Did the old owner not have friends or family to clean the house after he passed away/left? It's just a little shocking to have food left over after 7 years. Other than that, absolutely beautiful job on the kitchen. Looks amazing. I miss my little apartment watching all these videos.

I love that house! I remember when you guys were shopping for houses and you showed that one. It was a mess, but I couldn't get it out of my head and of all the houses you showed us, that's the one that I could see myself getting, just to fix it up. Kudos! You guys are doing a terrific job. I hope you'll give us a tour once it's finished. :)
I will watch the other vids also about the hose maybe there is an answer there to my question: wow...why did they let the house degrade like that? I understand that nobody was living there for seven years but it still had an owner from whom you bought it. Weren't they ashamed to sell a house in this condition?
Fantastic, you went from buying the place to moving in in 4 weeks - incredible must have worked your butts off. Must have been the vegemite :) by the way the fridge compartment needs to be at 5ºC -18ºC is correct for the freezer. Great job on the kitchen.
Man thats awesome you live in japan! when i was 15 i went to japan for 3 months to live with my brother on Yokota AFB, we went all over japan it was amazing. Ever since than my only dream is to go back. i dont wanna be a doctor or a movie star. Im 23 years old now and still just wanna be back in japan someday :)
Wow, I couldn't imagine that it would look so amazing after renovation. Now I'm really looking forward to see the other rooms after renovation, as well :) Keep up the good work ;)
I really do love your videos! I love the renovating parts! D::D but I'm wondering, will you take pictures/make a vid of the rooms when you've decorated them also? (I'm fairly interested in interior design ;D) btw. the kitchen looks quite crowded with the fridge/freezer being where it is. you could try placing it next to the sink instead! and not go for so "deep" shelfs on the wall!
I imagine the pass-thru from kitchen to bathroom was for heated water from the stove to fill the bath before running hot water was introduced to the house.
Let me suggest something as you renovate : LED lightbulbs. The newest ones can be VERY bright and have a great color to the light. Plus they use very little electricity...I use a 8W bulb over my kitchen table and it's a bright spotlight that looks great. Check them out..they pay for themselves.
Do people who like Vegemite like Marmite and vice versa?
So do I. I've heard so much about it and by the description of it, on how it tastes, I don't think I would like it but I still want to taste it with some toast. :)
Wow! What a difference. Well done for taking on the challenge of an old house, esp in Japan! We own a 100 yo QLDer so I understand the fun of renovating, but it is hard work. Great stuff.
I can't believe the family left it like that, I'm sure they kindly "removed" everything of value from the house, To leave food in a house like that is just insulting to their relative as well as to any buyer.

