sir... aap kahin bhi raho.. aap, aap ho rahoge... aapka aura... aapki voice, ... aap q chale gaye... sob sob... saddy saddy mood... aapki gazals sun ke hi toh jinda hian kai saare log...
You gave us so much in the form of your music. It will last us all our lives and for generations to come. In return all we can give is a big THANK YOU sir.
I always liked your music Jagjit Uncle, but what you have done for Mirza Ghalib's ghazals, it is just phenomenal. We will always remember you, may god bless you and rest your soul in peace.
@MrNss777 Vaayiz is the person who actually makes the announcement that it is time for prayer. This is the meaning given to me by my best friend who is a muslim.
Here are the meanings of all the ten verses of this ghazal as I understand them. In this TV drama only five verses are presented but in the Divaan-e-Ghalib compiled by Prof. Yusaf Salim Chishti they are ten. The verses sung in this YouTube version are in this order: 1, 3, 8, 9 and 10.
Thanks shunz0007 for liking my explanation of Ghalib's ghazal. I saw people explaining some verses, so I decided to ride the wagon too. I am glad that I was of some help in making you understand the meanings of
1. Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi Ki Har Khwahish Pe Dam Nikle ...
"Khwahish" means desire. "Dam Niklalna", to fulfill one's desires quickly. "Armaan" also means desire. "Armaan Nikalna", to satisfy one's desires.
Meaning: A man has countless desires that he wants to fulfill promptly. The more desires he fulfills the more desires come up. It is a never ending process. That is why every person says that although he has fulfilled a lot of desires yet there are a lot more that he longs to fulfill.
Dear lovebemine1, thank you for you comments. I am glad that I am of some help in explaining the ghazals of Mirza Ghalib. Several people have tried to explore the depth and many layers of Ghalib's verses. My explanation is a humble effort in this respect.
2. Dare Kyun Mera Qaatil? Kya Rahega Uski Gardan Par Vo Khoon Jo Chashm-E-Tar Se Umr Bhar Yun Dam-Ba-Dam Nikle
The poet says that all the blood in his body has dripped out of his eyes and nothing is left. Therefore, his beloved should have no fear of slaughtering him because nobody will be able to blame him for shedding his blood as there is no blood left in his body any way.
3. Nikalna Khuld Se Aadam Ka Sunte Aaye Hain Lekin Bahut Be-Aabru Hokar Tere Kuche Se Ham Nikle
"Khuld" means paradise.
Meaning: Everybody knows that Prophet Adam had to leave the comfortable and blissful life of paradise. It is indeed a great disgrace but the poet has been thrown out of his beloved's quarters in a manner which is much more disgraceful and humiliating.
4. Bharam Khul Jaaye Zaalim Tere Qaamat Ki Daraazi Ka Agar Is Turrah-E-Purpech-O-Kham Ka Pech-O-Kham Nikle
"Bharam khul jana" means losing one's reputation; to be exposed. "Qaamat" means height. "Turrah" means forelock; curl; tuft. "Pech-o-kham" means entangled.
Meaning: If the tuft of your hair is untangled and straightened, they will sure be longer than the tallness of your height. This will make you lose your reputation of being exceptionally tall.
5. Magar Likhwaye Koi Usko Khat, To Hamse Likhwaye Hui Subah Aur Ghar Se Kaan Par Rakkhar Kar Qalam Nikle
The poet willingly offers his services to everybody in writing letters to his beloved on their behalf. The reason for this is that he will know how many people are interested in him and what they want to say.
6. Hui Is Daur Main Mansoob Mujhse Badaa-Ashaami Phir Aaya Vo Zamaana Jab Jahaan Mein Jaam-E-Jam Nikle
"Baada aashami" (wine drinking), "Jaam" (drinking glass), "Jam" stands for Jamshed,an ancient king of Iran. "Jaam-e-jam", drinking glass of Jamshed
Meaning: In the present age nobody in the world is a bigger wine drinker than me. It is due to me that Jamshed's drinking glass gets more and more publicity and popularity. People have now started to say that Ghalib is Jamshed of his age.
7. Hui Jinse Tavaqqo Khastagi Ki Daad Paane Ki Vo Hamse Bhi Ziyaada Kushtah-E-Tegh-E-Sitam Nikle
"Khastgi" (distressed), "daad paana" (to get sympathy), "kushtah"(killed),"tegh-e-sitam" (sword of oppression), "kushtah-e-tegh-e-sitam" (highly distressed persons).
Meaning: In this world everybody is suffering from the adverse circumstances. The people whom we expected that they will sympathize with us due to our precarious condition were more miserable and distressed than we are.
8. Mohabbat Mein Nahin Hai Farq Jine Aur Marne Ka Usi Ko Dekh Kar Jeete Hain Jis Kaafir Pe Dam Nikle In the second line "jeete hain" means we are happy, "kaafir" means beloved and "dam nikle" means whom we love.
Meaning: In love there is no difference between life and death. We live looking at our beloved for whom we die, that is he is our object of love. In other words we are extremely happy by loving our beloved.
9. Khuda Ke Vaaste Parda na Kaaba Se Utha Zalim "Zaalim "stands for "Vaaiz" (preacher). "Parda uthana" means to uncover the reality of religion. "Kaafir" (infidel) and "sanam" (statue) both stand for beloved. "Kahin aisa na ho" means certainly it is like that.
O preacher, for God's sake don't lift the cover of Kaaba. I am sure you will find my beloved inside. When you uncover the reality of the religion, you will find out that God is everywhere, He is in Kaaba as well as in the idol temple.
10. Kahaan Maikhaane Ka Darvaaza ‘Ghalib’ Aur Kahaan Vaaiz Par Itna Jaante Hain Kal Vo Jaata Tha Ke Ham Nikle
This verse is a very good example of Ghalib's satire. He superbly exposes the hypocrisy of the so-called preacher. It is like a short story in verse. He says that the preacher's piety is well known. Indeed he and the bar's entrance are way apart. But I can tell you this much that yesterday when I was entering the bar, he was coming out of it!
@ahmedkhanniazi1 why dont u post the translation and meaning ? many listeners cannot appreciate the nuances and the fine lines of the urdu poetry here.
@sbharara Khuld literally means eternity, refers to paradise that Adam had to leave in despair, Ghalib here says that "have heard of the departure of Adam from the paradise, but that's nothing compared to the embarrassment that I faced when I was forced to leave your(my beloved) surroundings".
Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle Bohat niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle Khuda ke waaste parda na kaabe se uthaa zaalim Kaheen aisa na ho yaan bhi wahi kaafir sanam nikle Kahaan maikhane ka darwaaza Ghalib aur kahaan vaaiz Par itna jaantay hain kal ...

mohobbat me nahi hai fark jeene aur marne ka
usi ko dekh kar jeete hain jis kaafir pe dam nikale
In love there is no difference b/w living and dying
(we) live (survive) by looking at (admiring) the very sinner who we die for
khuda ke vaaste parda na kaabe se uttha zaalim
kahin aisa na ho yun bhi wohi kaafir sanam nikale
