  • A few years ago, I was introduced to a coworker at a new job-- his name was Duane Eddy, a big football player, African American and as I smiled and said really? that's your name? Sadly, noone in the workplace knew who I was talking about. Ironic ha ha -- this song

  • Simply a classic. Duane Eddy had quite a few hits including "Raunchy" "Pepe" "Some Kinda Earthquake" and "Rebel-rouser" but "Because They're Young" has to be his best.

  • This song has everything you'll ever need.

  • Duane at his best .. Great stuff

  • awesome!!! Duane Eddy, great movie too. amazing simple guitar with a symphony and oh what a sound.

  • Can someone tell me how to get rid of these Google ads?

  • @smokiebird06 sell your computer!

  • My Dad loved this..thanks for the memories !

  • Ah the good old days of music ..

  • This used to the theme tune used by D.J. Johnny Walker on his radio 1 show what a fantastic piece of music it realy brings back a lot of memories

  • Duane Eddy - The first guitar hero of rock

  • Oh yeh , Tuneeee

  • as underated as it gets- one of the best sounds ever DW

  • One of my friends bought this record in 1960 and we must have listened to it over and over at least 20 times, marveling at how cool it was.

  • where have i heard this music before from tv or radio

  • @abhudson14 Johny Walker used this as his start the show on Radio Caroline South in the 1960's. Midnight show. He did use it on Radio 1 for a while, I think in the seventies. However I do not believe he uses it today, shame really as it will always be his in my mind.

  • @TheDavidjoy I think he might have been on johny walker show in the late 80s on saturday afternoon when i started to listen to him

  • great music by duane eddy

  • This song inspired Jack Marshall in 1964 to write the theme for the Munsters.

  • Don't forget it was also the theme tune for Johhnie Walker Pirate

DJ on Radio Caroline in the late 60's

  • Isn't this Johnnie Walkers old theme tune

  • @mkbuddy Yep, believe it is, in fact it was probably one of the most used theme tunes in local radio.

  • @mkbuddy Played by Johnie at midnight at the start of his show on Caroline South. Remember the kiss in the car spot when lovers flashed their car lights from the cliffs which could be seen from the Pirate ship. I think Johnie may have used it briefly when he was on Radio 1 with a lunch time show in the 70's. I think there was a quiz called pop the question at 1pm during this show. I am sorry that he has not used it over recent years as to me it is his theme.

  • @TheDavidjoy

Johnnie Walker did use it as his theme song on Radio 1. I used to switch on just to hear it.

  • @theboyfromxtown Thanks for that, the memory fades a bit now and then a bit like Radio Luxembourg used too.

  • @TheDavidjoy

    HAHAHA! Too right it did!

  • i finaly found the non remake of this song

  • Could listen to the guitar in this over and over...

  • I never tire from listening to any guitar - but IMB the best are Duane Eddy and (someone you never hear of now) Al Caiola. Have so much of their music - vinyl and CD - and YouTube.

  • Geeeeeeeeez will someone please upload "Tuxedo Junction" the Duane Eddy version is THE BEST !!!!

  • I love Duane Eddy. I just download a couple of his hits. These bring back great memories! Thanks for sharing.

  • I remember this was also the Marlboro theme song

  • I always have to play this twice because I wish it was longer!

  • Duane Eddy may have played the song but according to my sources John Williams wrote it.

  • @sorris28

Because They're Young was written by Don Costa, Aaron Gold, and Wally Schroeder. This film was John Williams first credit as composer and conductor and he is listed as "Johnny Williams".

  • @sorris28 Actually, Because They're Young was written by Don Costa, Wally Gold, and Aaron Schroeder. The film was John Williams's first as sole composer of the score, and his credt reads "Johnny Williams".

  • @twang73 don costa played guitar and arranged it as he did frank sintara records gold wrote lyrics like taking o sole o mio and making it its now or never did john/ johnny williams do the killers there is more than one john williams

  • @spacepatrolman No, Duane Eddy is the guitar player here. Don Costa is a co-writer with Gold and Schroeder. John Williams (credited as Johnny) is the Academy Award winning composer.

