I love black soap, yet I think black soap is too alkaline for hair. Hair thrives best with products between the pH of 4-7. It is better to keep the hair cuticle closed as much as possible. Your hair journey progress is really great as well!
Try giovanni conditioner for a deep conditioner. Aloe vera gel in your leave in will help close the curticle. You have a 4 type tightly curly. It needs lots of moisture and probably less protein but as you learn your hair you will know for sure. I commend you on your journey. Peace
I am soooo grateful for your videos!! God bless you!
Concerning the videos dealing with toners and the distributors of the oils you used, here are my questions:
Do you still stick with all of those distributors? I am from The Bahamas and it would be easier for me to order if this list could be narrowed down to the top two or three...what do you suggest?
Do you only apply the toner on your face or can you apply it to the entire body?
@fireflower1979 Hi...and the best of this year to you too hun. The distributors are listed by ranking with the top being my favorites spots. You should tone your whole body especially if you use an alkaline soap like the black soap but I never bother just my face. I do a scrub that's slightly acid each week though just to maintain a balance. Hope that helps:-)
@cocogonenatural Thanks.....You are probably the 10th person who believes I can pull off twists. Twists have worked for some people to minimize the knots too so I have to give it my best shot. I really suck at twisting so I will have to watch some beginner tutorials. I promise to share everything I find out. Thank you for the encouragement :-)
@heycutie9 I agree, since using this organic mud wash Terressential shampoo I love the texture, smell and the wat it makes my hair smell and feel. Plus it gets rid of all synthetic products that you may have used in the past. I can go on and on how much I love this shampoo!!!
@MissCinnamonCake Yep! You are totally right. I hope you have some videos because I will stop by. I have heard both good and bad over Jessicurl..maybe I will look into it in the future..I appreciate the tip.
Congrats. Your hair texture seems similar to mine. I think the growth you retained is quite good for hair texture like ours in the 1st year (I am now 5 yrs natural & 20-21" length). You have enough hair to try small twists or plaits. I also started almost bald & only started styling my hair around the 18th month. The knots at the end stopped when I started stretching my hair (twists/plaits) and my hair also retained more. Try whole milk yogurt, aloe juice + coconut oil as DC.
@Giapretzel Thanks for this recipe. I like it a lot. And the suggestion I have heard braiding/twisting repeated over and over as a way to control the knots so I should really try it. I suck at it but I guess I have to practice. I will stop by your channel when I have a moment for more inspiration.
You are gorgeous not many women can wear their hair that short & still look beautiful. Good luck with your hair journey I'm sure you will reach your goal.
Congratulations on making it the first year! I think your hair looks great and I am sure this video will serve as an inspiration to others who are just starting out.
Love your video for sure we have the same texture hair and issues the key is just keeping it moisturize I big chopped June 2011 what I do is take biotin daily and my hair is almost as long as yours now so take biotin it does help and wearing wigs is what I do also for protective styling but your hair is long to do twist outs you should do it, I know if I can and my hair is shorter than yours I know you can too. So you know when I big chopped I started out the same as you completely with no hair.
@sinnaone1 Huh! Never thought of taking biotin. I will check with my physician. If you had any idea how badly I suck at twisting you would fall over laughing but everyone thinks I can pull it off so I will give it my best shot. Thanks for the biotin tip.
I think we have the same exact hair. I'm from South Sudan and had a big chop about two and a half years ago. I've had the same kind of issues. I was skeptical of shea moisture products but the shampoo combined with treatment for dry/damaged hair does wonders for me. My hair is not damaged but it is dry since my spirals are so intricate. Keep strong.. my growth was slow too and after this long I have what I could actually call a small/medium afro (stretched of course).
@tweehugga0123 Thanks love for the encouragement. It's always wonderful to hear from a fellow East African. I'm glad you have found a product line that works for you. I have heard a lot of good things about Shea moisture so I might try it at some point. All the best with your hair journey
I just had a issue with keeping my twa moist but i got a leave in conditioner and it helps keep my hair well hydrated and my 2 strand twist came out very nice.........i just slicked the sides down and created a cute lil mohawk........i wish u well in your journey......and thanks for explaining what real shea butter is.....you are the reason i found the real deal!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MzYummi404 I'm so glad you found genuine butter. I suck at twisting but I will give it my best shot. I will check out your channel to see your twists when I have a moment.
@jazylady Thank you! That truly means the world to me. Not only did you notice but you said something...You have no idea how much you have made my day!
You can DEFINITELY do a twist out on your hair. And your fingers are slim so you can do it. I recently cut my hair BALD (check out my channel) and I can't wait for it to grow longer. I hope you get >7 inches by next year. oh and I LOVE LOVE LOVE your cheekbones. Can I have them please? thanks!
@cassochinadoll Lol....I truly wish I could give you my cheek bones or loan them to you for a week! Will be sure to check out your channel. I suck at twisting but everyone seems to think I can pull it off so I will give it my best shot. Thanks for the comment love.
I know you think your hair is too short for twist or braid outs, but you should definitely reconsider and give them a try! When I first big chopped after a year of transitioning, I had the same amount of hair as you do and I was able to do twist outs. They stretch the hair more and offer more styling options.
