This whole issue is very debateable and there are pros and contras. Impossible to take a side without deep study and even then the dam is impossible to stop. Brazil needs energy to develop. The developed countries should have seriously studied alternative energy sources 30 years ago, now it's too late. There are many other issues which can still be changed and avoided. You should all be very worried about SOPA and PIPA!! This is something the american citizens should really get on to NOW!!

@ sparkyj99: When I said short sightedness I meant that dams such as this can dry up neighboring bodies of water that help to furnish other communities with fresh clean water. So, the dam will effect/displace thousands of people because they will not have access to clean water. I think it's alway good to investigate but they'll only know the long term effects in hindsight. Just a thought.
Don'tbe such a ninny? what kind of comment is that? sounds like something a British colonialist might say to a poor native indian boy... ohh thats right - Brasil is a colony, and the powerful elite are expoliting their resources like the racist fascists they are... poor Brasilians
if the indians dont cooperate they are often killed ~creating a massacre situation~it is a forced suicide for them to fight~these people live in constant angst and fear~this is only the begining~belo monte is going to destroy more and more because it is the gateway project to the growth acceleration program in the amazon~many more dams will be built and the mining will expand~as well as ranching and farming~there is no place for them to go they will be chased around forest everytime they settle
~~> Could it be, that Brazil is smarter then WE?? This state job will put money in the pockets of the workers & the villiagers, thus prompting economic stimulus while building a better electrical system thru renuewable energy that will not rely on black gold... Tho there may be ecological issues, it will prove to be a nacessary evil when populations are on the rise & the old infrastructure is no longer sufficient... WE could learn a thing or two on what to do & what not to from this example
@sainttammy ~~> Where is the shortness in sight?? I wouldn't want to live in a slum of shacks one on top of the other... There is nothing wrong with expansion... North America has land preserves, does Brazil not?? Some states have geo-thermal power, which provide low cost energy, if Brazil sold this project to a corp, well that is a different matter... Living with antiquated infrastructure only ensures the dependancy on a "saviour" when it fails giving way to the debt to rebuild...
@filipechannel no they dont ~they are doing this for other reasons~the energy produced will only power the mining operations belo monte~~which only has a 30 year contract by the way~is a gateway project to destroy the amazon creating devestation to the indigenous living there~in FEAR
Salmon fishing and the lives of those dependent upon it (native Americans) is forever adversely affected by the hydroelectric dams of the Pacific Northwest.
Why not relocate this fisherman and the others at an ideal location near the dam where they can continue on fishing and so forth afterwards. With the billions that are going to be spent on the dam why not also build these people their new homes and have some professionals exhume the graves and relocate them also. Give them some money also for the pain and suffering that will occur due to moving. In otherwords, don't be so cheap.
@Mardasee Sadly, the whole ecosystem will be trashed for a while. The fishing will probably be severely impacted. But yeah, I get your point: they should treat human beings better.
@Mardasee That is the plan, but when other dams were constructed here, many people didn't get what was promised. Also there r indians living close to the river that r already suffering with dirty water that is coming from the beginning of the construction. Fishes are gonna decrease and they gonna have problems. Not to mention the intention of building other dams to function together with this one that is gonna destroy indians lands. The people that live close to the river don't want this dam.
@Mardasee And there are ecological issues too. Many species are gonna disappear and the beautiful place they want to flood to construct the dam is gonna turn into rotting biological material. It's such a shame.
@Mardasee they wont~if the indians dont cooperate they are often killed ~creating a massacre situation~it is a forced suicide for them to fight~these people live in constant angst and fear~this is only the begining~belo monte is going to destroy more and more because it is the gateway project to the growth acceleration program in the amazon~many more dams will be built and the mining will expand~as well as ranching and farming~
We as humanity should be ashamed to accept this, it is not a Brazilian problem it is a humanity´s shit !!!!!! Very sad, tragic, horrible
