@Hjerrick they could make charcoal by using some of that cobble for a furnace, put a plank in the fuel square, and a log in the smelting square. viola, 1 piece of charcoal. thus making 4 torches

You can't make lava sources, but you can make water ones if you are in a snow biome (which you are). Put a water source under a cobble block and let it flow a bit, then wait for it to freeze over. Mine the ice. Voilà.

Here's and idea on how to make a better cobblestone generator:

make a hollow pillar of cobblestone with lava flowing inside it from top, and water flowing from the side in a stream 1 or two blocks high (pillar must be at least 3 blocks high) that way you don't need 2 people to get cobblestone and is more fast and efficient :)

I have a small suggestion. If you use some of your precious wood to make a sign, punch out the block under your cobblestone part of your generator, and let the items fall down there, as water/lava doesn't fall through signs. This would allow you to just keep mining and mining, then when you've mined for a while, you may pick up the lava, punch the cobble, and pick all the lovely cobble you've mined.

@funkster505 actually you can easily light a portal without flint, simply put a wall of wood behind the portal and place lava on the other side, when the spark flies off the lava and catches the wood it will light the portal, I've done it before. though the obsidian is still holding them back.
