@raeseancavallari I saw her 2xs and the tickets were free. She actually sucked donkey balls real bad. I wouldn't never go see her again. She was in her prime than I can only imagine what she sounds like now. Can someone say AUTO TUNE!!!!
It was Mutt Lange who wanted me to write songs for Madonna. Lange produced Def Leppard's Pyromania album. It was in May of 1983 when Joe Elliott discovered me after they had been on tour with Billy Squier which ended in April. Lange also produced Aussie band AC/DC's Highway to Hell album and brought the Aussie band INXS to meet me. It was with Michael Hutchence who gave me the idea to write Borderline. "I live on the borderline" - Don't Say No Billy Squier.
@smokiebird06 Sorry but I always thought she was a douche and a big time scum bag!! What's up with her accent. You just never know how she is going to sound when she talks. She is so phony!!!
This song -- espeically the intro -- always reminded me of Stephanie Mills' "Never Knew Love Like This Before". Recently found out that both songs were written by Reggie Lucas. :)
I wish kids would stop wanting to be born in the 70s so they could grow up in the 80s. Hell, with as many disrepectful as are, they ought to realize it was the elders - their parents, namely - who lived through this. Why are they so quick to respect this decade, but not those who lived through it? Except for popular stars who lived through, whom they never met?
I was in the Army when this song was out. We had to do 25 mile road marches at night. I put a Walkman in an ammo pouch and marched to the sounds of Madonna and others.
I'm sad that I didn't grow up in the 80's. Music had more thought and had a *spark* back then. I love you Madonna and I'm excited for your next album!
@DiGiCharat9990 I think she was comparatively innocent when Borderline came out around '84. Her videos got "trampy" in '85 and '86 with Material Girl and Like a Virgin.
@nik8099 Take it from someone who was there. It had the same problems we have now. A few nuances are different, but mostly the problems facing people are the same throughout the decades (and even centuries). There was just as much cruddy sparkless music then. It's just it doesn't get played now and the good stuff from then still does. Borderline, and many others I could name, were that good stuff.
It was a far better decade than this decade as life was simpler back then and with nowhere near as much shit going down than there is now and the music was better and i would go back to live in the 80s anytime rather than now. There was real money back then that was worth something.Things did start to turn to shit by about 1987 though in some ways.
@peterwwolf not with the cold war and fear of wwiii still hanging over everyone's heads. and high violent crime rates in the usa, terrorism in the uk, divided germany, africa and middle east problems.. nah
So now we have planned economic destruction, problems in the ME,staged terrorism/terrorism,loss of liberty, the threat of WW3,high unemployment and crime,de-industrialism,poverty in Africa, endless wars and occupations, political and financial corruption and so on...
Nothing really changes except more of the same and worse.
@gc3k I somewhat agree with that. But guess what, MTV was covering music that they deemed to be the best in the 2000's. It's 2011 and many people are allready wanting to go back to the simpler times of the 00's. It sorta occurred to be that once a music generation has passed on by, it becomes good, but when we were in it, it was bad--like many people said music sucked for them when they were in the 90's, but 2 decades later, they absolutely love it and consider it a good golden age of music.
It's better to be here and now, because back then, this music sucked. I'm sorry but it did. It takes being here, being in this decade to see that this music is great in comparison. That and the memories, because nostalgia makes everything better with time.
It's amazing how much this track makes people feel nostalgic for a time gone by... I suppose the modern era is just a bit too bleak. I'm glad I lived during the period as it was a whole heap more positive than the present day. Viva '80s!!! Thanks for the track Madonna. :)
@HighgateSamphire I'm 25 and i really wish i would have lived my teenage years-20's through the 80's...i think it would have been a much better time to live.
@Bectinakolary Well, music seemed a bit more 'carefree' in the '80s, maybe not as 'worthy', but definately more fun. Every musical act these days seems too concerned with trying to be 'cool' rather than entertaining the public. Hip hop and R&B has put all music into one basket... and it's a very dull basket indeed. Every era does have it's gems though, so enjoy what yours had to offer, too :)
@dgdhqgdyukqud Borderline is the most likeable track of her early career, modern Madonna has given in to the music industry I'm afraid and has lost her soul to the dullards of modern pap. In fact, I only like her stuff up to '86, then she seems to take a few wrong turns. She's a talent, though, there's no denying it :)
@krystlerita Ahhh right at the edge! I feel like being born in the 70s would've been perfect. You get to have somewhat vivid memories of the great 70s, but you will remember and enjoy everything from the 80s. 1980s: Music's PRIME.
@krystlerita;It's great you like 80s music- I'm a big fan of it too (and this is a great song).
But with respect, it *really* grates when people feel entitled to say nostalgia-blinded nonsense like "[the 80s were] such a simpler, happier time" for a decade they're not old enough to have had any meaningful first-hand experience of (you say elsewhere you were born in 88) simply because they like the pop culture of the decade and view things through that selective, nostalgia-biased perspective.
@NotATube I was born in the 70s and love 70s music and also love 80s music ; ) But we weren't the same as the kids today-it was a different time (without pcs, mobiles and all the consumerism) that is here now : ( less complicated times. Simpler I think they were-playing out with mates and having imagination, playing board and card games for hours : ) Happier-im not sure but i didn't see or feel the pressure that i see my kids face tody ; ) Nostalgic? I know what I prefer.
@sharonmcgrath9; Your mileage may vary. I didn't say that the 80s were all bad, but the blanket "simpler, happier" time comment without further context, and the pat dismissal of the cold war were chocolate-box nostalgia (just like that applied to earlier ages) by someone who hadn't even lived through the decade confusing their liking for 80s pop culture with experience of the decade as a whole.
