Why does everyone say Chevy's 5.0 cant do anything but Ford's 5.0 is king shit? Ignorance is the answer. Theres nothing wrong with building a 305. People think they are junk because of stock ratings of 170hp or so, but they never think to compare that to the same year stock ratings of a 350, which is about 180-190. Everything was a turd in the 80s, thank god its not the 80s anymore. A 305 vs 350 built with all the same parts, youd never feel the difference on the street, theyre almost identical
There's a guy at the local drag strip with an early S10 turning low 11s all night long with a 305. I went over and talked to him. He's running a Herbert solid lifter cam, fully ported 461 heads with big valves and a glide with a 4000 stall converter and 4.88 gears. It has a 750 Holley dbl pumper on it with a Victor Jr. intake. Man does that thing scream!
actually..the right combo of parts in a 305 will net 400 brake hp easy. Cheapest route is with Vortecs. 305 heads arent made for hp but low end torque and fuel efficiency. A zero deck is a must & proper quench. A piston with a 1.560" compression height and the block planed .025" will nail it. A head-gasket compressed thickness of .035" - .040" will net proper quench. 270-285 duration cam. Clean up the Vortec runners up a bit, some roller valvetrain, tight balance & spin that bitch 6500 :]
Vortec 059 305 castings, cleaned/milled, toss a set of ARP studs on the mains, align bore, use a ZZ4 crank, balance them to a good set of aftermarket rods, flattop pistons .025" in the hole, I run a .016" rubber embossed steel shim, then toss in a GM 847 hydraulic roller camshaft, Edelbrock Victor Jr 4bbl intake and 780 Holley Vacuum secondary carb with 1 3/4" primary headers. Run a full roller 1.6:1 rocker, a rev-kit and some good springs, spin it 6,500 @ 450+ hp
i worked at a engine there was a stake dinner bet between the boss and his bother my boss said he could get more then 500hp out of a 305 we did just that we we went over kill on the 305 with a stock stroke and .010 over we ended up with the dyno of N/A 1003hp at 7 grand 980lb of tork mind you this was a boat load of cash we dumped in to for a t- bone
@crookcountyIll Can I get one that's facing Earth with a Moon Roof of the Moon!!! blahaha Someone needs to get new dyno's !!! Hell I'd have a 9,000,000HP chevette with some of the dyno's that ppl on here are saying
i too have built myself a 305,but i have done alot more to my motor and no where near 400hp. i took a 82 lg4 305,put flat top pistonsin, ported 416 heads, crane 274h06 cam, offenhauser single quad tunnel ram,3000 stall ,t350 trans with stage3 shift kit,msd ignition, and maybe just maybe getting 300/320 hp.not saying you cant get 400hp,but it takes a lot of machining to get there...just sayin.....
have you ever checked out the aussie made Holden 304ci V8s? Used in v8 supercars GM also but much easier to mod than these chev 305s, my holden SS commodore revs 8grand all day, sideways all the way to 3rd,,,,check my vids if you wanna hear her start up
spend the same amount of money you spend on that 305 on a 350 and you'd be making a lot more power. 305's are handicapped as a perfromance engine due to the "valve shrounding" of the 3.75" bore. and 305's dont rev any higher or faster than a 350. you need a short stroke to pull revs. 283,327, DZ302.. now those are some SBC's that can rev to 7000+ in stock form and not "ventilate" the crankcase..
i think if you only have a 305, you can do some good bolt on packages to bring hp around 340-370hp and then when you get yourself a 350 motor then you can bolt those parts on that and make even more.. but hey not everyone wants 400-500hp in a street car and 300-350hp might be perfect for them. so why buy a bigger motor when you don't need to. horses for courses. figure out what you need. don't chase numbers.
The best stock sbc 23 deg head still is the 40 yr old humps and they produce enough flow for 400HP and then some. The 305/350 has a 3:48 stroke while the 383sbc has a 3:75 stroke ,different animals 454 ? ones a mouse sbc the other BB's a rat .If you want to make HP with a 305 get some humps, balance the rotating assembly , and set up a roller valve train to turn some rev's on 94's and it will cost you about $5 a horse , but when you pass the 300 mark the price goes up considerably.
