluing stuff, so it might be something different by the time the process is done.
I'm pretty sure these are 'table salt' (NaCl) crystals, as you are probably thinking of. I believe the solution in the bowl is ammonia and liquid bluing, so my guess would be that they are not edible.
hi, where can i get the liquid bluing and ammonia from? can you get it in supermarkets or something? do they have another name or can you use something else other than these 2 ingredients?
Most supermarkets should have these available. I have found the bluing close to the laundry section, and the ammonia close to some floor cleaning supplies. Any brand of ammonia will work. The bluing that I used was "Mrs. Stewerts", there might be another name brand out there.
You could try it, I'm not sure if it would work or not. Somehow I'm thinking it won't, but try it and let me know. It may take a lot longer for anything to happen.
You'll see small crystals start in just a few hours. This whole thing was done over a week and I made a new batch of stuff each day. I'm not sure how long one batch will last.
Originally it had music on the video, but thanks to the RIAA and stupid copyright laws, I had to "Mute" the music. I have been hoping to put some new music on, but probably won't bea ablt to do it very easily...besides, I can't think of any other artists to replace Hendrix and Iron Butterfly that would fit this video.
You should be able to find it in the local store or Wal-Mart in the laundry section. It's in a blue bottle, kinda easy to miss unless you're looking for it. There might be other brands out there too, I'm not sure.
Yeah, it had some music from Jimi Hendrix and Iron Butterfly, but the RIAA found it and I had to mute it. I've been meaning to try and get some music back on it, but I haven't had a chance to do it...I'm also not sure if I can replace the video without messing up the whole address and stuff.

"Bluing is a colloidal suspension of Ferric Hexacyanoferrate. This nucleates the crystal growth. Without it all you end up with is an unimpressive crust.
The ammonia is used to aid evaporation and speed the whole process up. It is not strictly necessary but it will take longer for the crystals to form unless you have some warm dry air movement."
I'm not a chemistry guy, so I'll take his word for it.

Here's a technical expination accouding to "Verm1n" who left this comment:
"Bluing is a colloidal suspension of Ferric Hexacyanoferrate. This nucleates the crystal growth. Without it all you end up with is an unimpressive crust.
The ammonia is used to aid evaporation and speed the whole process up. It is not strictly necessary but it will take longer for the crystals to form unless you have some warm dry air movement."
I'm not a chemistry guy, so I'll take his word for it.