  • @twang73 yea i know duanne eddy is a guitar player but don costa was a guitarist and they used 3 guitars on some of these dates sometimes bucky pizzarelli and al cailola like on runaway by del shannon and there is more than one john williams 2 composers a jazz pianist and a clasical guitarist

  • @spacepatrolman Actually, this classic hit record of Duane Eddy's was arranged by Bob Thompson. Famed guitarists Barney Kessell and Howard Roberts were on the session, Shelly Manne played drums and Red Callendar payed bass. String players are from the LA Philharmonic.

  • This may sound crazy but this song reminds me of Michael Landon. There must of been a connection between the two but i can not remember,Peace Desiree

  • great instrumental song

  • I,m glad such awsome music is still available for us. This is a true musician!

  • And to think this was the theme song of a movie staring Dick Clark! Great post, thanks.

  • If i remember rightly, this was the theme tune for johnnie walker on the pirate ship radio caroline, moored of the essex coast in UK back in the sixties..Great memories

  • Hahahaa OMG I can't believe it I finally found this!! This used to be a theme for a great nostalgic series at my Belgian TV called "de Préhistorie" which I totally ADORED, and now I finally caught it oooh THANKS SO MUCH!!!

  • @JiS01 Graag gedaan ;).

  • @CHUPACHIEP

    jeey je bent nederlands:D :p

  • @CHUPACHIEP

belgisch ook goed:p ... vlaams whatever

  • @JiS01 Lol I also get here because of that, and it still is the theme song

  • @JiS01

idem hier , heb er ook zeer lang naar moeten zoeke .

ne tip aan de vrt ze moeten de Préhistorie zeker en vast nog een keer heruitzenden

  • Another great tune, love it

  • thoroughly agree with pintofkimberley, still expect to hear Johnnie Walker after the music, so many memories, great.

  • Still expect to hear Jonny Walker's voice after this tune

  • for Euro viewers, the older ones remember this one as a Tune for a programme, nightly, on the english language Radio Luxemburg, 208 metres AM, around 1961-62.

It still sends shivers down my spine.... " do you remember lying in bed, with the covers all over your head, RAdio playing so no one could hear..." (Ramones : Rock $ Roll Radio). Duane was on UK TV today, oct. 8th 2010!!

  • Man that guys records sound a million times better than the cretinized crap they make today. Genius!

  • This song was 50 years ago no.9 in the world charts

  • Inspiring!

  • Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees j'adore

  • BUFALLO NEW YORK SUMMER 1960 ,WKBW Dick Biondi Show,Back seat at Front and La Salle Parks watching the approaches to the PEACE BRIDGE .. way before having fun was against the law

  • I am reminded of Duane in "A Thunder of Drums" where he plays a young cavalry trooper complete with guitar. There is a priceless scene where he is accompanying a couple of young lovelies, and Slim Pickens says to another trooper, "I sure wish I could play a geetar."

  • Thanks for mentioning the connection with the movie of the same name. It was something of a favorite during my teen years (15 in 1960) with Dick Clark, Victoria Shaw, Doug McClure, Michael Callan, and others who had TV shows. Didn't Bobby Rydell's "Swingin' School" get featured in this movie?

  • This song was 50 years ago no.10 in the world charts

  • This song was 50 years ago no.5 in the world charts

  • An argument could be made that he was at one time America's premiere guitarist. Of all the songs he did durring his late '50's early '60's hey day this is the one I liked the most. At the time I was around six years old (1960) living in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. About 8 years later when I was around 14 my favorite Top 40 Station, KUDL in Kansas City played it and for some reason a haunting chord was struck with me and now I know. It reminded me of some good times durring my time on the fort.

  • @rantrover I don't think anyone would argue. Duane Eddy is the number one rock instrumentalist of all time. More chart records than any other. Still going strong, and a new album just recorded in England, produced by Richard Hawley and Colin Elliott.

  • This song was 50 years ago no.8 in the world charts

  • This song is without a doubt the best instrumental of the sixties maybe of all time. It brings back such wonderful memories of good friends and a time when life was young and the cares of the world seemed so far away.

