I absolutely adored this game, i had the demo from the magazine and couldn't find the real game as the local game shop Comtazia in Dudley closed down dammit.!
this game rocks so much! I only had the demo from the magazine but i spent hours exploring and finding out stuff- it was kinda mysterious. have never played the full game and it's funny to read others didn't either! this, snare and turrican 2 are great
Don't miss the stoned monkeys at 2:22... you could placate them by giving them mushrooms :)
Thanks so much for posting this. There's a video of the BBC version too, but the sound's much better on your video. Post more! :)
I knew Jeremy Smith while he was developing this with Peter Irvin. It was tragic that he died so young.
Exile is still my favorite game. It's an example of so many great things: procedural content generation, characters, plot, physics, emergent puzzles... so cool.
Not proud to say I had a version without a manual. But indeed, that just made the game more fascinating. It was really compelling to figure out all the little features this game had. I cannot describe how I felt when I discovered I could "grab" other creatures. And to this day I still don't know if putting a bee into a jar had any purpose, but it so amazed me that I could do that.
Many of today's games lack the depth of gameplay seen in Exile.
I remember playing a demo of this that (i think) came with commodore format magazine. Sadly i never got to play the finished version but i remember spending weeks on the demo. Shit, what a game!
@robrec0rd ugh. ive played both and the bbc version is very ugly. i really cant see how bbc had better SFX either, unless you mean the very ropey speech. c64 was a better programed game IMO.
I could never finish this. Is there a video showing a full walkthrough and the ending? I swear I won't be able to rest in my grave until I find that out! I always got stuck after getting the icer and being able to control the robot dude with the control you get from out of the fire. That turret on the far right, just above the little gremlins' den always killed me.
Magot.machine? You just have to push it down the cliff - as you've seen it dies and leaves a power pack behind. You have to hurry at picking up the power charge as it's unstable and will explode in a few seconds.
Later you can create powerpacks - it's a bit tricky.
Turrets and robots can be destroyed with the icer gun or with a well aimed grenade (or just a timed kamicase charge).
After geting the icer, you should get the remote controll - you'll need to get trough the fire..
Thank you very much, this was one of the top 10 c64 games ever. I may be saying that because it has fond memories for me, but I think many c64 gamers will agree.
Never before (or after) was there a game that combined adventure with action, in such a natural and fluid way.
Pity the Amiga version lacked the soul of the c64 version, but go figure.
This is an important reminder not to give jetpacks to drunks.

I'd love to see a playthrough of the game.
At best one with commentary.
Unfortunately I lack the patience to finish the game by myself, nowadays.

Progress via experimentation.

Never played this or had C64, but I can tell.
The graphics looks pretty good for C64.

BBC version was the best in my opinion.. different in a few ways, perhaps harder.. but better sound effects. Cool game!
