O'Neill's play "Hughie" made its Broadway debut in 1954 with Jason Robards Jr starring. I looked that up because this WML episode does not have an air date....
If it had aired in 1954 instead of 1964 I would have wondered if that was Jason Robards Sr. They were remarkably alike in voice and face.
I saw a 30s movie once on TV once and couldn't figure out how Robards Jr made that movie when he was 15 yrs old! haha it was the father.
Think of the likes of Jason Robards, Peter Ustinov, Lee Remick, Van Heflin and others you used to see on FREE TV, then turn on the $100-a-month cable bilge you're suffering through now (yes, with some exceptions.) Makes it kinda hard to watch, doesn't it?
Please see "A Thousand Clowns". Robards is superb and you'll never ever wonder why everyone was in awe and complimenting him so vociferously on this show.
He was a spectacular actor--one of America's greatest.
at 1:31 it appears Dorothy is going for Kirk Douglas , or Bert Lancaster from the low voice --- If you ssy Broadway today- the issue is strictly stage production musical , or drama , or comedy... in the 50's to say "On Broadway" also meant a debut of a major Motion picture premier... or straight run of a film- very interesting to witness this history of a half century - also many Film "stars" could & did act on the legitamate stage - NOT SO nowdays...
During the couse of the evening the drinks Louis was pouring me werestrong.About 200am while
listening to Sara vaughn jason asked me,Ric,where do you live i said about 35 miles south in palo Alto. well,he said to me,your not driving home tonight and louis showed me an extra bedroom upstairs. Well,he and I drank until about 330am,he and I never said a word about
acting.H had just wrapped cable Hogue. 13 yrs later i worked with him in kansascity, and he walked right over to me.A real class act!!
I was surprised to see this show with jason Robards.I was very lucky in 1971,while Jason was on location in san francisco with katherine Ross in a film directed by Tom Gries.I was just 21
and 6mo old.I kept hanging around the set watching his every move. So he was kind enough to invite me up to the house that was rented for him and his new wife.well, after a few
scotches he had me stay the night. I will never
forget that evening. I learned alot from a real pro.
Mr. Robards' lower-third was set in Grotesque No. 9 - a typeface used in those days by certain CBS O&O's (namely WCBS-TV in New York and KNXT, now KCBS-TV, in Los Angeles) for their logos, with the "2" either next to the CBS eye or the lower hook over it.
Comparison contrast always helped make WML a great game show. Distinguished actor Jason Robards using that voice that sounds like a door in need of oil. Funny! Buddy Hackett's comedy persona obscured his other talents: he was, in fact, one of the smartest guys in showbiznia. In his WML appearances, he could deliver (clean) funny stuff brilliantly, but he solved games as well. In one episode (c 1962) when everyone wandered about hopelessly lost, he determined that the women grew mushrooms.
$4,00 for the Top Ticket price to see a broadway play!

I have to say, his was not a very well disguised voice. If Cerf were there, he would have nailed it, too.

Jason was great as Capone in the St. Valentines Day Massacre- had you believing he was the real crook.
He also had one of the great lines in motion pictures, where he answers a phone by saying: "Is it money or good news?" in A Thousand Clowns.
