Football players wear tons of pads and are tackled to the ground (full body contact), which hurts a lot less than a flying strike (pin pointed). You ever watch MMA? Notice how they kick and punch to hurt people, not just tackle. Furthermore it's the back of the neck, which is arguably the worst part to get hit in because it tends to be a bit close to a thing called your brain stem.
