  • Yuck, this means more crappy multiple units for sure :(

  • I like Dusty bins are good trains but are not good for the Norwich services

  • @Ayrshire1trains oi dusty bins are awesome

  • Dusty bins on the Norwich service not good

  • Thers also another thing. Do you think if Greater anglia order 221s do you think they'll name them

  • Good idea mate it means it could switch to Diesel power when London-Norwich gets diverts Through Cambridge

  • They shoud put class 221 on the GEML because they have shops first class and form a 10 car train

  • @Ayrshire1trains A good idea, insert a pantograph coach in every unit and you have a bi-mode train. This means that if there was any major problems on the GEML you could run it from London to Norwich via Cambridge. Ely or Cambridge would be the point where you would switch to diesel power to run along the non electrified Ely - Norwich route. The reverse would apply if you going from Norwich to London.

  • why don't just get some pendos

  • @class321lover You could have Pendolino's operating the GEML but ideally you would want a non tilt version with a wider body to accomodate more seats and they should be at least 10 coaches per unit.

  • the class 180s could also replace the class 90s

  • @class321lover Thats a nice idea, the class 180 has 287 seats per unit. If you combined two units to form a 10 coach formation for peak hour Norwich services they would have 574 seats. They have 2+2 seating throughout.

A problem you would have however is that the total fleet of Class 180s would not be big enough to make all Norwich - London trains 10 coaches so a new build of 100 mph 5 coach unit based on the Class 180 design could be ideal.

  • They should put a 357 onto GEML, they have to expose their real 100mph speed not 75 mph, and also they have toilets! 357's are brilliant for the GEML.

  • @D78stock Good point, 357's are indeed ideal for the GEML as they have 3+2 seating and have rapid acceleration. Some have already operated along the GEML when First Great Eastern hired some of them from C2C to cover for the Class 321's that had been hired to Silverlink. They were deployed on the London to Southend Victoria Route.

  • One major benefit of replacing the existing stock would be the need to use locomotive pulled carriages. When they were constructed there was a law stating you couldnt have passengers in locomotive units. This was the case even with the Eurostar units. Virgin trains built stock after the law was dropped and the new Hitatchi trains also benefit from this. The class 90 was one of the last electric locomotives to be constructed, there is still a big demand for freight use so they can be sold on.

  • @chrismurch007 Ah right, it would be good to use them for more freight use if and when replacement stock for them is built.

  • I don't think it would be a good idea to put 321s on the Norwich to London services.

Thats a 2 hour journey in a basic commuter box with no AC or catering facilities.

It would make the journey very unpleasant.

360's less so. But they still have interiors that are made for high density short-middle distance trips. And again, no catering option.

The class 90s aren't really that old, but the MK3s desperately need refurbishing from the 1970s interiors they have today.

  • @soundseeker63 You've got some good points there, it would indeed be inadequate to run 321's/360's on Norwich - London services due to the commuter style interiors and of course no catering available. The new franchise will have to refurbish the Mk3's both inside and outside so a more comfortable reliable service can be provided.

  • Nice video here. I think 'Great Eastern Trains' would be good to take over NXEA and have some Class 460's on London - Norwich services if the CLass 90's have to be replaced.

  • @ngin350 Cool, having some of the Class 460's on the route would be good. The only modifications needed are removal of the baggage area to install more seating and fit pantographs and AC equipment. :)

  • My mistake - a 12 car H set train would have 1296 seats while a M set 12 car train would have 1356 seats! Its all on their website: cityrail.info

  • @simpletimes222 Now thats a lot of seats. I think Double Decker Trains are a good idea for future train builds.

  • Having a rethink. What about LondonEastern/First LondonEastern? Like LondonMidland. Maybe the Proposed 'Polaris' train for the Intercity. And like a said before have Electrostars for the West Anglia, and still replace the Sprinters with Class 172s. Even though its radical, I think c2c should look to double deck trains for the long term future. Trains like the H sets in Sydeny CityRail network because the route is the easiest and shortest to modify. A 12 car train would have 636 seats!

  • Not sure about stock changes but greart idea with the name changes.

I honestly hope it doesn't change to "Great Eastern Railway" sounds cheesy.