@MegaGuitarboss The big valves wont fit into a 305 block 1:94 is as large as you an go.There's no side flow if you enlarge the 416's there is with the 186 because the chamber is larger and overlaps the block. The 305 V are swirl heads not the same as 350 V. The 186's flow 384 hp with 1:94 and your not doing that with 305 swirl heads. The runners on the 186 are close to 416 but they have a closed chamber which help create HP The flow charts on the 350 V tech r with much larger valves & wont fit.
how much money do you think that you spent doing this? I have a 305, and i would really like to stay with it, everyone else wants me to switch to a 350, but i would like to stay with the 305
@mysticalfirelord if its a cruiser then its perfect, but for racing or performance i would go with a bigger engine rather then putting money into a 305, but thats just me
@mysticalfirelord do it. they are the same stroke just different cubic inch. I have had a stock 350 and 305 in front of a 4 speed in a truck and could tell no difference in power
@mysticalfirelord I'm puttin my 305 together and spending around 2000 dollars but all parts are new and it should make about 370hp around 6000 rpm when i'm done and im buildin it for the street and cuz alot of people tell me the same thing get the 350 but i'm like no becuz this is a good strong motor and i want to stick with it...now worse come to worse it goes out on me then i'll get a 350
Everyone craps on about how useless the 305 is because of its smaller bore. Oddly enough, professional engine designers disagree. Bore/stroke ratios for engines (including 2 valvers) have been steadily decreasing-yet engines have higher specific outputs and better efficiency than they ever did in the 60s. It's not all about CFM figures.
maybe u can help me i just built my 305 with a thumpr cam intake springs ect with a 600 holley dp at bout 1300 to 1700 rpm it sputters if i hold it steady for a few seconds at 1500 the mash the gas more it bogs then revs up fine even down the road at 1600 rpm its jumpy and hesitating can u tell me wats goin on? thanks that 305 u got is a beast
duel plane intake?,the motor is all carb ,and cam, have to agree with madtownmadman ,i can,t even get 400 hp from my 350 without 202 heads on it ,which i don,t want anyway,
Personaly, only way i would even try with a 305 5.0L is if i had all the parts just laying around and the machineing equipment (CnC lathe / mill). Otherwise i would just go with a better small block, 305's are not upgrade friendly without alot custom machineing work (this is why it was labled as one of the worst chevy engines). More cost effective just to build a 325 or 350, without dealing with milling out custom heads and boreing out the cylinders.
@Ph0enyx1978 what would be the difference, do the same cam, same head work carb and intake, maybe a cuple horse difference, besides everybody has a 350 and not many people do up a 305 like this one, and if your going to comment somthin shitty back just dont do it at all
@CustomDeluxe1984 The biggest difference is the smaller bore that won't allow big valves. And the difference between a 350 and a 305 with the same set up is a lot more than a couple HP.
And there's a reason not many people do up a 305, because they aren't worth it. Sure if you have the parts laying around and need an engine for something other than racing (like the poster of the video), then fine. But for anyone to spend serious cash trying to build a high HP 305 would be a waste of time.
As far as street use is concerned, far too much noise is made about big valves and big bores. In the 60s when airflow was poorly understood 'going large' on everything seemed to be the only way to make power. But the LS1 has a narrower bore than the old sbc 350 yet has no trouble making more power. In fact virtually all modern engines are undersquare and for make far more power than their 60s counterparts. Building a 350 is hard, not because it has a narrower bore, but
because of the lack of performance orientated parts specfic to the 305. The bore stroke ratio of the 305 is basically the same as the sbc 383 and the bbc 454 and few people complain about those engines being boat anchors. The 305 is short of cubic inches, but with thought, it is possible to get a LOT out of those inches.
True, but the laws of fluid dynamics haven't changed, in spite of what aftermarket companies try to tell you. Besides the 305 does not use 50 year old heads. Magazines will try to tell you that obtaining 450 'streeetable' horsepower from a 350 is easy-it isn't. They cheat to get big numbers. If you set ~400hp as a reliable limit for a 350 sbc, then the 305 doesn't seem such a bad bet after all. Heat managment is the barrier to reliable horsepower from the SBC, not air flow.