@InsertInfinity You are absolutely right. You would really be shocked at how much I suck at twisting...my hands are just so uncoordinated. Having said that, there are a lot of tutorials on YT and only practicing will help. I promise to give it my best shot. Thanks for the tip love and happy hair journey
@3000misslady Great idea. Will do...I think her hair is a few months older than mine....I hope I am not mistaking her for someone else. Thanks though!
Hey G, Congrats on all your knowledge! I too have had knot problems & have found that keeping it stretched a lil helps a lot! That is something u can do even with your length with chunky twists while the hair is drying.
@MsSassyLaRue If you knew how badly I suck at twisting you would seriously be shocked. That said, I think I owe it to myself to give it a fair shot. And if stretching helps then I am willing to try but I first have to watch some tutorials on how to twist. Thanks for the suggestion love.
@virgivane Thanks love. I have heard a lot about clays lately so I began researching to see how they can benefit my hair. I was leaning towards Bentonite clay but I will be sure to check out Rhassoul...and your recipe sounds easy and wonderful too :-)
@whatoyou Thanks love. And you are absolutely spot on with perseverance and discipline. It truly is the only way. I wish you all the best in your journey as well :-)
Your hair is longer than you lead us to believe you have lots of shrinkage. You can style your hair at that length just practice. My hair.grows faster when its braided up or in twists. I think yours will also. Glad you learned to love your hair and how you look
@locsnatwist I guess you are right but truly you have no idea how badly I suck at braiding/twisting. My hands are just not coordinated but you are totally right I have to give it a fair shot before giving up. Hopefully there are enough tutorials on YT for beginner twisting.
Keep it up, hun! I like your positive attitude! My 1st year I didn't know about Youtube, forums or other info and in my frustration I made every imaginable mistake! It's good you decided to wear your hair, I didn't and when I started to I didn't know my hair! I did so many chops/cuts to fix those mistakes. Now I'm learning alot by wearing it and not avoiding it. Good luck on your journey! You're inspiring. :-)
@Bluepainkiller Thanks love. I have been spared most mistakes only because a lot of women before me have made them and sounded the alarm. I wish I could thank everyone in person. Good luck on your journey too sweetheart.
Your hair looks so incredibly SOFT!! You should try mini twists on your hair. It would look so good with a skinny patent leather headband to hold your hair back. You facial structure is gorgeous! Check out my fotki page for some styling options. My name is CRESCENDA. Hope it will help :)
@anjuness Hi Crescenda..Thanks for the suggestion hun...Pulling it off is a different story. I suck at braiding and twisting. Might have to watch some YT videos before i even try it. I do like the idea and I will definitely drop by your fotki :-)
Hi Duchess! I found the conditioner! The line is called Komaza Care. It's the Olive Mask. It's a deep conditioner. I use the Califia line of Komaza it's so nourishing and the ingredients are natural!! There are others with the line as well, but four type 4 hair like ours it's great! Check it out.
Gabrielle, Very happy for you! Keep you hair moistureized and sealed with a shea butter mixture for hair n skin you know the oils. I happen to like you n a short cut but no matter which you chose your face n skin are lovely.
I have worn a boy-cut or ceaser for 9 years, like the cut n simpleness of maintence. African Export here on the YT does a lot of sampling of products for natural hair n kimmytube, she makes her own, check them out...TRACK
@TRACKtoU Thanks love. I think my hair has grown from the cute year into the awkward and uncomfortable year (like a teen) but no doubt my hair will soon blossom into it's own. I am subscribed to both Kimmay and AE...And you are so right..moisture is the best protection to retain length.
I have one point to make about the fairy knots at the ends. I have a similar texture of hair as you do, and I have been natural for about 3 years now. I had the exact same problem as you when my hair was your length. However, as it grows, it becomes easier to keep it stretched which drastically reduces the amount of knots (even at the ends). So keep the positive attitude and everything will work out in its own time!
@lakiva743 Thanks love. I have to visit your channel for more tips. It's always very encouraging to see similar texture growth progression. Thank you for the encouragement it truly means the world to me. And the very best my dear in your journey.
ugh! i get knots at the end too. sometimes i just stand there with the scissors ready to chop it all off! you can also try shea moisture's deep conditioners maybe? or an avocado/banana/coconut oil homemade one! congrats on 12 months!
@spicyeve OMG! I have felt the same way several times..I am so relieved I am not the only one ha!ha! I will try the avocado/banana first and see if that helps before purchasing any others. Thanks for the tip. :-)
Your hair looks well-kept! You did not say if you tried using a growth aide. A great one that you could try is called Alter-Ego Revitializing Lotion. You could read about it and order it online.
@rhollandnyc Thanks love. I am not using a growth aide because I now understand that the growth rate is all in the genes. I tried growth aide when I was relaxed without much improvement so I just decided not to go there. Actually, the slow growth has been more of a blessing because I would just start pulling it out if there was double to deal with...still learning to cope and manage.
@DuchessGabrielle After my BC, I thought my hair would grow super fast, it grew a lot but not to my full expectation. My second year after I BC my hair is gaining length faster. I think my scalp was out of balance because of hair dyes (I stopped using them and only use henna and indigo). Overall, I do believe the growth aides help, esp. castor oil. :-)
@rhollandnyc I think the word "growth aid" is misleading because no product can make our hair grow..Growth is genetically wired. The products do however, optimize the scalp and fortify the existing strands so hair is strong and healthy. And I agree, castor oil is definitely among them. :-)
My hair does the same thing too at the end that s why it breaks a lot. uh I hate that