But the worst "Network East Anglia".

My favorite however is "East Anglia Trains" cause I like stagecoach's livery and the ring it has to it.

  • @RouteW12 I like the East Anglia Trains name too. We'll have to wait and see what happens when the franchise is handed over. Merry Christmas. :)

  • 350s are going on the tpe route from Manchester - Scotland what ive heard lol waste of tie 185s are just as fast and an get there quicker going up the non electrified Bolton route

  • @suncoolclose The 350's are indeed going to the Manchester - Scotland Route for Transpennine Express. Will improve capacity on this route with an 8 car 350 being able to cater for far more passengers than a 3 car 185. Yes the Non Electrified Bolton Route is quicker. :)

  • @Desiro360 Yeah increased capacity is always a good thing and most of the Scotland 185s but not all are currently 6 cars long until up to Preston where the train will divide lol

  • The Great Anglian Railway coaches at 1:13 don't look very comfortable...

  • East anglia should have alot more 379s and replace all 317/321s and 360s sending the 360s to transpennine express for the manchester - scotland ones the mancs - preston line is electricfied. More 172s to replace the sprinters and all 170s taken out of service for a compleat rebuilt fitting them with front end gangway (i.e 377s) for easy access and they should keep the loco-haul class 90 do a compleat rebuilt (east coast style)........

  • @Adelante077 Now that is a great idea. The Class 360's would be ideal for the Manchester - Scotland Service for Transpennie Express. The Class 317's/321's will eventually need replacing despite their latest refurbishment. It would be very cool to see Class 379 Electrostar's on the GEML. Yes the Mk3's Rakes would be far more comfortable with an East Coast Style rebuild and the Turbostar's do need capacity enhancements. :)

  • 379s are being built for the Stansted Express service, and will not be used for the GEML. Half the franchises you mentioned could take over haven't even entered into the bid, this video is complete nonsense.

  • @37427 exactly!

  • Virgin just shouldn't have a rail franchise. I think Essex Thameside and East Anglia should merge. 5 car 379s for Norwich InterCity. Buy 172 and get rid of Sprinters they are getting to old. Modernise the West Anglia network. Buy Class 377s or 376s for suburban West Anglia. Run a service regular between Barking via Stratford to Liverpool Street or and even Fenchurch Street. A give it franchise to either Govia or First. We all know 321s will not to replaced because they are not old enough.

  • @simpletimes222 Nice suggestion. 5 Coach 379's with on board trolley services are a good choice for London - Norwich Intercity services. The Class 153's and 156's are getting old and are due for replacing, as I like Turbostars it would be good to see Class 172s working the East Anglia Branchlines. Also new Electrostar trains are a good choice for the West Anglia Route. It could be that First Group and Govia will bid for the franchise but we'll have to wait and see :)

  • @simpletimes222 You've got some great ideas for the future of rail travel in East Anglia, the rolling stock badly needs modernisation. Hopefully the new franchise operator will invest in the rolling stock :)

  • @Desiro360 Thank you. It just because when I lived in Highams Park I hated the 315s and now living in Sydenham, Electrostars are plentiful! I hope the next franchise does spend on rolling stock, Govia has spent over £1 Billion on Electrostars alone, hope they could do it again if they won it.

  • i'd rather stick to locomotive hauling, the amount of failing units is just unbelieveable...

  • @trainlover658 Good choice, at the moment the Mk3 Sets provide the on board refreshments so it is ideal to keep them into the new franchise from April 2011. Also reliability of multiple units need to improve in order to improve passenger satisfaction levels.

  • Desiro360.. You have good comments on how National Express East Anglia may end up to be re-branded either with First or Arriva in 2011.. I made my point on this..

  • I do think that the Class 360's may operate the London-Southend Victoria line and Southminster line to replace these stupid rubbish Class 321's. I like to see if a Class 360 does operate on the line when Southend Airport Station does open in July this year.. I come from Wickford and travel regularly to Southend Victoria and back after been at college.. I love the Class 360's..

  • I do think that either Arriva may get the chance to see if NXEA wants Arriva to be called Arriva East Anglia or maybe First East Anglia instead of Great Eastern.

