  • Helpfull

  • ta-ta very much :))) from VIETNAM ^^

  • For slang meaning of ''Gay'' is not a word finded out by Mr.Duncan.He just shows how to use it.He is very respectful to everyone as far as I understand.there is no bad intention for it.Chill-Out! Gubbay (my slang means good-bye :) )

  • I'm an American ESL Teacher who sometimes uses Mr. Duncan's lessons in my Speaking and Listening classes. I could/would not use this one though because of how the word Gay is presented. We've made an effort to teach our young people not to use that word to demean or ridicule others by using it in such a negative way. It's not acceptable in the U.S. anymore because it's offensive to many people. It's too bad since the rest of the video is good.

  • i like you to be my professor:)

  • I've heard some people say that they disagree with Misterducan when he speaks about the slang "gay", which means unfashionable, useless, etc. Nowadays it seems that you can't say anything because it'll always be considered descrimination or something like that. So, don't blame him, blame the English language.

  • "Fag" - means cigarette... I didn't knew that. But it can also mean homosexual, or feminin man.

  • @ciutacu just remember that misterduncan is british, and it is probably a british expression,

  • Haha the gay part, hilarious! :) Also, yeah I've heard of the ones from America.

  • awesome!!

  • Your fit.

  • Thanks for your answer and attention. Certainly, I'll explain to my students this point. My students LOVE your videos and I also show them to my coordinator. She just loved them!

  • Dear teacher Misterducan, as a teacher, I'm really disappointed with this specific part of your video class, when the word "gay" is presented as unfashionable or useless. Some of my students watched it and they asked me: "how come, teacher?" I always deal with my students in a fairly way and I respect them. Moreover, gay students are usually dedicated, but they felt upset for that. I tried to explain them that this is not Misterduncan's point of view, because YOU ARE SO NICE, but it's a shame.

  • @MyNeonblack The problem with some words and especially slang is that they can mean more than one thing. Some words can have a positive or harmless meaning in one place and a negative or offensive one in another. This is what you must explain to your students.

    (Misterduncan)

  • @duncaninchina Yes but i think use "GAY" like a rude word is a shame.... i prefor don't know how to use it in that way.

  • @duncaninchina great answer mrduncan.. MyNeonblack didn't even understand the meaning of gay as you meant it.. keep up the awesome work!!

  • @MyNeonblack The problem with homosexuals is not their particular choices about their sexual personalities. It is, in fact, the fact of that a majority of them make a point of being gaudy. Here in Brazil, "gay" is derogatory in this sense. As stated in this lesson, a "Fuddy Duddy" person. So, MisterDuncan was, at end, right.

  • @MyNeonblack It is true that the media is doing a lot of propaganda to put the "gay" in fashion. Here in Brazil was discussed in the congress the "kit gay", a propaganda to be sponsored and distributed by government in schools. It was not approved. Sexual freedom, yes. Place as the pinnacle of "fashion", no. "Gay" is "out of fashion" in this sense.

  • @MyNeonblack are you suggesting he not teach the language? a student needs to know all the words that he/she may hear regardless of whether or not it /could/ be offensive.

it's also silly because homosexuals started calling themselves gay to get a better image when gay just meant happy. now gay means both happy and homosexual so the idea of being offended at the word gay in whatever usage is just... silly.

  • Teacher, I'm your fan!

  • good one

  • awesome... Sick! (new addition)

  • It's very nice!

Thanks for this video,I learned English slangs. :)

    Thank you very much!

  • I Love the way you teachhh :D

    GreetingS from Brazil :D

  • Lol. This teacher cracks me up. But he's very good... It's the way a language's got to be taught really... It doesn't have to be tedious. Slang is quite important, too. I'm from Argentina and been learning English for almost 5 years now. If there's something I've worked out myself that's that you never finish learning a language lol.... there's always something that's left to be regarded.

  • I admire you!! appreciated!! from Japan

  • Good teacher!