@MrTimothyalex Well, I'm assuming you didn't build this mill. So, my question still stands, only more directed at you now. What makes you think this motor makes anywhere near 400 horse? Thats quite a task for a 305, considering all the limitations 305s had from the factory. As pessimistic as I sound, it can be done. The main things to address would be cyl head flow, comp. and pistons set at zero deck. Stock motors suffer frm shitty quench area from pistons set below the deck height of the block.
@madtownmadman What the hell are you talking about. I know the limitations of a 305. You asked how do you know its 400hp. I simply said a dyno. A dyno tells you how much hp a motor has. Asshole.
@MrTimothyalex What do you mean by, "what the hell am I talking about." Look at my comment. Its plain as day what I'm saying. You said yourself you know the limitations of the 305. And yes, you said a dyno. Every "gearhead" knows what a dyno does. But where in the video is there mention of one, or a picture of a dyno sheet? Or anything at all in the video description, about a dyno for that matter. My whole point was the video titles claim, and how theres no documentation of its output.
@madtownmadman Hey bud, google this: "150 HP for a 305 Chevy Engine - Hate Me Add 150 HP to the Chevy No One Likes
From the January, 2007 issue of Popular Hot Rodding"
By Steve Dulcich
They took a boring, dished piston 305, added cheap EQ heads w/180cc intake runners, an relatively mild XE268 cam, performer RPM manifold and demon 650 carb and got 370hp at 6100RPM and 350 ft. lbs. torque at 4500! Now, what was that you were whining about? A little more cam and they could have reached 400 hp.
305 is a darn good motor. I have had many and still have one. Had a 66 Chevy and dropped in a 305 with a Holley 4 bbl, dual points, offenhauser intake and a small Lunati cam, headers and glasspacks. Smoked a 68 GTX 440 and a Duster 340 with it. Don't talk about a 305. They are underrated.
How do u get 400hp from a 305?? I got a 305 bored, 9.5 compression, and an rv cam.....but i dont make that and mine runs perfect!! Is the only difference ur Holley and the heads you used? Or is there a roller cam, springs, intake or something??
@retained4321 i got the stock dual-plane and the stock rockers as well.....but i want to get more pep outta mine, but im guessing u put more than $1400 in ur 305. Got any advice?
@daffyduck56 sorry getting back to u so late but theres a list of things that i could let u in on that whould give u increased hp and touque numbers, but i know have a lil over 2600$ in 305 now (335) and im now running close to 450 hp if not a lil better. but 1st off u should give that motor all the air you can get in it, i would go start with a 700 cfm carb if u want a lil larger and new headers if urs arent. Message me and i'll give u a list of things that will help.
305s really ain't that bad.they just came with terrible stock parts.they have a small bore but so does a new 5.3.they're actually about the same bore but the 5.3 doesn't have shitty heads, cam, intake, and low compression
@Artyfil i paid someone to paint it and they never did... but im pulling the motor for a pretty nasty 454 i threw together from previous builds scraps.. should be around 700hp.. i will throw some dyno vids when i get back from cabo
400hp is no great feat for a 305.....nice engine you have..check out my 305/311 its only about 300 hp .
There are several dyno proven articles on the net about getting 400hp from a 305 ...its not rocket science and very easy for someone who knows engines and can be done very cheaply........once again nice build man ...thumbs up on a good use of spare parts.
@Artyfil i have a 305 with 400 horses, i will find a dyno to show proof though. but im soon putting the 335 stroker kit that i have in my garage on it and i think ill gain an extra 30 to 40 horses give or take a few horses. When it comes down to it if u know ur shit the 305 is capable of more then alot of people think. But I wasn't the only person to do work on my motor though.
well 305s are easyer to find now days hard to find a 350 4 bolt unless u pay good for it but there still out there 305 isnt a good motor to build but a good engine nontheless u can make power out of a 262 v8 if you wanna dump money into it lol
sounds pretty good for a 305. my guess is the torque converter isn't bolted up. hence the super snappy thottle response. sorta like taking the blade off a lawn mower
@slickss85 or could be a stall, never know. 305s are know for reving fast if built. Got a buddy with a 4.8 and a 4l60e and a 3800 stall, revs fast as hell
I had and 83 olds cutlass i put a 305 bone stock chevy motor with the big valve 305 heads a torker intake and 750 holley and a crane fireball 302 duration cam 490 lift that motor ran like a striped assed ape until i eventually broke every skirt on every piston at 8500 rpms dont let anybody tell you a 305 wont run they run very well
@rahs9899 no shit this is exactly what happened to my 305 lol had big valve heads 650 edelbrock with rpm performer high rise a 515 lift cam 2200 stall an omg one day i finally bought a tachometer had it working for an hour before i got curious to see how high it rapped got to 8500 boom except only one piston went the wrist pin blew up piston slammed into head lol it was a bad deal and i had aluminum pistons so mine really liked higher rpm's.
