  • does the cam records sound on film?

  • The camera does, but nobody makes sound film anymore. Kodak discontinued the sound version of Kodachrome 40 about ten or fifteen years ago because they claimed that the entire process of magnetic sound on film was ecologically unsound. The sound quality was not really all that great in the first place. It was juddery and harsh.

  • very nice again, By the way this is my super8 channel

  • Nice. I have the 514 too

  • Glad you like them. Unfortunately, my 514 gave out last year, and I picked up a mediocre 814 Electronic. I'm debating on whether I should get a new 514 or get the one I have fixed. The optics were super-schweet.

  • Hi, Thanks for posting these stock tests.

I recently purchased a 514XL-S and have been doing some research into film stocks, and following your comments about using EE lock on Ektachrome 64T, I thought I might share with you a tip I read, which is as yet untested by me. If you tape over the filter notch near the bottom RHS of the cartridge the camera will read the filmstock at 40ASA and engage the in-built 85A daylight filter, which should be more manageable than it reading the film at 160ASA!

  • hey i just bought that same exact camera but i cant find any film for it...do you have any suggestions..

  • Your tests are so helpful! Thank you! (Damn, the Vision is gorgeous!)

  • Glad you liked them. I hope to have some more tests within the next month or so, as well as some 16mm stuff I'm working on.

  • What I like about those Film Cameras is, that the colours look more naturaly

  • That they do, but that's because there's been at least 20+ years of motion picture technology.

  • Hi I have a Sankyo super 8 camera and I am going to get more film which would be better to buy, Kodachrome 64T color reversal film or Kodak tri-actate black & white reversal film.

  • Hello,

Could you tell me the times where the Wittnerchrome 100D footage is ?

    Thanks !

  • It's the entire first half. The less colorful-looking footage is the E64T

  • yah i grabbed a 514xl at the swap meet today im loving it just needa pick up some film for it

  • Excellent. I think you'll love it. Just be aware that if you shoot E64T, it underexposes it by 1 1/3 stop. You'll have to use the EE lock. That's what I did for about half of this video, then I got so sick of it that I stopped, and E64T tends to get a little grungy with underexposure.

  • i just bought a 514 off ebay for 8 bux i got it today its like brandnew works and everything

  • Excellent choice. I think you'll like it a lot. Just be advised that if you shoot Ektachrome 64T, the camera will automatically underexpose it, and it doesn't react well to it.

  • thanks but is there any where where i can buy a cheap wideangle or fisheye i know they make em and some one said its a threaded lens so i just need to find a lense any kind with the same size thread

  • im thinking about shooting a skate video with my canon super 8 same camera you are using i want iit to be different do you think it will get the job done or should i try super16

  • I would definitely try Super-8 first. It's cheaper, and the cameras are way smaller. I personally think that what you want to do would work perfectly in Super-8.

  • is this edited i just bought one if i added brightness and contrast and a little exposure would it look fine

  • No other correction was done other than that that might have been done by Spectra during the transfer. Other than that, it's more or less as the camera captured it.

  • Great footie, I'm a bit new to the whole super 8 thing and just bought a canon 514xl. Was wondering if you have any insight on how to acheive that initial "burn" in the beginning of your clip. Is that just the start of the film or what? Am I an idiot for asking?

  • No, not at all. That's a common trait of Super-8 cameras. When you remove the cartridge, you always end up wiping out a few frames. It's just a natural part of using Super-8.

You should like the 514XL. The cam I used is the same thing mechanically, just with sound. Just be aware that if you shoot E64T, you're going to have to use the EE Lock a lot.

  • really nice done video!! I Like the colour and atmosphere!

  • Thanx. I'm glad you liked it. I'm getting ready to do some more tests, now that summer's finally coming to Chicago. now I'll see what these films can really do.

  • how much does the film cost? and where can it be developed? cause i realy want toget a super 8 but don't know if i can afford it

  • Film prices vary, but the general asking price for a cartridge is anywhere from $18-$40, and again, that's depending on the film you choose. From what I understand, WalMart will develop Ektachrome 64T, but I would not trust them. Negative stocks can be processed at places like Spectra Film and Video or Pro8mm.

E-mail me and I can give you more detail than in this space here.

  • Great colors!

  • Thank you. I'm glad you liked the clips. I thought the E100D looked the best out of all of them. Like I said in an earlier posting, the original footage was even better.

  • in a typical super 8 cartridge how many minutes of footage can be shot?

  • If you're shooting at 24fps (standard sound speed), it gives you about 2 1/2 minutes, but if you drop to 18fps (silent speed), it goes up to 3 minutes even.

  • How was it telecined?

  • Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Spectra Film and Video took care of the processing and transfer to MiniDV. Sadly, YouTube doesn't even do either clip justice, especially the E100D. The sharpness and saturation were incredible.
