  • Gratias tibi.

  • latin sucks

  • @RubeCubeGamer totally argree latin chicks give the best head

  • thumbs up for the Madona refrence

  • I find this so much more helpful than actual school, because I am always embarrased of asking simple questions that were already taught to be MONTHS beforehand... But now if I need something repeated I can just rewind the video! Thank you!!! : )

  • You have the best videos for Latin on the net. Thanks

  • The LL is a y sound. The Anglophones always get it wrong! Even Spanish & French words are mispronounced.

  • You got it all wrong with carthage. Carthage is in north tunisia, not libya dude :/

anyway your lessons are great, thank you so much! =)

  • i like ur lessons man

  • Why do you pronounce nauta as "naurta"?

  • this is really good to learn some latin. but you all have to know, that this is latin spoken with an english dialect...

  • These are WONDERFUL. We have been looking for a secular Latin program for years and this fits the bill perfectly!

  • aWESOME!!

  • Very good and very iteresting.

  • What a great site.

During a speech in federal parliament after last year's election, the "whistleblower" Wilkie addressed the throng and paid homage to our sadly deceased soldiers in Afghanistan in the following manner: Vale (pronounced VEIL as in wedding) "the name of the soldier".

I believe Wilkie is highly educated and I cringed to hear this.I am sure that most people born in Australia would be aware of the correct pronunciation in this usage despite never having learned any Latin.

  • Please note that 'C' is pronounced like 'ts' before E, I and Y.

'ecce' is therefore pronounced like this:

E as the E in equinox

the first C as the K in king

the second C as 'ts' (as Z in the German word zucker)

the second E is pronounced the same as the first one

I love your lessons, please keep on your good work.

  • @negromarionegro

You are thinking of Ecclesiastical/Medieval/Neo Latin, in which C and G are palatalized in certain circumstances; in Classical Latin, C and G are always hard.

  • @resurgam44 Thank you for the explanation. I am puzled though how anybody would know the way Latin was spoken so long ago. Or was that just decided by few who thought knew better?

There must be a reason though that, for instance, in ecce there are two 'c' , otherwise it could be as simple as 'ece' ?

  • @negromarionegro

We know how Latin sounded because Roman grammarians were very descriptive, and their alphabet was crafted to be entirely phonetic - what you see is what you get. Also, In 'ecce', both consonants must be pronounced. In practice, it comes off more as a brief stop, working much like the 'tsu' kana (つ/ツ) in Japanese, or the doubling of medial consonants in Germanic languages such as Old English 'siððan' - there actually would be a phonetic distinction between 'ece' and 'ecce'.

  • @resurgam44

    Thank you for your answer.

    Best wishes.

  • @resurgam44 "Regina" this guy pronounces with a different way than Google Trans does.

  • @TheMrNalsur Google trans is terrible

  • @kerrgal Grammar-wise.... yes it is... :/... but with pronunciation, it usually works...

  • @TheMrNalsur I meant the Beta captions on the video.

  • Thank you so much this is just what I was looking for to teach my children and myself

  • I like this series of videos. Thank you for uploading.

I found mistakes. At 4:10, Melissa respondet "minime_, Ro_ma est in I_talia." But the last "a" must be long, i.e., I_talia_, because it is ablative.

A similar miskate occurs at 5:11. estne Di_do_ in Asia? It should be: estne Di_do_ in Asia_?

  • Is it Juno or Iuno ?

  • great latin lessons you do ! you are really motivating me in two ways - watchin you're videos teaches me english AND latin - wonderful ! thanks a lot.

  • i'm not sure but.. doesnt the sound of the "g" before an "e" sounds like a "j"? my native language is portuguese (I'm from portugal! yupi! xD), and portuguese has many things in common with latin, and when we speak a "g" before an "e" we pronounce it as a "j". and if i'm not mistaken, the other romance languages do the same..

  • @Socks312 the only idiot here is you! leet retard...

  • i don't know much about latin yet. so i don't know, if everything you say here is correct. but i do know, that nobody really knows how latin is pronounced correctly, 'cause the romans unfortunately had the habit of burning their audio tapes after listening to them once. but the flow of your lessons is really nice and the madonna picture in the mix was hilarious! keep it up.

  • Lol man.

There are several pronunciations of Latin and they are all correct.Just because someone thinks the video doesn't adhere to his standards of Latin pronunciation shouldn't shake your faith.

  • uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • please keep these lessons up; these are truly some of the greatest latin tutorials I've found on the entire internet!
