I find it amazing that two of the heaviest-sounding bands in the early-to-mid '90s were using guitars originally designed for the "retro" Grunge Market & "Pulp Fiction" Dick Dale-style surf guitar clean tones... Tommy Victor of Prong & Scott Ian of Anthrax with their Charvel Surfcasters. And they managed to not only sound but LOOK badass as well: I'd kill for copy of Tommy's red or Scott's Greenburst now... :D

Even though they had limited mainstream success, they had enough support from die-hard fans to make them a band that will live forever in the history of rock. It sucked during the nu-metal era to see fans give a bunch of talentless bands credit for a watered-down version of what Prong had been doing since the 80s. Overall i think they lacked an appealing and marketable image, and that was their downfall in the marketplace, not just the fact that grunge was the dominant style polluting the airwaves.

For some reason, American fans decided that there was only going to be 3 heavy bands representing them in the mainstream, and they were Pantera, Ministry and White Zombie. Helmet had success with 'Meantime' but that was about it.

It's just a shame that more people didn't support bands like Prong at the time.

Before Pantera came along and changed the game with Vulgar Display, It was just Prong and Godflesh that were peddling this heavy downtuned riff based metal and maybe one or two others before it was fashionable. Prong never fully received their dues as innovators though.

They sat back and watched a whole bunch of young bands get rich off their ideas during the nu-metal explosion. It must have been frustrating.