awesome!!! I have a bored 283 with 305 heads 1.84 in. 58cc, edelbrock performer intake, MSD, headers and a holley 670cfm carb. attached to my TH350 trans, my axle ratios is 4:56 and this combo is in my jeep CJ. smokes my 38s swampers
I got an 88 camaro with 305 throttle body engine, i took off the stock air cleaner and put on an edelbrock open element, but my gas mileage went down to like 7mpg city! so i had to switch it back. I really wanna put a 3.73 rear in instead of the 2.73 in it now, maybe drop a 383 stroker in one day, its only got 63k original miles on the original 305 and auto trans.
Hi, saw your post. Lunati built a 345 hp 305 with just basic components using 305 heads.. You can google "Lunati's 343 hp 305 Build-up" and find it. It is a real screamer!
The Lunati build used used Aluminum Pro Comp on one of their dyno runs and WP heads on the other run to get there. 1.94 are the bigest valves you can stuff in the cyl. Its not hard to get 300 on the 416 heads after that is when it gets tight. .. It sounds that way because he's dumping fuel and not burnning it all, to rich.
No. As quote from the article: "Lunati used "generic" 305 iron cylinder heads (casting number=14014416, used on LG4 and HO engines), replacing the 1.84-inch stock valves with larger 1.94-inch valves, but kept the stock 1.50-inch exhaust valve size, treating both to a "good' standard valve job. They also ended up gasket-matching the heads and doing a little bowl work before installing Lunati high-performance springs, retainers, locks, screw-in studs, and pushrod guideplates."
Your right I looked it up again and found a different article than I had read The one I found first was a thread. The 1.94 though have a drawback concerning shrouding the article talked about the wp heads moving the intake valve in toward the center ,The pro Comp part talked about the ability to send the heads off to the sawmill because of their thick base and get the compression back. I just did a 501 lift Lunati 416 head 305 build, but kept the 84's.-300 hp? next I'll try the 186's with 94's
I run 601 heads from a 262 cu. in. motor. They are cast at about 53cc, but i unshrouded the valves and now have about 59cc . I spend about 11 hours porting them. i use 1.94 and 1.60 exhaust. all valves are back cut 30 degrees. i run a comp cams 280 h-10, 650 double pumper and holley contender manifold with 1 inch spacer. 15/8 long tube headers. i have a turbo 350 with shift kit and 3000 stall converter. My gears are 4.10 to 1. i run this in a 67 nova. car pulls hard! Shift at 6300.
damn people leave the man the fuck alone rewicdedjester08 ur wrong my 305 in my s10 has 9.5.1 comp and it has 210hp stock its a ''le9'' 305 from a van look it up...p.s good job on the motor i'm going solid lift .525 comp cam with alum lt1 converted to work on a gen1 sbc hoping for big numbers
I had a nasty 305 in a 78 Scottsdale swb no bed. It had a comp 270, Performer, and a 750 Qjet with open headers. The truck was super quick but it didn't last long. The engine reved quick and I extended it to the limit; actually well past the limit 400 hp sounds like a lot. Remember... the Z28 302 had 11:1 comp and a huge mechenical cam...and it was far from 400 hp. I can't knock the 305. I have a 350 2 bolt that I am fixing to build...any tips?
Woooow 400HP 305 chevy! nice, dont see to many of those. what year block is it?
do you have any tips for my 87 z28 camaro, it has a 305 chevy. all i got right now is headers and a edlebrock performer intake manifold. any tips to bump up my hp?
Most people make that mistake and try to cam it like its a 350. The 305 has too small valves. Try to get a valve centerline like 108 degrees or 110 degrees. There are a couple of good build articles on the web aboult this engine. Oh, The stock heads are crappy, Ideally they should be replaced with World products S/R with 58 cc combussion chamber.
