  • The story of love in this OVA is much better told than his (Shinkai) longer 'The Place Promised in Our Early Days'. They are essentially the same story, but this is shorter and less convoluted. Mr Shinkai, you have loved and that is why you can tell us this beautiful story. Thank you.

  • Right now I´m thinking that 3 years are between the date this vid was posted here on YouTube and my comment right now. This is still 5 years less than that message traveled... my god 8 years realy is an eternity!

  • LMAO i got the same exact shoes 2:00 hahahahaahah

  • ...tears...

  • what's impressive is that these characters held onto the same phone for 8 years+

whereas most people change after 2 years-ish. Now THAT'S dedication .

  • 1:28 What a helpful piece of information! "Tarsians are exsting everywhere on Ag harta."

  • That was beautiful. I've got tears in my eyes... T_T Amazing that this was made by one guy.

  • thanks for uploading

  • A great work by Makoto Shinkai, this half of this OVA is amazing. While I was watching, I was debating whether to rate it as a masterpiece or not because I felt the first half was not that strong. This half made it a whole lot better and invoked emotions better to me. The ending really affects me.

  • Couldn't resist watching it over and over again

    Such a touching story

  • not as sad as 5 Centimeters Per Second, but a very emotional film nonetheless.

  • didn't think it was sad enough to cry about but it is.......

  • a very sad and touching movie. if only....

  • I can't imagine how painful it must be...especially lost in the vast obscure space with a slim chance of ever coming back. living in this situation without those whom you love and care for would be so torturing...

  • That was cool!!!

  • Might be the most touching movie ever.

  • oh, and the last comment was just for people to refer to if they're confused about the timeline, sorry to anyone, if I ruined the feel of the ending for them with math lol

  • so...if it takes 8.6 years to send each message, they're only receiving messages every 17 yrs, not 8.6. so, assuming they're the same age, Mikako was 14 when she sent the 1 year message and 15 when she sent the first 8.6 year message which Noboru received when he was 24. she would have received hers at 32, and he would have only gotten his second at 41. But since the war ended right after she sent her 24 year one and it only takes a year to get back, she'd be back by 25 (if they came right back)

  • whats the song at around 4 mins?

  • This story is really sad but thinking about the ending, i think she was rescued cuz when they both say 'i am here', when noboru said it it could mean he is where mikako is like loads of light years away, cuz he knows where she is by the last message and can save her

  • The manga's ends with a little closure. In the end, the Lysithea decides to turn back around but is left with little power. And earth decides to send a rescue ship. Mikako survives and she checks the roster of the rescue ship and she finds out that Noburo is among those who are heading to the Lysithea. And then it ends. So they eventually meet again :)

  • That empty schoolroom with the chairs on desks gets me so strongly, like a punch in the gut. The guy who wrote/animated this is so aware of that indescribable, complex emotion set of regret, remorse, love, longing and acceptance. It really must be what dying is like.

  • Naboru is 24, she's 15? don't you alter in space?

  • @babetiger99 nonono...she send the message and that takes 8 years, thats why she's 15 at that time but when the moment he got the mail, he's 24 already:)

  • @babetiger99 look up "time dilation" on wikipedia

  • This needs to be remade into an anime with starting more before she join the UN to after the OVA ends.

  • so she dies at the end?this is so sad and depressing :(

  • maybe wen the tarsian said "you will see him again" maybe they meant they were gonna invade earth and kill every human in existence

  • This short reminded me of Top wo Nerae!/Gunbuster, not to mention that I saw this right after I finished Gunbuster, so it didn't really impress me.

5 Centimeters per Second, on the other hand, was beautfiul and brilliant. That is ShinKai's best work as of now, in my opinion.

  • The whole point of him receiving the text message at the end was her being dead for the last 7 years.

  • She dies at the end. The newspaper at the guys house at 2:05 says the Lysithea was badly damaged, and won't be able to return. Which is why the ship didn't pick her up.

  • It doesn't show anywhere that the ship didn't pick her up. Neither does it show that she dies. This was pretty much just another one of those cliffhangers that leave you guessing.

  • @manakurei thanks for clearing the doubts :)

  • Yeah this anime is sad.

  • That is when hell of a reviver on those phones. Not speaking with the clarity.

  • 2:06-2:13 they put videos on paper.........huh? just what

  • @badazz5001 OLED

  • I loved this movie. A story where two people are apart trying to reach out to each other. It makes me feel good.

  • せつないTT

  • its funny how, even though this story plays in the future, cellphones still look like they did back when this OVA was made some 7 years ago

i guess nobody expected that cellphones would evolve so fast

  • actually, when he was an adult, he had an orange phone. He probably kept the one he had since he was in, at the earliest, middle school because it was the only way that he would send or recieve messages to or from Mikako. But then again, that's just my guess :P

  • o wait, nvm, my mistake. but then again, it sounded like he was checking another cell phone =P

  • I always get a little shiver at 2:53. The close-up of his eyes is something very characteristic of Japanese cinima in general, and anime is no exception. The way his eyes narrow as he says her name speaks more volumes than an entire monologue.

    What a powerful moment.

  • i cried at the end, this was so beutiful, i loved it

  • love the soundtrack :]

  • i'm touch...luv it.

  • I just love it

  • What does the message at 3:02 say? i gather the sounds are her battling or are they her crying??? or her saying she loves him? but what is written in the message from her?

  • hello noboru who's became 24 years old! I am the 15 year old mikako

  • I think she lives because her at 1:00 has a ring on her finger. by the way was that supposed to be her dead or her future? i think it's her future so it would mean she doesn't die at the end of the episode.

  • does she die in the end? or does she live? i would think she lives and they do one day see each other but ya....that's my hopeless romantic side i guess. Still, I hope she lives.

  • as expected from makoto shinkai, bitter-sweet ending

  • SPOILER!! Do NOT read until you've watched the whole episode! :D

Okay, I've got to ask this question! I've noticed alot of people saying she's dead, but how? I mean, if you think about it, she saved the "mother ship" so why couldn't the ship pick her up? 0_o

  • Yes, me too, I like the graphics, specially of the sky in the Earth, with the sunlight, the clouds, the twilight. Another thing that I find awesome are the piano songs. I want to become able to play them, I have started to have piano lessons.

    I'ts a very impressive production..

  • very impressive. was done by one person sitting in front of a Macintosh

  • Wow this is so awesome. It really touches the heart somehow. It's so pretty! Thanks so much for uploading it.

  • just love it, was so touching...

  • This has to be one of the best anime I've ever watched

  • No matter how many times, still beautiful, thank you.
