I never knew Milt myself but I am sure I'd have loved him as much as my hubby did. My hubby admired Milt so much. My hubby also plays bass. You can see him over at my site if you type my name in youtube.
I recorded a VHS of the very same show (I archived it to DVD recently), one of the Tonight Show's great moments. I might try to upload the interview from this show, Johnny was clearly in awe of him.
He knew Milt when he was alive, oh yes that's the truth. I have a photo of my hubby with Milt and Danny Barker. It's one of my hubby's most cherished photos.
Milt was such a prince of a person. He played bass, along with Derek Smith on piano, Mousey Alexander on drums, Danny Stiles on trumpet, and Carmen Leggio on tenor at our wedding. Had to be the world's best wedding band ever.
Milt was so kind, he carried Mousey's drums because Mousey had a bad heart. Judge, you will live in our hearts forever!
Go Milt.... Im playing upright now but im playing trombone in jazz band but next year im the bassist... =] Milt is the man if you want to do research on jazz bassists check out the jazz bass book by Goldsby.
He's such a showman. Go on, slap that bass, baby! He's so good. And the lyrical content of what he's playing, makes me think he doesn't necessarily need the orchestra behind him.
I had the pleasure of encountering Milt and the great drummer and inseperable rythmn section mate of Milt's, Osie Johnson..those two cats did more sessions in the Apple than any other cats in the history of recorded music...if you were in the area of 48th St(near the original Manny's Music)you could see them and their roadies hustling from one date to the next.....super gracious gentlemen too!
You ought to check a book that has recently been published- it's called "Playing the Changes",by Mr Hinton-full of his photos and stories about his life as a musician, having played on more than NINE HUNDRED record
dates! Milt is not only a pretty good photographer- he is a very entertaining writer as well! HIGHly reccomended!
Milt was born in 1910, so here he is running onstage at 80 plus years old......and when he gets there he proceeds to bring the house down!!!
I had the priviledge of working gigs with him in NYC at around this period in his career. He was the most recorded bassist in the history of music. And a real gentleman!
This music is totally amazing, I think I just hear it for 100 times in a row

Hi jazzciggarette,
Actually, I think the reefer man was Al Morgan, the bassist for Cab just before Milt Hinton.

@JACOBASS95 yes, he knew Milt when he was alive. Milt passed in January of 2001. I remember when my hubby found out, he was heart broken.

It doesn't get any better than this - Milt Hinton sure was one of his kind and his photography was as beautiful as his bass playing.