LOL... Its actually not too hard when you have a decent flowing head and a cam that matches it. what do you have to prove anything? I design radical race engines and experiment with stupid shit other people don't.
no its just that i had a rs camaro with a 305 cam and headers and my stock cavaleir would rape it. i was disappointed in chevy for the 305. i know its possible to make anything fast. but 400hp on 9.5:1 comp ratio 305 just doesn't add up to me. if you got it...props to you man! deff got me scratchin my head!
Accel/DFI fuel injection. (super-ram) .470/.480 lift 212/220 duration mechanical cam. Schneider Racing cams. 2.02/1.60 190cc intake-port cylinder heads. Vortech V1 or V2 supercharger set at a whopping 23psi. And 9:1 compression. HEI distributor. Transmission: TCI Auto 6x transsmission w/ a 2.77 first gear. And a 3.60 rear end. Built it last year for my brothers '84 Dodge D50 pick up. Got the idea from a hot rod magazine of some form.
nice job man, some people don't understand how to make horsepower. I see you got it figured out. i built a 283 last year that cranked out 380hp on the dyno so its very possible to get good hp out of a small small block. maybe these other idiots will figure that out.
I built a dart headed .030 over 305 for a customer in North Carolina. He ran 7.20s at 96mph in a 3300lb cutlass. that engine put up 500hp with a mild roller cam. If you know what you are doing you can make a lot of power. This camshaft has a very radical ramp, similar to a roller. the lifters are old casidium coated flat tappets i had from a rebuild of a circle track engine. The intakes flowed 218cfm@.500 and 224@.600 exh was 172cfm@.500 cranking compression was 195psi. Very peaky engine!
hey jrkoff your a hell of a tuner, did you do that? where did you school at? can you jet my carb? how come you can still hear idleing when its being blipped?
Nice job man, just made a nasty 383 solid roller, after that is a 305 because they are awsome, but sucked stuck, so no one respects them. ur cam a roller or flat tapped? hydrolic or solid? im guessing hydraulic flat taped by the specs, i could be wrong tho ;)
Why does everyone say Chevy's 5.0 cant do anything but Ford's 5.0 is king shit? Ignorance is the answer. Theres nothing wrong with building a 305. Even tho it's a 305 cubic inches small block Chevy... and it may sound like a bigger motor but it's still a small block... its just idles different
CharlesDeCapua 1 year ago
i think if you only have a 305, you can do some good bolt on packages to bring hp around 340-370hp and then when you get yourself a 350 motor then you can bolt those parts on that and make even more.. but hey not everyone wants 400-500hp in a street car and 300-350hp might be perfect for them. so why buy a bigger motor when you don't need to. horses for courses. figure out what you need. don't chase numbers.
laurence265 1 year ago 5
The best stock sbc 23 deg head still is the 40 yr old humps and they produce enough flow for 400HP and then some. The 305/350 has a 3:48 stroke while the 383sbc has a 3:75 stroke ,different animals 454 ? ones a mouse sbc the other BB's a rat .If you want to make HP with a 305 get some humps, balance the rotating assembly , and set up a roller valve train to turn some rev's on 94's and it will cost you about $5 a horse , but when you pass the 300 mark the price goes up considerably.
215jami 1 year ago
@215jami the vortec heads make tha old humps look like crap vortecs flow better and produce better hp than the humps ever thought about
MegaGuitarboss 1 year ago
@MegaGuitarboss The big valves wont fit into a 305 block 1:94 is as large as you an go.There's no side flow if you enlarge the 416's there is with the 186 because the chamber is larger and overlaps the block. The 305 V are swirl heads not the same as 350 V. The 186's flow 384 hp with 1:94 and your not doing that with 305 swirl heads. The runners on the 186 are close to 416 but they have a closed chamber which help create HP The flow charts on the 350 V tech r with much larger valves & wont fit.

matthewgleason75 4 months ago
@mysticalfirelord
It's not all about CFM figures.

ragytagful 1 year ago
Personaly, only way i would even try with a 305 5.0L is if i had all the parts just laying around and the machineing equipment (CnC lathe / mill). Otherwise i would just go with a better small block, 305's are not upgrade friendly without alot custom machineing work (this is why it was labled as one of the worst chevy engines). More cost effective just to build a 325 or 350, without dealing with milling out custom heads and boreing out the cylinders.