  • "See ya, wouldn´t wanna be ya" - i heard that in an english movie called Beautiful Thing, my favourite movie and one of the reasons why i love England. = )

  • Does the word "gay" meaning useless have anything with "gay" (homossexual)?

    (Sorry for my bad english)

  • @BaulerRicardo Gay means homosexual. ;)

  • @BaulerRicardo Yes, it's slang within slang. Originally gay meant happy or carefree, then it became slang for homosexual and then-for homophobic reasons-became slang for useless.

  • @Balsiefen ** Unfortunately, I'm disappointed with that slang. I agree with you... just homophobic reasons to become a so-famous slang becomes the meaning fot useless!

  • @BaulerRicardo Yes.

  • chick is still used where i am. america, so maybe it's different in Britain.

  • BYE-SI-BYE MR.DISH!!!

  • Very cool video, however, here in the United States the term "fag" most certainly doesn't refer to cigarettes.

  • @fi7thy Haha yeah, it refers to the useless ones, as referred to in this video... sorry.

  • Learning English is far-out

  • far-out lesson and pretty awesome teacher!

  • Thanks a lot. I've just learnt a lot of things which I never knew for the past 4 years

  • Sir, Ur tutorials r very informative n nteresting.

I am basically a b tech student.I hav a brother who doesnt know English.

Can u suggest me how to teach him English?

I mean wat proceedures should i follow to giv him a good knowledge and sources for learning English? I can speak english well .. but the problem comes when he speaks i a wrong way n asks me y not the other way.I cant explain the gramatical mistakes to him.Plz suggest me something to do reg. this or rather some good sources.

  • @Syamal23 Show him these videos & get some grammar books from Amazon UK or WHSmith if you can find them there...if you like in the UK that is...?

  • I LOLLED WHEN YOU SAID CHAV XD english is my first language but i wanted to see these teaching videos, i wish there was good videos for french or something lol :L

  • thanks mr duncan.i am living here in birmingham for the last 3 years and still i dont know the slangs,.i live in asian area. and really i want to learn real english like english people, because i love this language. today i learned some slangs .i feel more confident now.i ll watch this video again and again to memorise it. anyway thanks dear mrduncan.i can teach you urdu or punjabi.lol

  • ver supab

  • what about "sick"?... you are sick! is you are cool...like this... right?

  • @yanghee7303 In America sick means cool. In England & the rest of the UK it tends to mean disgusting. Like you say 'that is so sick'... it means that is so disgusting x

  • Cabbage also means money . :D

  • Hahaha are you a cheerleader now Mr.Duncan ? LOl you are really fun dude :)

  • lmfao the only slang words I've heard for money are "dough, cash, green, paper, benjamins, and moolah" that's it, never readies or anything lol..

  • @MsDieDeutsche I've heard readies before. There's also wonga & a monkey, pony etc...! Loves it!

  • mr duncan don't said .. ta-ta for now :(

  • why mr duncan isn't making any more videos now. is he alive? i'm really concerned about him. mr duncan, turn back and make more ones

  • Thank you so much for your lesson to share to us. I love your lessons so much. I like British accent coz' I understand it so well 55. I'll follow your lesson as far as possible. ^_^

  • god. this lesson is very useful but i'm getting a little tired to remember them all.no wonder many people give up using english as the second language. how confused and complicated it is. but. thanks mr duncan. hehehheehe

  • I learned some english slang and I am a native US english speaker

  • @godsmack1985 Same here. LOL

  • nice video. It might have been good to note also that you don't really want to go around in the USA saying the word 'fag' because it is a derogatory word for a homosexual. It's also pretty tacky to use the word 'gay' as a negative adjective even though people say it a lot.

  • After watching this, as an English student my accent went british now ahaha.

  • fancy a fag? fabulous!!

  • What does "See ya ... wouldn't wanna be ya!" exactly mean? Isn't it supposed to be offensive?

  • @TheDenislava It has no hidden meaning. More specifically, it means "I don't want to be in your situation." For example, when your friend gets in trouble with the boss, wife, etc.

