It seems to be more common than not. I'm very wery of setting up too close to the crossing in case they misjudge the distance & get smacked. I'd hate to be the one that caught the after effect of their stupidity.
It basically scans the train for an assortment of defects then transmits it's findings via a radio signal. This one also tells train speed, train length and axel count.

Yup. It's picking up the DD about a mile up the track. The tail end passed over when you begin to hear it.
