  • I'd rather call this one remix - still dope tune after whatever you call it.

Big up to Madlib and Donald Byrd.

  • Hi my name is Stephanie Spruill. I'm the vocalist on "Stepping into Tomorrow". I recorded this song with Donald Byrd in the 70's. I had a great time singing my heart out!!!

  • @spruillhouse

    thx for your beautiful voice!!!!

  • @spruillhouse Youre amazing.

  • @spruillhouse Sweet

  • @spruillhouse thank you for a truly awesome performance, wonderful energy. I was just thinking today how hard it must have been to live with that intensity for a whole session but what an incredible time to be...

  • @spruillhouse really? thats awesome!

  • @spruillhouse Wow, respect Ms. Spruill! Thank you so much for adding such an important and flawless part to a song that will always be relevant to generations after it.

  • @spruillhouse This song wouldn't be what it is without you. You're immortalized in my mind and heart. Thank you.

  • @spruillhouse For real?! Lady you have pipes! This song got through my walk to school every morning. Thank you.

  • @spruillhouse can you send me money for crack?

  • @spruillhouse You did a great job, and thanks for the inspirational work!

I hope I'm making you very proud knowing that, as a male with a low-low voice, I try to sing with you every time this blasts in my car. I try my best to hit those high notes with stark clarity, although I am probably making my passenger's ears bleed.

    Have a nice day! =D

  • @spruillhouse I love this mix especially because your great voice has been brought right to the forefront!!

  • @spruillhouse wow are you're still living? - Share with use your secret to immortality....

  • madlib should remix some toots thielemans tunes

  • madlib=genius

  • we dont need no heroes anymore..we got madlib

  • does anybody know the sample used at the start of the track?

  • Hollyweerd used this for their mixtape (it was good, ya'll should check it out).

  • this joint is maddddd addictive - like 'players' from slum village..........damn

  • Anyone know what the sample in the intro is? Where MF Doom is talking?

i think i heard it was another Bobbi Humphrey sample...but wanna know for sure

  • @rtoriq lol actually just found out now: the beginning sample was Bobbi Humphrey's "Blacks and Blues" (the track name)

  • when i grow up i want to be like madlib

  • I freestyled to all 6 minutes of this damn beat...Madlib is a genius

  • Mayne, I'm tellin' ya, the whole time I was at school I couldn't get this song out of my head. Madlib is a heavily addicting drug I tell you, a great one! Spread da word!

  • i bugged out when i first heard this, i didnt know how to act...this is my shit

  • He got paid to remake a whole bunch of classic blue note tunes ! RESPECT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • simply amazing.

  • I like the fact that this remix is not too far from the original. Very nicely done.

  • This is a good song to just chill and forget bout problems

  • Madlib is truly the Beat Konducta!!!!!!!!!!

  • DOOM is so funny.

  • As sick as Madlib is...I never realized how lackin this track seems witout the trumpet work of Donald Byrd.

  • That's that heat... thanks

  • Madlib Changed my perception of what music should sound like. Dude is a genius...

  • Well give credit to Donald Byrd if this track is the reason, cos this is a cover. Not to take credit away from Madlib. The nigga is sick. He plays all his own instruments (except at live shows obviously).

  • Actually this is not a cover but a remix:He just pitched up,remixed the tracks of this session from the original tapes and obviously edited a bit because his version lasts 7 min vs 5 for the original (& Madlib's is pitched up so it should be shorter).Sound-wise,Madlib's choices are awesome:UPFRONT rythm section(drums, bass, percs),the voice'sdry & way louder than on the '75 version since he has lowered the keyboards & made disapear the horns...For any Harvey Mason(or drums)fan,it's like Xmas :D

  • I'm almost certain that this is cover because of the fact that Madlib plays nearly every instrument imaginable. It wouldn't be beyond his skills to cover this song. Also, the vocalist on this version holds out quite a few notes that were not held out as long on the original. There are also slight changes in the bass line. It is plausible that Madlib could have sampled. Sadly I don't own the album anymore, so I can't confirm with the liner notes.

  • This is definately a remix but a true one(no sample but making a new mix of the tracks from the original tapes)Iknow Madlib's skills enough to know he can't sound like that(Listen&compare the versions:this is Harvey but pitched up a whole tone&boosted sound-wise,same for the bass track,2 times louder than the original)This voice is definately on the original but in this version, the girl sings alone(without the Mizell's voices)that's what make it sound different.Dope track anyway ;) Peace.

  • then why is it on HIS album of shades of blue then?

  • Comment removed

  • Not so much, you know...to my ears,it's obvious coz I must have listened to the Byrd version hundreds of times and as a music lover(& musician),I'm just a huge fan of Harvey Mason but don't take me wrong,I also dig Madlib a lot since Lootpack('99) especially Madvillain & the 2 Quas...Peace.

  • After picking up Byrd's track for comparison, I could tell that this is a pitched up sample with the of muting or removal of the trumpet (more likely removal, since at this point I would assume that Madlib had access to the master track).

  • he ripped this off more or less

  • He didn't rip it off. He was paid by Blue Note Jazz label to remake their old stuff. It's pretty damn cool, huh.

  • yeah, but he pimped the original (which is a beautiful in itself) in the best way! ..this is like fiya!

  • Lootpack!!!

  • wow u know ur stuff

  • BEAT MYSTIFIES ME

  • loving this groov!!

  • I was thinking "huh, but this sounds likes Black & Blues by Bobbi Humphrey?" ... and then Stepping into Tomorrow comes in.

Madlib obviously has a thing for the Mizell Brothers (who produced both of the original tunes).

  • nah bro its stepping into tomorrow donald byrd.. or maybe you already know that haha..

  • I was thinking the same thing. At the same time I realized that Blacks & Blues was sampled in "Plumskinzz" by KMD, which features: yes.....DOOM! It's definitely no coincidence that DOOM appears in the intro of this fine Madlib remix!

  • wow thats pretty sick!!!

  • haha i like the way the pictures come in

  • does anyone know where I can find 2mc or not 2mc? I stumbled upon it lookin for some quasimoto but I cant find it anymore

  • wonder what his production process is like: filtered samples + recorded live drums?

madlib is a music hero to me..some of his production just mystifies me. guess that's why he's one of the best

  • Madlib is forever

  • I was absolutely mystified by this beat until I heard the original song by Donald Byrd. It's a phat beat, but mostly stolen.

  • nevermind, he did a lot to it hah. both tracks are plainly dope.

  • new vibe but it definitely keeps the classic vibe in too..Great album!

  • this song has been stuck in my head for three days now? and i wouldn't have it any other way

  • I felt that before. its motivating isnt it

  • @colliay3 haha damn im all kikin it with my homie and hes been saying the beginning part what doom says so i was like damn i gotta bump it hahah

  • this was one of my fav tracks off the album