  • Comment removed

  • After NXEA.. I think that Govia or Arriva may take on the East Anglia network from 2011..

I like the Class 360's keep on the network and run on the Shenfield-Southend line.

And Class 379's to operate the London-Norwich service with 4-12 cars..

I hate the class 321's they are worse.. Remove them completely on the network to give it to either FCC or Northern..

  • Good point, the Class 321's are getting old and probably need replacing.

New Electrostar's would be good for the London - Norwich service with an on board trolley service of refreshments.

The Desiro's would be ideal for the Southend Route. Also the Class 321's are good choices for FCC or Northern to boost capacity :)

  • Another thing is that the Class 90's + Mk3 Stock will probably still be used for a few more years :)

  • Thanks.. I like to see if the Class 321's will move on to another operator instead of serving the Essex routes that the Class 360's are so brilliant and much quicker to operate from Central London's main station (Liverpool Street of course)..

  • 379 are for the London-Cambridge/Kings Kynn and Sansted Express as new trains are most needed on the West Anglia Main Line although they would propably end up ordering more 379s for the GEML, theres also roumers that if IC225 are replaced form East Coast propably half of the fleet would move to the London-Norwich route and possible couple of HST's to take over 170s on the London-Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth while the 170s would be used else where on the Anglia area. but you never know lol

  • @andyncfcgetshypedup Theres nothing wrong with the class 321 units, theyre very well and solidly built! A lot of drivers have told me that 321s are easier to fix when defects occour on them whilst 360s are a nightmare due to the heavy use of on board computers. Also, 379s working the Intercity's WILL NOT happen as the DfT has decided to keep the 90 hauled sets for this job, hence the reason the locomotives are now being overhauled/refurbished.

  • I want First to take it back

Never realy liked the National Express take over

  • Good for you, having First Great Eastern back will be like nothing happened. They had a good quality service for their passengers unlike National Express :)

  • For a matter of fact the DfT has confirmed the Class 321's WILL NOT be taking over the 90's on Intercity routes.

  • Thats great news, I'm glad they're keeping the Class 90's :)

  • I think this video concludes you know nothing about railways and need a life.

  • I know a lot about railways, I constantly check websites for updates.

  • You can talk you love the most crap traction around!

  • Well the Class 379 's which are being built in Derby for the Stansted Services will be able to go over the entire electrified Anglia route as to the new franchise holder GBRF is part of First Group and First have their own problems with the Thameslink franchise so that rules them out the grand Central trains are looking at Bradford not east anglia and the only one you haven't mentioned was DB which already a toe in this country .The others you have shown don't really have the money

  • I agree, DB could be in the running if they have the interest and desire to bid :)

  • Why would the 90's and mk3's be replaced by 321's.... they are far from ideal for that service.

  • No idea, all I know is that nothing major is happening until the big timetable change this December. The Class 321's are designed for commuter use, not for intercity use. I think the Class 90's will still be around for some time to come :)

  • I heard they arew thinking of refurbishing the class 321s to Intercity standards

  • @MrGriser Really, I'm surprised that they are thinking about refurbishing the class 321's to Intercity standards :)

  • I know they have always been more of a commuter train in my perspective!

  • Yes a lot of the fleet on the Great Eastern Main Line are built to carry commuters :)

  • Do you know when the 321s will actually be refurbished. I have noticed that the 360s are recieving a facelift inside which I think is part of their overhaul but I have not heard anything about the class 321 refurb!

  • @MrGriser At the moment there is no definate date when all of the Class 321's will be refurbished. It probably won't happen until after the new franchise company takes over from National Express next year :)

  • What about unit 321 332 does'nt that have a refurb interior?

  • i think great eastern trains would be east anglia trains mate

  • You're right there, East Anglia Trains is a good name but it depends on who wins the bid :)

  • if first droupe took over it would be first great eastern

  • Yes it will, be great to have First Great Eastern back in control :)

  • yee but i liked the ONE livery the best it is still my fav livery:)

  • Good that you liked the Rainbow Livery, I enjoyed seeing it especially on a nice sunny day :)

  • Very interesting, anyone but national express! Hope they don't withdraw the class 90s

  • Hopefully the Class 90's will still be around, they are fantastic machines :)