  • Twangy guitar...it had its own voice. And it always had something wonderful to sing.

  • How is it than one person doesn't like this great instrumental? Just terrific. Thanks for the post.

  • This song was 50 years ago no.10 in the world charts

  • Another one of many great instrumentals from the 1960's.

  • He's the man

  • I wonder if it would make the charts today, 2010? I would love to think so. They wrote such wonderful music back then.

  • This song was 50 years ago no.7 in the world charts

  • one of the great instrumental songs of my era.....Des

  • Hey this reminds me of the good old days

Listening to Caroline radio WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW so relaxing

  • Bruce Springsteen, was inspired to write "Born To Run" while listening to "Because They're Young". When Duane, did the Conan Obrian Show in January. 1994 Max Weinberg ( E Street Drummer) told Duane this..."Bruce played "Because They're Young" so many times for us (The Band) that I became sick of the song" a Video of this Conan Obrian Show was just added to YouTube. .

  • Duane Eddy, used a Danlectro Baritone Guitar on this song. He purchased it at Wallach's Music City in Hollywood, California USA. . He also used this guitar on the film score for "Broken Arrow" a film starring John Travolta and Christian Slater. Listen for 3 songs by Duane in "Natural Born Killers" and a song in "Scream 2".

Duane...used the string section of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on the "Because They're Young" recording session in 1960.

  • Duane Eddy, is still very active in Music. See him perform live at "The Ponderosa Stomp" in New Orleans, La this September 24th and 25th, 2010. Check out the Video of him playing "The Deke Dicerson Guitar Geek Festival" at the Winter NAMM in Anaheim, Ca on YouTube.

  • One of many GREAT instrumentals of the 60's.

  • In the 60's it seemed like Duane Eddy and the Rebels were coming out with a new release about every 2 or 3 months starting with Rebel Rouser. I was in a band at the time and of course we tried to cover each song. Great music for a great era.

  • I love this song and the movie. James Darrin. What a wonderful time in America! Wish we could go back...

  • this stuff always reminds me of going to the drive-in when I was like 7

  • jw intro on radio 2 the best dj ever along with the hairy monster

  • 1960... i was 16......

  • Long live the Twanging Guitar! LOVE THIS TUNE.

  • @OrionDenali

    Oh, yeah!

  • My favourite ' Pop ' instrumental of all time, less than 2 minutes of utter nostalgia, the start of my record buying career in 1960,never tire of hearing this fabulous melody !.

  • @flammasherman

I second that emotion! My fave tune from "The Great Duane" too! Wonderful song!

  • @flammasherman

I second that emotion! A great song! I too never tire of hearing it! Mr Eddy sure plays a mean guitar! THANKS for your comment!!! CHEERS! :-)

  • @JubalCalif So glad I'm not alone in appreciating this masterpiece,I still have the London American 45 and recently bought the very rare 78 version .Many thanks for your comments, you have great taste , Duane's the man !.

  • @flammasherman

I appreciate those kind words, mate! Right back at ya! Since you're a fan of the "Great Duane", you're OBVIOUSLY a person of rare intelligence, taste & refinement! :-)

  • @flammasherman I also started my collection in 1960. To this day I think that was the greatest year in music history.

  • @eboy828 it cant be because the beach boys didnt get a hit yet

  • @eboy828 Yes, very much agree.51 years on, I still sence that excitement of the first few 45's I bought which cost me 3 weeks 'pocket money ' per record !.No.2 was Eddie Cochran's postumus hit ' Three Steps To Heaven ' in the UK.A bonus also as my dear late Dad loved both Duane & Eddie as well !.A great time to be growing up with the 'excitemnt ' of the 60s about to take off. Can't think of a better time to be young !.

  • @flammasherman Totally agree flamm.....it was a great time to be young.................Chuck

  • @JOYOUSONEX Cheers Chuck, trouble is we didn't realise it then !.Roger.

  • @flammasherman 100 % my words ! No better teenage time - late 50th, early 60 th ....

