We have previously used the iRoom iDock. This is much more expensive and quite fussy to try and get the unit to open up to allow the iPad to be removed. The LaunchPort looks like a much simpler and a more elegant solution.
@kaslerpaul OK ... so a couple of things. Firstly it is really easy to remove if you need to. Simply push on the back and slide off each end. But secondly ... why would you remove it regularly? This is designed for people who have a dedicated iPad for their home. The whole idea is that you dock it on to a station and walk away. You'll know where it is next time you want it and know that it is fully charged.
Having seen this product in person I will point out some things that some people do not find obvious...a) an Ipad can be used as an interface for distributed audio video systems b) you can interface it with security cameras, motorized window coverings, heating and cooling system as well as anything you need to control. What this product offers is now you know where the Ipad is, it is always charged and unless a magnet loses its pull, it will never fall off the wall until you remove it....
@tenserrrr in my opinion you would have a ipad in each room. so the kitchen, the computer room, the theater room and the den would have separate ipads and they would all be in a spider network with access to lights, curtains, temperature, TV, hard drive database. something like ( control 4 ) but i would see there being a smaller IPad touch type tablet for small rooms + if u don't wont to hold something huge
This is basically what we envisioned homes to look like in the future. We'd all expect some kind of internal touch-screen computer that managed our house, and we're getting there. Docks like this do one part, now the iPad needs software to control air con and lights (there probably is already!) sure it's not an all-in-one house computer but it's pretty close to what we imagined.
We have just received an early LaunchPort Wall unit and will report back on our findings.

this would be really cool if it was fully integrated into a home automation system with a nice user interface, other than that no real purpose