@drbayoms; "Wow, you are truly an asshole [..] STFU"
ORLY? I didn't like the "chocolate box" simplification of the 80s (I doubt *any* decade was that great at the time!), and explained why. The 80s were far from uniformly great. They weren't uniformly bad either- I liked a lot of the music.
But at any rate, I wasn't the one going around personally insulting people with names like "asshole" and telling them to "STFU". Only a *real* asshole would do something like that ;-)
@drbayoms; Well, let's see. Your YouTube comment history (Google drbayoms site:youtube.com) shows you're a rather obvious troll and/or attention whore, so whatever :-P
I would never admit to another person that I took the time to Google their Youtube name so I could get some history on them. That strikes me as a little feminine.
It ranks up there with:
*A girl calling the guy she has a crush on just to hear his voice, and then hanging up.
*Why not just drive by my house to see if I am home?
@sharonmcgrath9; (continued) As for the 80s having "less consumerism"; well, that says more about how bad things are now than about the 80s. The 80s were very consumerist, with Reagan and Thatcher, materialism and yuppies, etc. It set the scene in many ways for the modern world.
Remember all those cartoons that were made for the purpose of promoting the toy line (and not vice versa)?
Board games?- it was during the 80s that computer games first went truly mass market!
@krystlerita; (continued) You say "well, except for that whole unpleasant Cold War thing".
You mean the same cold war that meant there was still a very tangible risk of nuclear war and terrified me as a 9 year old?
Sure, with hindsight we all didn't die- and for that reason it's easier to trivialise it like you do, particularly if you never lived through it. However, no-one knew that at the time.
In short... 80s music, lots of it good. 80s life? Good and bad, don't get blinded by nostalgia.
@krystlerita Actually, AIDS had just hit the world in 1981 and no one knew what it was or what to do about what looked like an instant death sentence for millions. I don't think times were ever simpler. Be well and happy now! Happy new year.
@humannaturedj I was born in the 80's and although I did get to experience part of the 80's as a kid, I'm sure my sisters had tons of fun as teens in the mid to late 80's. I love this decade!
Let me be Quentin Tarantino (as it were), and tell you what "Borderline" is about:
It's all about the differences between the genders--specifically, how women and men tend to approach romance differently. Men tend to approach it in a more physical sense, but women tend to focus more on the emotional bonds. Hence...the character in the song expresses her frustration that her man apparently doesn't seem to understand her emotional need, focusing just on the physical.
I am the lead singer of the 80's band TAPPS and i am now launching my solo career. My first dance single is gonna have old skool madonna flavor. i love her! maryamzadeh/facebook
Why cant i stop listening to her? Her music strikes a nerve in me and i think its because my subconcious is remembering her from when i was like 1-5.... Shes my favorite artist of all time... Saying that as a Doors, Elvis, Beatles, ACDC, Led... She beats them all i think.
I love this album, because it remindes me of how difficult times were with me and my 6 older brothers and sisters in the 1980's, and how when Madonna came out with this album, it made our lives more gracefull. we use to listen to this album for hours on end, especialy during the weekends with our poor Italian_Portugues friends and neighbors. Thankyou Madonna for breaking that wall of hardship for us, it meant alot. we are still poor ( hahaha), but rich in spirit when we here this album.
summer 85me and my older sis would go to the park that had swimming for 75 cents all day. She loved madonna, i would always tease her about being dressed like madonna. She died this last november she was only 40. I heard this song today and thought of her and how much I miss her..... wish I was back in the 80's so i could be around her... RIP Luly Love u forever.
I actually filled up reading your post. I am so sorry for your loss. She'll probably be up there with the angels trying on different looks. Keep smiling xxc
@MsPrettywoman74 Almost cried when I read this. Feel very much the love you shared through your powerful words. R.I.P. Sweet Angel xxxx Thank you for sharing Big Sis, it's these kinds of stories that remind us to be good to one another xxxx
@MsPrettywoman74 The manner in which you expressed your love for your big sis and how much you missed her caused the strings of my heart to be tugged in a way that I have not felt in quite some time. It reminded me how important it is to be the very best we can be every single day toward others, especially those we love that we may take for granted. thanks again for your excellent post...
I am a 77 baby and Madonna was my "Girl"too. I could only wish for someone like you to make a tribute to me too! This is my FAVE Madonna song even to this day! I remember it from age 7-8 till now more than any other song from her! You rock as a sister! I can only wish for a friend like you!
I love this song, but I feel like dismembering a bitch.

@drbayoms; Well, let's see. Your YouTube comment history (Google drbayoms site:youtube.com) shows you're a rather obvious troll and/or attention whore, so whatever :-P
NotATube 1 month ago
@NotATube
Don't ever admit that to anyone again.

@drbayoms; Ha ha ha, Obvious Troll is Obvious :-)

@NotATube
Obvious crush, is obvious.
Although I personally am not into that (you know what I mean). I'm flattered.

NotATube 1 month ago
@krystlerita; (continued) You say "well, except for that whole unpleasant Cold War thing".
You mean the same cold war that meant there was still a very tangible risk of nuclear war and terrified me as a 9 year old?
Sure, with hindsight we all didn't die- and for that reason it's easier to trivialise it like you do, particularly if you never lived through it. However, no-one knew that at the time.
In short... 80s music, lots of it good. 80s life? Good and bad, don't get blinded by nostalgia.
NotATube 2 months ago

She died this last november she was only 40. I heard this song today and thought of her and how much I miss her..... wish I was back in the 80's so i could be around her... RIP Luly Love u forever.
