i own several arge knives including both the bowie and a gurka. ive also been to nepal and thats where i recieved my gurka. it was a gift from a local blacksmith i stayed with on a pilgrimage. (im buddhist) i also happen to be a former soldier, 11b10, a purple heart recipiant, and an avid outdoorsman who teaches boy scouts survival. althow i do like the gurka it is in my opinion a clumsy weapon compared to the bowie. but in the right hands both can be efective.

i like your first knife the few i made wernt the best but if thay can cut the most basic like ropes some wood or meat then am happy abut it looks arnt everything i wasted $ on a good lookin knife that was alwasy dulling and fell a part the cost to make and shape a knife for me is under 5$ for cuting blades :) i have leather for sheths dyes to color the leather hole punch para corde and so on

you are heating up the knife unevenly and it gonna take away wat temper was there!!! you need to fully and evenly heat the knife and then rapidly cool it... dunk the heated knife in old moter oil, water, but you need to make sure that from every point of the knife there is three (3) to four (4) inches of waty ever althe way around...
Not every speck of flying rust that pops will cause permanent vision impairment. Sometimes they can grind the rust out of your cornea with a little drill and you're fine in a couple of days.
@fireball1821 Prices can vary it's best to call around or do a Google search. Another thing to consider is that some yards remove the part for you and others expect you to turn your own wrenches. Leaf springs can be tough to remove and you need fairly big tools so unless you know what your getting into I think it's best to find a yard that pulls the parts for you. Shops that do 4x4 customizing are also worth asking, they sometimes have old OEM springs.

2. Learn a little bit about forge work and metallurgy before you shoot your mouth off. Most modern hand forged blades are heated in GAS forges fueled by either propane, MAPP (which is now defunct), or in rare cases acetylene. Is it wasteful, definitely. Is it dangerous, that all depends on how he goes about it. It does, however, get him forging in the here and now, which I'd wager is a fair bit more than you're doing.
wow dude i took a class on oxy acetylene torch and the first thing they said is safty glasses and gloves are always worn and to NEVER lite it with a butain lighter or there is a chance there could be a fireback and the cylinders could blow. i mean its not that hard just get a spark lighter there proboly $10 max
It wouldn't fire back into the cylinders, simply because the pressure would be pushing the fire outwards. Neither would blow because the fuels aren't mixed. Acetylene, and really anything, wont burn without oxygen. So the worst you'd really get is an uncontrolled fireball till the canister was heated enough to have a catastrophic structure failure.
Oxygen by itself doesn't burn at all. It's reaction with oxygen that causes fire.
u shouldnt use a cigarette lighter to light an oxy torch. wear gloves and some glasses of some sort to, u only get one chance with ur eyes, and im sure you want all ur fingers. its just simple PPE.
ahh:) i see... well... File steel is really hard and if hit hard enough it tends to break but Spring steel is more softer and is Really hard to break... so for smal knives i guess file steel is the way to go but for large knives and swords i would say Spring steel

hey if you need something bigger if thats your limitation go to a scrap or salvage yard and find a nice thick piece of steel thats relatively flat then grinng and polish it and you'll end up with a nice anvil or you could use an old section of rail road track. just stay away from cast iron
thats a bit hard but you may find one around a salvage yard or some place like that they can be hard to find. Just don't go pull one off some tracks thats bad you could derail a train. i'm not saying you would it's common sense. or if you have a relative thats one off those people that has a buch of old cars and miscillanions other stuff piled around their house you may could find one there just watch out for snakes.
on second thought i was just at a scrap yard and foun plenty of pieces of flat inch in a half to two inch thick pieces of steel. they were about four inches wide. they were about eight feet long. but this would work and they were charging 15 cents a pound. i got about sixty somethin pounds of steel and it cost $7.08. look into it just make sure you get steel and not cast iron. wrought iron would also work but you probably won't find any so just look fo a nice thick piece of steel.

As I'm telling everybody else, sorry for the delay in my reply, I've been putting in alot of hours at work. You are absolutely right about that. This video is an older one of mine, back before I had a clue what i was doing. I use a coal forge now. I still use the torch occasionally for edge quenching and cutting out rough shapes, But I make sure to normalize all my blades before putting any kind of work into them. Thanks for the comment!

Sorry. I really wasn't trying to be an ass or anything. Just saying. I've worked with both off and on for a while now myself. I'm right there with you with the forging the knife to shape though. No better way. Again, sorry for any offense that I may have communicated, because there was none intended.
You may want to consider in hammering the knife into shape. As for your forge, look on my subscriptions, it has some great ideas into making a brake drum forge... and just a hint, don't use gas... lol. I am sure its effective but it could blow right back on you! Dont want you to get burned. use charcoal (NOT KINGSTON BBQ CAHARCOAL!!!). Use charcoal made from burned down wood or coal. You will heat the blade better. And I think that vacuum has too much power. Use a hairdryer instead on cold...
Exactly, gas with a venturi style burner is the way to go. Even using a ppre-made torch from Harbor Freight is better than messing around with charcoal or coal (coal puts sulfur into your steel and can make it brittle) and gives an even heat. Just need insulating firebricks and a couple refractory fire brick splits for the bottom of the forge, or use Kaowool with a couple splits in your metal containment, and add a port for your torch/burner. Once mine is done, video to come soon of it!

i own several arge knives including both the bowie and a gurka. ive also been to nepal and thats where i recieved my gurka. it was a gift from a local blacksmith i stayed with on a pilgrimage. (im buddhist) i also happen to be a former soldier, 11b10, a purple heart recipiant, and an avid outdoorsman who teaches boy scouts survival. althow i do like the gurka it is in my opinion a clumsy weapon compared to the bowie. but in the right hands both can be efective.