  • I don't mean to be offensive, but maybe you should tell your viewers that two countries can have a same slang word, but they can mean something totally different (ie. In America, fag doesn't mean cigarette, but homosexual as well as gay). I just believe that it's an inportant concept to understand so you don't make yourself look, well for a lack of better words, stupid. :)

  • @xGROUNDLERx - its always the same Americans laugh because we call cigarrettes fags. We also call Gays Fags. However, we are bright enough to make the distinction between what is being talked about. For example I could say to a mate "have you got a spare fag, jesus, look at that fag over there." Although this might be replaced by something like mincer/homo/bandit or something else to separate the two.

  • @england1413 so are you insinuating that we Americans are idiots because I assure you, I am no idiot, and I may be in a country of people who act stupidly, but that does not mean we are all stupid, and as you say bright. It is funny to most people here in America because we never call cigarrettes "fags" a common term for them is a "square" for example "Hey, you got an extra square?" Now not everyone here in America talks like that, most of us have more dignity than to talk like bumbling fools.

  • @yinyang1530 @yinyang1530 apologies I didnt mean to come across like I did, I thought after I had posted that I should not have posted in such strong terms. I think I was just trying to show that we can say both and still know what's going on. The English slang video here is quite limited especially for London, but still interesting. Watch "has stacey lost the plot" "sam and biancas fight over ricky" and "jay confronts phil and dawn" for London accent/ a few bits of slang from EastEnders.

  • I have been watching you teaching awesomely!!!

I want to comment something that deserves you great teaching. However I can only now say. YOU BRILLIANT

  • bye-si-bye.........cheerio ..its awsome wrods heheh thanks mr duncan

  • Your videos are very entertaining to the native english speaker as well. As an American, I've only heard of about roughly a third of the british expressions, so it was a treat for me to watch it and learn some new vocabulary.

  • thank you Misterduncan, you are the best!

  • i iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii hoooope so

  • good that you exist! Every day I learn something cool with you

  • whatever you're on, i want it, now...

  • i thought before slang is an accent..hahha.. now i know. thanks to you mr..

  • Many thanks ;D

    tata

  • i think gay mean lively isn't it? normally describe a personality or behavior of human or animal?? not often use with things or good like shirt... I am so surprised.

  • deadly helpful! :)

  • excellent!!!!!!!!!.... thanks a lot...!!!!!

  • I often hear "chick" and I've never thought I could be offensive! I just thought it was another way to say girl. For ex "she' a nice chick"..does it sound offensive?

  • we love you Mr. Duncan...........from the MALDIVES

  • my teacher showed this video to us . it's was funny ,and weird now that i know the meaning of fag and gay

    thank you=]]

  • oh mister duncan you are amazed person and funny ahahhaha i like so muy your training, actually im learning yourself!! hahahha greet from peru to you

  • Mr. Duncan thank ya so much! My teacher asked me to make an extra information about "Slang" and, thanks God, I founded your awesome video! :) :) :)

  • You're a bad man Mr. Duncan. I Fancy all of your videos and you. Tar-aah and bye-si-bye lol

  • I REALLY FANCY YOU...

  • MrAirest, the word "badonkadonk" is a slang word used for a woman's buttocks, especially if they're round and a litte large. Another term meaning the same thing would be "booty." Be careful who you use the term with, because some may find it mildly offensive.

  • thanx sahira. really do appreciate.

  • thank u so much misterduncan, not only did this help me but also made it crystal clear. thanx again.

  • 80% of the time, you use "an" before a word beginning with a vowel. The other 20% depends on what is being said. This is also another rule in English, and the french have the same rule.

  • The rule is, you use 'an' when the following word begins with a vowel sound. eg 'hour', 'honest' and all words beginning with vowels.

  • thanks a lot really it increase knowledge

  • An S .. An L...An A .. An N ...A G. The reason why I put 'an' before the others and not G is because the phonetic sound of these letters begin with a vowel sound. For example L. The first phonetic sound of this letter is 'E' (ell) and 'S' (ess) and 'N' (enn), But 'G' does not (jee). Hope this help.

