Living in La. I was fortunate to see the band many times in their Pre-Crash, Ronnie singing days..I met Ronnie one night after a gig in Monroe La...I was a friend of his driver for that night...He hung around after the show when the other members left..He was signing autographs on 8 traks and drinking a Bud from the car..We took him to his hotel and he was asking for more beer and we had smoke..He was pissed because he was broke and had spent the $50 his road mgr had given him that morning.SAD!

Went to see an old friend in Calmar Iowa, all the way from Britain, and Wales at that. Couldn't believe the lack of hills let alone mountains around there, everything was so flat, and in Wales we are always close to the sea with waves and sea gorged seacliffs which Charlotte Adams from Calmar surely did enjoy with me, in 1985, here in Wales.

The only ones killed in the crash of the Free Bird were lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gains, his sister Cassie Gains who was one of the swampettes, and Dean Kilpatrick. Allen Colins died after many years in a wheelchair following a car crash. Leon Wilkerson, the bass player, died in his sleep a few years ago. Billy powell, the piano player and writer of this song, died recently. Gary, in the print shirt, is still with the band.
@LancairPropJet Unfortunately, Collins was paralyzed in a drunken driving accident, and he killed his girlfriend in the crash. So I'm sure he would not consider himself God, but he was a great guitar player. Listen to "That Smell", he co-wrote it with Ronnie.
I remember the day we got the news. My husband's band knew the Skynyrds. Our friends came to our house. It was an awful day. Everyone was crying. Rest In Peace.
In response to 'where did the piano come from' Billy Powell was a roadie, when Free Bird was born, Ronnie heard Billy play along with the song, Billy was trained in classical piano, Ronned realized the potential with Billy.....