Nice looking knife there. I just finished a big texas hand forged 5160 bowie knife.
I used no power tools for the exception of my moon walk blower as a bowel.
Check out the abuse test. It's the knife standard for any knife to go through as proof it can hold a razors edge.

i like your first knife the few i made wernt the best but if thay can cut the most basic like ropes some wood or meat then am happy abut it looks arnt everything i wasted $ on a good lookin knife that was alwasy dulling and fell a part the cost to make and shape a knife for me is under 5$ for cuting blades :) i have leather for sheths dyes to color the leather hole punch para corde and so on

you are heating up the knife unevenly and it gonna take away wat temper was there!!! you need to fully and evenly heat the knife and then rapidly cool it... dunk the heated knife in old moter oil, water, but you need to make sure that from every point of the knife there is three (3) to four (4) inches of waty ever althe way around...

Not every speck of flying rust that pops will cause permanent vision impairment. Sometimes they can grind the rust out of your cornea with a little drill and you're fine in a couple of days.

@fireball1821 Prices can vary it's best to call around or do a Google search. Another thing to consider is that some yards remove the part for you and others expect you to turn your own wrenches. Leaf springs can be tough to remove and you need fairly big tools so unless you know what your getting into I think it's best to find a yard that pulls the parts for you. Shops that do 4x4 customizing are also worth asking, they sometimes have old OEM springs.

1. Learn to spell.
2. Learn a little bit about forge work and metallurgy before you shoot your mouth off. Most modern hand forged blades are heated in GAS forges fueled by either propane, MAPP (which is now defunct), or in rare cases acetylene. Is it wasteful, definitely. Is it dangerous, that all depends on how he goes about it. It does, however, get him forging in the here and now, which I'd wager is a fair bit more than you're doing.

wow dude i took a class on oxy acetylene torch and the first thing they said is safty glasses and gloves are always worn and to NEVER lite it with a butain lighter or there is a chance there could be a fireback and the cylinders could blow. i mean its not that hard just get a spark lighter there proboly $10 max

It wouldn't fire back into the cylinders, simply because the pressure would be pushing the fire outwards. Neither would blow because the fuels aren't mixed. Acetylene, and really anything, wont burn without oxygen. So the worst you'd really get is an uncontrolled fireball till the canister was heated enough to have a catastrophic structure failure.
Oxygen by itself doesn't burn at all. It's reaction with oxygen that causes fire.

u shouldnt use a cigarette lighter to light an oxy torch. wear gloves and some glasses of some sort to, u only get one chance with ur eyes, and im sure you want all ur fingers. its just simple PPE.

ahh:) i see... well... File steel is really hard and if hit hard enough it tends to break but Spring steel is more softer and is Really hard to break... so for smal knives i guess file steel is the way to go but for large knives and swords i would say Spring steel

hey if you need something bigger if thats your limitation go to a scrap or salvage yard and find a nice thick piece of steel thats relatively flat then grinng and polish it and you'll end up with a nice anvil or you could use an old section of rail road track. just stay away from cast iron

thats a bit hard but you may find one around a salvage yard or some place like that they can be hard to find. Just don't go pull one off some tracks thats bad you could derail a train. i'm not saying you would it's common sense. or if you have a relative thats one off those people that has a buch of old cars and miscillanions other stuff piled around their house you may could find one there just watch out for snakes.

on second thought i was just at a scrap yard and foun plenty of pieces of flat inch in a half to two inch thick pieces of steel. they were about four inches wide. they were about eight feet long. but this would work and they were charging 15 cents a pound. i got about sixty somethin pounds of steel and it cost $7.08. look into it just make sure you get steel and not cast iron. wrought iron would also work but you probably won't find any so just look fo a nice thick piece of steel.

using the torch tempers the edge before its ready and makes the steel all brittle

just so you know a fire and a fan work better than a blow torch because a fire has more surface area plus a small heat sorce in one area at a time will make the different metal molicoules mix un evenly causing stress cracks

As I'm telling everybody else, sorry for the delay in my reply, I've been putting in alot of hours at work. You are absolutely right about that. This video is an older one of mine, back before I had a clue what i was doing. I use a coal forge now. I still use the torch occasionally for edge quenching and cutting out rough shapes, But I make sure to normalize all my blades before putting any kind of work into them. Thanks for the comment!

You may want to consider in hammering the knife into shape. As for your forge, look on my subscriptions, it has some great ideas into making a brake drum forge... and just a hint, don't use gas... lol. I am sure its effective but it could blow right back on you! Dont want you to get burned. use charcoal (NOT KINGSTON BBQ CAHARCOAL!!!). Use charcoal made from burned down wood or coal. You will heat the blade better. And I think that vacuum has too much power. Use a hairdryer instead on cold...

Use gas. Your lungs will last longer, it's easier to get, and it won't blow back on you unless you are a doofus.

Exactly, gas with a venturi style burner is the way to go. Even using a ppre-made torch from Harbor Freight is better than messing around with charcoal or coal (coal puts sulfur into your steel and can make it brittle) and gives an even heat. Just need insulating firebricks and a couple refractory fire brick splits for the bottom of the forge, or use Kaowool with a couple splits in your metal containment, and add a port for your torch/burner. Once mine is done, video to come soon of it!