    (Misterduncan)

  • No naren because in english, you never say "an" before a word that begins with a consonant.

You only say "an", if the next word begins with a vowel. You don't say "an monkey", because the word after an begins with an M, which is a consonant.

Give me an apple < correct

Give me a apple < incorrect

If you use "a", the next word should begin with a consonant

If you use "an", the next word should begin with a vowel. I hope that is clear.

  • tnx very much :) your lessons are realy cool ;)

such intresting way of learning english

Tnx a lot...from russia with love)

ps: How to translate the word (Bydonka donk?) I dont know how to write this word corectly)...But i want to know meaning of this word) tnx tnx for lessons

  • "EMO" is a slang word? o.O I didn't knew that!

I only thought that was a style L.O.L

well, emo's are shy persons ...

  • Well Slang can be any word. A noun or verb or adjective. 'EMO' comes straight from the word emotional. It describes a certain fashion style and a person who appears 'deep'. To be honest, slang can be anything you want it to be, as that is its very nature. I'm often criticised for giving you these words, but the fact remains that they all exist. Perhaps not in your street, or town...or even country. But exist they do!

    (Misterduncan)

  • @natz428

    t's abbreviating of "emotion"

  • thanks for doing this hard work Mr Duncan. You are doing a good job.

  • Thanks Mr Duncan, it really helps me to read the UK newspaper~ :)

    some englisch slang words x).

  • very good Mr. Duncan that's very cooooool

    thanx alot

  • some of the slang terms in this video i have never heard of before

  • ah "emo" is my favourite slang word! i didnt know what a lot of the British and Australian slang terms were...

  • english is my first language... i find most of these comments about english slang quite amusing.

  • As a suggestion, it might be good to state whether each word has a positive or negative connotation so as not to confuse people. for example 'egg-head' may mean someone who is intelligent, but is not necessarily a compliment...

  • you're devoted expert in visual teaching

  • Is saying that sb's gay offensive? Depends on interpretation I think ;P

  • Awesome man!

  • Cool!!

  • I liked cancer stick and graveyardnhours lol

  • Great job mr. Duncan.

Thanks a lot of Mallorca, Ta-rah

  • In Scotland we also say 'spof' for a smart person who sticks in at school and stuffs.

  • Mr.duncan please give examples for every word,it is very hard for me to use these words in a sentence.thank you for your videos they are awsome:-)

  • in the US, it's beginning to be looked down upon if you call some thing "gay", since it is being used as a place holder for homosexuals... in using it in a derogatory way, you are in a way downgrading homosexuals. many schools are actually considering it a swear

  • Very interesting, sometimes I heard similar words and I didnt know what was mean...now I know...Big thank's...

  • I like Mr.Duncan's videos. They're very interesting!!!

  • it is cool video.

    Mr.Duncan is a awesome teacher.

  • @4307147 AN awesome teacher. ;) AN not A

  • Great- awsomeolicious

  • Its not a fag in America.

  • Dude i got a bad crush on you....The only problem is that i am a Guy......What to do now?

    I like you so much

  • When talking about or to a woman, using the word "chick" is not offensive at all in the US.

and LOL fag is NOT a cigarette, or "cig"

  • I've heard it used in that context...

  • orly? I guess it could be. I've never heard it used like that but Im still 18 and in high school and dont smoke cigs and people my age use it as a derogatory term synonomous with calling someone "gay."

  • can you ever imagin that you have some students in iran ?yes you have but i never get why you call yourself as MISTER ?!!! NOT MESTER

  • Mr. Duncan in England you are doing excellent job. keep it up.

  • when we say emo we don't mean a shy emotional person. we mean they cut their wrists. at least in the US. if you get called emo thats a pretty bad thing unless your joking around with someone. usually when they call you emo is if you wear black all the time and seem emotionless even though wearing black all the time means goth, not emo....
