Yes, bolio1981, you are very right. Long fist movements are excellent for use against multiple attackers. THAT is the origin of these movements, they were used by travelers on the road, when faced with an ambush of robbers. This was the environment that the monks lived in.
practicing this style helps you get across the room fast and take out multiple opponents to say these monks don't know application of form seems silly comment take what you can from the form if you are advanced enough believe me if you are surrounded in an alley with multiple villans, using some of these moves would be beneficial, you can't use brazilian jiu jitsu, against multiple opponents, you need to cover area fast and get out...

to make my last comment clear it was stated in the book american shaolin and has been admitted by others that while a lot of them know how to fight, many of them dont necessarily know the combat applications of the traditional forms. No disrespect intended, I admire their heart, just have heard some troubling things about the temple since i started my own training .
MOST people, especially these "acrobatic monks" don't know why the moves are done that way they are, they don't know what the purpose of the forms are, what the postures really do, what the strategy of the style is, what the core body mechanics really are, what whole body movement is, what the correct footwork is, and so on.
Most people are just doing what basically amounts to break dancing.
have to wonder how much application he knows though. thats the problem with many of the warrior monks. many dont know how to use the more traditional forms in combat.
True - but then again no body fights with a "form". Who knows? There could be several combos in there that the guys has practiced 100,000 times with applications, etc. and could easily use it.
very true, my own sifu has said many times, form is a precursor to combat, and a way to get you used to moving a certain way, but applications are a matter of looking beyond the form and figuring out what the movements can do out of sequence. Always says forms are meant to look good, kung fu in combat is not.