I think you've done a wonderful piece of hard work on that house, my sincere congratulations. I do have a question... Since you did have the chance to go "down to studs" on the walls, and because of what I've heard about Japanese lack of insulation, why didn't you take down the old clay (which I am also happy you kept) and insulate and cover with the sheeting?
@Raessentia - They paid 200,000 (U.S.?) for it. But it consists of a nicely sized house, with several outbuildings, on a humongous lot! Quite the bargain.
@TheJapanChannelDcom Hey I wanted to say I loved all your videos, been watching for few months now, gone back and seen them all :-) .Love to see more Thx from Canada
@KuroiNeko2bz Haha, what a coincidence!! On other platforms, I name myself KuroiNeko!!! In addition, I play LoL, too! :D And obviously, we both like Japan!
Love those window shelves. Great for things like plants or whatever. I actually have a dish drainer on mine that holds the dishes upright and drains down into a pan. Sunlight is the best thing for killing any nasty germs if someone in the family is ill. We seriously have less colds pass around since I started that and also wiping the phones, door knobs, and light switches with a little bleach water daily during cold season.
So I figured an old timey japanese farmhouse wouldn't have a dinning table area in the kitchen like us westerners do, so did you clean that area up so it could be like that? or would there normally be some sort of short table in that area for eating at or tatami? or was it just a storage area before?
PS: good choice on pinting the shelf white up top, it'll help in lighting up your kitchen, with the outsides ambient light during the day.... ^,^
and Don't sell yourself short, LoL....You got that new house of yours look excellent in such a short time, so Kudos! To you guys on the restoration of your home.....
1 thing though, about how much larger in (X's) would you say your new house is, over your old Apartment? ?_? ?
Actually, LoLz!! You look a bit more like 'Bill Murry' playing 'DOCTOR Peter Veinkmen' off of GHOST BUSTERS, I luv it!! That movie was a classic..... ROFL....
I Was Half expecting to see SLIMER floating around in there behind ya, lol......
The location of that stove is scary, one step backwards and you'll fall off the floor into that stairwell. I think a small railing to prevent that would be an idea, or extend the kitchen so that drop isn't there. That refrigerator very expensive. "The R". Love these videos. I just feel sorry for the unskilled laborer. I think you're being a bit harsh toward him and his lack of skills. Anyway, that place is shaping up nicely!
A question - from what I've put together on my own and via your videos, the Japanese can be very meticulous, thorough and unecessarily overzealous in their work and will often see their approach to it as a reflection on them... so HOW could the real estate people present a house in such condition? Not so much the structure, since that's a natural type of wear... but the trash, the decaying food, the oily machinery... it just seems terribly odd and unlike the common attitude I've observed.
Love how your refer to yourself as the "unskilled labourer".
Great job on the kitchen! I can't imagine how disgusting that must have been to clean up.
Do any kitchens in Japan have upper cupboards? Here in North America the vast majority of kitchens have upper cupboards, but I haven't any in the videos of Japanese kitchens I've seen.
Any problems with infestations in the kitchen? I know you said earlier that you did not have a problem with white ants, but what about cockroaches etc.?
Unskilled laborer, make sure your secret identity is not compromised. Especially since your nemisis "Autralian Lens" seems to be following you around...
This series of videos is VERY entertaining man! I really enjoy them. Good luck on your house man. I'd volunteer to help you with some grunt work, but being on the otherside of the pacific makes it diffcult.
nice. i think the unskilled labourer has gained quite a bit of skill for certain tasks. Maybe he doesnt work as quickly and efficiently as someone who has been doing this for a decade but it looks great!
hopefully he doesnt hurt himself too much. take care!
The kitchen was the best restored area it looks like new, that fridge is big and very well stocked with the all important Vegemite, good job mate best of luck with the rest of the home.
What a transformation. You have done an amazing job to this old house. I wonder why the former owner left it in such a terrible state, with dirty dishes in the sink and rotten food.
It looks amazing after what you guys done! I didn't want the video to finish!
I have a question, I am not sure if this was asked and answered before, but why would they sell a house before they clean it? I noticed from your other videos that they really sell/rent the house or apartments as it is! I would never think that a place like that would have a hope, but you guys did amazing job!
I'm to OCD irrational to think that with ever be clean enough again EVER! Although it looks so nice now if you didnt tell me and i we're invited round for tea or something id never guess it was in such an awful state before. I can't imagine leaving everything..even out of courtesy it would be on the front of my mind everyday
I am interested in what this "Kitchen Sheeting" is that they are using. I have old plaster walls in my house that are cracking all over the place and I do not want to cover them with thick gypsum board. Is there is a specific name for the stuff or is Kitchen sheeting it?
I have this idea; since you put all that work into that house do you think you'd be able to sell it for twice the value? I'm not saying you should, but dang man, you put in some hard work in that house. It looks fantastic!
Nice .....very nice.....you know Iam sure from you and yours there will be a lot of appreciation and satisfaction ...you'll have....once everything is finished.....it will be delightful....and it will fill good to say.......That unskilled guy did a GREAT job...with his unskilled work...lol lol ....Thanks for sharing....loving this...I wish I could help, Iam here in the States...bored.
hi good job man looks really good love the before and after shots just wanted to know can you give us an estimate how much you spent on repairing the kitchen and all ? thank you

Chuckled as soon as I saw you open the fridge to see the vegemite :D

Unskilled laborer, make sure your secret identity is not compromised. Especially since your nemisis "Autralian Lens" seems to be following you around...

This series of videos is VERY entertaining man! I really enjoy them. Good luck on your house man. I'd volunteer to help you with some grunt work, but being on the otherside of the pacific makes it diffcult.

nice. i think the unskilled labourer has gained quite a bit of skill for certain tasks. Maybe he doesnt work as quickly and efficiently as someone who has been doing this for a decade but it looks great!
hopefully he doesnt hurt himself too much. take care!

it seems like the kitchen was not meant to be in that location and rooms have been repurposed over the years.
was the last owner the first owner?

Is there is a specific name for the stuff or is Kitchen sheeting it?
nagaempress 1 month ago
I have this idea; since you put all that work into that house do you think you'd be able to sell it for twice the value? I'm not saying you should, but dang man, you put in some hard work in that house. It looks fantastic!
