this book is good but it should be taken very lighly (no pun intended) when reading it. It's only a novel and while the messages and philosophy may be profound, it's all not true. Rather we should praise kundera for his work and continue reading more of his novels, but if you take this book too seriously, you may find yourself "staring in the abyss", as nietzche put it.
Well, the political situation was unique to that time and place, but all the human and relationship elements are universal. Also, I'm sure it loses something in translation.
I was so glad to be reminded of this book...Like you, I was amazed as I read "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"...I thought for a very long time after finishing it about the complex beauty hidden within the interior of a each person's mind. Again, I appreciate the reminder!
What fascinates me about this book is the depiction of the Prague Spring and Czech spirit as much as the relationships between the central characters

*depressed*
I read it, and the style of writing was good. . . but I didn't like the book; especially the parts where the author talks about himself.
Although I will admit I cried when *SPOILER* the dog died *E.O.SPOILER*
Is there something wrong with me?

@fuzzlefluff I love that the author takls about himself, because that is so different from what is normally done in books.

Only Central Europeans can fully understand it, and I think it was mainly written for them.
