I'm only 29.. but.. my whole generation and under is filled with dipshits that wear sideways hats and think they are "gangsta's". as sad as it is to say .. maybe a war would have made some appreciate life a little more.. rather than taking pride in hurting others.
come on people stop comparing jamey johnson and eric church they have different styles but both are great. In my opinion they are the two best country artists today and i will be a huge fan of both for life...they put on the best concerts out there bar NONE
man this reminds me of my papaw, and he was my step'paaaw but there was no step with him and i just recently lost him, but i will see again i hope, and this song just reminds me of him he was the best man i have ever known
dob, its that eric is doing that for the fans as well, i went to a songwriters showcase 2 months ago with.... josh turner, bucky covington, kelly pickler, and joe nichols. and joe just sat there, and bucky was enjoying the show from the other artists, and joe stood out bigtime. looked as if he was forced to be there. he sang well, but had no interaction with the other singers. BY THE WAY, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ERIC IN CONCERT, U MUST.... WAY DIFF. THAN THIS WHERE HE HAS TO BE SEATED.
Sorry, I like Eric Church. He's a Carolina boy and I am too -- but he didn't even know how to play the most legendary song in country music (He Stopped Loving Her Today). That tells me a lot about how serious he is about continuing the tradition. He's a country rocker....just like everybody else.
@mistascott007 I have no problem with what alot of people call country rock, sure as hell is better than that country pop bs. You know even Jamey has some some country songs that many old schoolers would consider country rock. Just because eric had trouble playing one song doesn't mean he doesn't know the traditions. Go look up "lotta boot left to fill"
@365cliff I've softened up on Church a little bit after hearing more of his songs. I still think Jamey's writing is on a much deeper level than Church and has more appreciation for tradition than Church does. Nothing wrong with some rock in country music, hell the outlaw movement was pretty close to rock at times. My point was that everyone who takes the Grand Ole Opry stage needs to know "He Stopped Loving Her Today" inside and out, backwards and forwards.
I like the stories of his grandfather that he tells during breaks in the song. it gives u a reality to it meaning that it was written from personal experiences and memories of jamey himself instead of just some1 writing the song for another artist. its almost a tribute to his grandfather in a sense.
This is a slap in the face to all those b.s. wannabe country songs that try to demonstrate how wisdom is passed across generations (Kenny Chesney, The Good Stuff, pay attention -- this is real country music)
i love how he adds the story to the song , it fits perfect...He could have easily recorded this song like this..such as johnny paycheck and David Allan done on several songs. Real country music.
Sammy Kershaw my hind end. Jamey Johnson sounds like Jamey Frickin Johnson. Jennings is someone he models his music after. But definitely no Sammy Kershaw.
This song is awesome and so real and if you can't feel it,than you're simply just not human.Go out and get his entire album"That Lonsome Song",it's worth all the money!
Couldn't agree with you more MSGTapp. It's great to here some real country music. I also love how ashton shepard sounds for the women country singers. She sounds country.
This is what music is all about, people who can sit with an acoustic guitar and belt out an amazing song like this are true musicians and storytellers. Country music is so commercialized these days it refreshing to see a real person playing and singing. GO JAMEY, YOU KICK ASS!!!!!!! None of these pop country singers can even touch you man, thanks for keeping it real!
Artists like Tim mcgraw, are Great, I sing pop country myself, but i posted a vid of me singing this song. Yes this is a solid country song, but other artists are just doing their thing, if you dont like their music, just pretend like they dont exsist, if you dont like his or rascal flatts, you wont like mine, you may not, but i have great fans who do.
Tim McGraw may all have fans and people who like his kind of music, and that's FINE. To each his own. The problem is that this music is represented to the "masses" as the FACE of country music. When I think of country music, I think of Waylon, Hank, Willie, Cash, Coe, Paycheck, and guys like Jamey. Not saying your music isn't valid. It's just saying most true old school country music fans don't like it, and don't want to call it COUNTRY. Label it as POP COUNTRY and we're cool.
if a song is devoid of purpose, no matter how good it sounds, to me it's useless, i love this song because it sounds great and is full of purpose, thanks for something truly original.
This is coming from a guy who prefers alternative rock...This song talks to me a lot more than any other song I've heard. It reminds me so much of my grandparents whom are now up visiting the man in the sky, both who grew up in the depression and grandpa who fought in hell in WWII.
2 months ago, when I first heard this song on KJDX 93.3 FM, in Chester, CA . . . I got goosebumps. That hasn't changed. The DJ essentially called him "the Kristofferson of the new generation." Thank God for Jamey Johnson, he IS the best thing to happen to country in a long while. "Artists" like Tim McGraw, should take note . . .
powerful, don't sell the next honkytonk bidonkydonk, bought your album, moving, but you need the kick of a radio song to move, it, then your rich and can make more songs like this, thank you brother, all the joy, all the pain, country baby, country
Jamey is the man!!! This song is awesome, it reminds me of my grandpas and the way they like to tell about the past as I grew up around em'. I really believe Jamey is the real deal and not just made in Nashville.
Taylor Swift as comercialized country. Writing every song on your first album (if im not mistaken) is a great achievement. Now i do agree with you about Jessica Simpson. Im sure she's never written a song in her life.
Perfect doesn't happen very often. Sit'in on the porch with a cold glass of tea, watch'in the sun set while my kids grow up play'in in the yard and remembering my own childhood while I listen to Jamey sing this wonderful song...well...that's as perfect as it gets in this simple man's life
Its nice to hear someone who can actually sound GOOD when they perform live! All of todays music, except country, is garbage. And this song helps prove it!
Jamey hit the nail on the head with this song. You could put Jamey and Eric in a room and i would listen for days! I wish his pre-album show in nashville a couple of weeks ago would have went on longer.