It's funny how so many people claim to make big power from a 305, but never a dyno sheet to prove it.
Ph0enyx1978 1 year ago
@Ph0enyx1978 what would be the difference, do the same cam, same head work carb and intake, maybe a cuple horse difference, besides everybody has a 350 and not many people do up a 305 like this one, and if your going to comment somthin shitty back just dont do it at all
CustomDeluxe1984 1 year ago
@CustomDeluxe1984 The biggest difference is the smaller bore that won't allow big valves. And the difference between a 350 and a 305 with the same set up is a lot more than a couple HP.
And there's a reason not many people do up a 305, because they aren't worth it. Sure if you have the parts laying around and need an engine for something other than racing (like the poster of the video), then fine. But for anyone to spend serious cash trying to build a high HP 305 would be a waste of time.
Ph0enyx1978 1 year ago
@Ph0enyx1978
Building a 350 is hard, not because it has a narrower bore, but
nem427 1 year ago
@nem427
because of the lack of performance orientated parts specfic to the 305. The bore stroke ratio of the 305 is basically the same as the sbc 383 and the bbc 454 and few people complain about those engines being boat anchors. The 305 is short of cubic inches, but with thought, it is possible to get a LOT out of those inches.
nem427 1 year ago
@nem427 Because modern engines have better heads. You're comparing modern heads to 50+ year old technology.
Ph0enyx1978 1 year ago
@Ph0enyx1978
Heat managment is the barrier to reliable horsepower from the SBC, not air flow.
nem427 1 year ago

MrTimothyalex 1 year ago
@MrTimothyalex Well, I'm assuming you didn't build this mill. So, my question still stands, only more directed at you now. What makes you think this motor makes anywhere near 400 horse? Thats quite a task for a 305, considering all the limitations 305s had from the factory. As pessimistic as I sound, it can be done. The main things to address would be cyl head flow, comp. and pistons set at zero deck. Stock motors suffer frm shitty quench area from pistons set below the deck height of the block.
madtownmadman 1 year ago
@madtownmadman What the hell are you talking about. I know the limitations of a 305. You asked how do you know its 400hp. I simply said a dyno. A dyno tells you how much hp a motor has. Asshole.
MrTimothyalex 1 year ago
@MrTimothyalex What do you mean by, "what the hell am I talking about." Look at my comment. Its plain as day what I'm saying. You said yourself you know the limitations of the 305. And yes, you said a dyno. Every "gearhead" knows what a dyno does. But where in the video is there mention of one, or a picture of a dyno sheet? Or anything at all in the video description, about a dyno for that matter. My whole point was the video titles claim, and how theres no documentation of its output.

Hi, saw your post. Lunati built a 345 hp 305 with just basic components using 305 heads.. You can google "Lunati's 343 hp 305 Build-up" and find it. It is a real screamer!
kenzo5716 2 years ago
thats awsome!
wickedblackcamaro 2 years ago
The Lunati build used used Aluminum Pro Comp on one of their dyno runs and WP heads on the other run to get there. 1.94 are the bigest valves you can stuff in the cyl. Its not hard to get 300 on the 416 heads after that is when it gets tight. .. It sounds that way because he's dumping fuel and not burnning it all, to rich.
215jami 2 years ago
They also ended up gasket-matching the heads and doing a little bowl work before installing Lunati high-performance springs, retainers, locks, screw-in studs, and pushrod guideplates."
kenzo5716 2 years ago
Your right I looked it up again and found a different article than I had read The one I found first was a thread. The 1.94 though have a drawback concerning shrouding the article talked about the wp heads moving the intake valve in toward the center ,The pro Comp part talked about the ability to send the heads off to the sawmill because of their thick base and get the compression back. I just did a 501 lift Lunati 416 head 305 build, but kept the 84's.-300 hp? next I'll try the 186's with 94's
215jami 2 years ago

REwickedjester08 2 years ago
You can build it up!
A big aggressive cam, heads that can move some air, 9.5:1 pistons. Not hard at all to build that power out of a 305.
My '83 camaro has a 305, it's no slouch.
Putting one in my '50, because of it's bore size to cubic inches, it can be tached higher, and you can get 550 horses and get 23 miles to the gallon.