  • Thanks for sharing this tube.

    Cheers from Belgium

    Eric

  • Dick Clark had something to do w/producing this flick. He even had a very small part. I'm glad he stuck to doing American Bandstand from that ratty little studo in Philly.

  • aaahhh johnny walker show on radio caroline hay ,now that bring back memories ,brings a tier to the eyes i must say

  • Know what you mean...in his R2 days it still will always be his song and he meant the message of peace and love

  • aaahh Honey Hit Parade on Radio Luxembourg on 208 medium wave in the fifties. Great music.

  • a great song and two minutes..a

    big instrumental sound !

  • Pepe by Duane Eddy is on here.

  • This was very popular the year I graduated high school. Great song! Thanks for posting it. Fran

  • I like the guitar cowboy sound. It's catchy.

  • Excellent stuff - I was born in 67, but I love this music - its brill

  • Reminds me of when I was kid back in the 60's at home with my Mum, Dad and 5 sisters such a lovely innocent time.

  • Thanks for this post. i loved this song back when it came out.

  • Ditto that,man...

  • I rtemember being in my uncles 1960 Chevy Impala. in the early 60's as a little kid enjoying the ride and hearing this on the radio. The cars seemed to have a certain nice smell in them back then. and we didn't even need seat belts. lol

  • don't make music like this anymore, at least we still have the records and memories, Duane Eddy will live forever

  • THKS!! I was a sophmore in HS when this cm out - I'm an instrumental music fan and I was in Jr High & High School when these great songs hit the air - loved it then and still love it now - way past 60!!!

  • Trying to find Pepe played by Duane Eddy 1960..anyone happen to have it?

  • This was a staple on Radio Caroline pirate radio in the sixties.Originally the theme from the movie of the same name where Dick Clark played a doctor..

  • I thought DC played a teacher or principal in "Because They're Young".

  • What a fantastic old song! It was an "oldie" when I started in radio in the early 1970's. You rarely hear it anywhere on the airwaves anymore...once in a great while on XM Radio, Thanks for posting this treasure!

  • there was a vocal version by ? answers please

  • I thought James darren sang it in the opening credits of the movie

  • This was also used by Johnny Walker as his theme tune. Ah, memories of the 70s!

  • i remenber this tune introducing radio luxemburg long before the mainstream radio stations played "pop" music. used to listen amid all the static. ah! such memories

  • Absolutely! Lux's theme tune! That was the point your day began. BBC Home Service or Light Programme - wall to wall-rubbish...you had to sweat into the evening until 208 came crackling through, all fading and static. And you listened to every single record hardly daring to breathe.....

  • Thks CHUPACHIEP. I still enjoy it; it's been one of my favorites since it came out - and that was in my teen days (over50 yrs ago).

  • Still in my top ten nearly fifty years and thousands of plays on

  • Just fantastic unlike to day.

  • Ashton palais roller skating saturday morning

  • the version on the lp called 'fonzies favorites' although very similar..but it really does sound better

  • I just buried my brother who passed at 60.This song was played before previews while color wheel rotated on screen at a little theater in NH we went to. We played this song at his Irish Wake with his childhood friends. Now THAT'S memories.

  • Sparwood8, I totally agree. I saw it too, and don't remember jack diddly about it, but I will ALWAYS remember this awesome song. I used to call in to our local oldies station in OKC and request this. Just plain love it!

  • Wonderful stuff! Duane Eddy knew how to play the guitar in a manner that got your inner groove going. Other guitarists seemingly try to assault their listeners with their screeching screaming wailing guitars...which can be cool for about one minute, then turns mightily offensive. But not Duane. He had the magic soft touch combined with a rebellious background riff that makes his music as fun, sassy, and fresh today as is was back in the late 1950s.

  • yuk

  • yuk..old jay needs a nu-ear or go wipe seve hollies dry dirty ho..

    eww

  • Oh Duane, why didn't I marry you when I had a chance!

  • I believe Jessi Coulter was married to

Duane before she was married to Waylon Jennings.
