Wow. I knew that Steve Miller covered this, but I hadn't heard the original til now. I have to say, this version is far far better than the Steve Miller version. Their cover of this just seems schmaltzy by comparison. Thanks for sharing!
@attackofthepacifists I disagree. I like Miller's version better, but this is still awesome. This turned me on to Paul Penas music. If you havent heard is other stuff, I highly suggest it.
@penisfuckeye - (smile, nice name by the way). It was because of Steve's top 10 hit with Jet Airliner that Paul was able to make ends meet and take care of his wife who was ill for many years. He just quit music to do the right thing. He unfortunatly also died a couple of years back. His album "New Train" of 2000 is absolutely great. Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Bad News. I went to a tribute to Pena at the Great American Music Hall about 10 years ago. Paul was not there but many generous people who could play the doo or other cool instruments hosted a fund raiser. Very cool cat. His bio is more interesting than most fer sure. Thanks for this original original. SMB also rocks easy.
From what I've read, his second album never saw the light of day because of a management / contract dispute. Steve Miller received an unreleased copy from the producer who happened to be a member of the SMB.
I do believe this was the first time Jerry Garcia was recorded playing the steel guitar. I picked this album up about 6yrs. ago and it definitely is one of my top ten.
I can't believe it ! never knew of him as the author of this piece. His version is great. I probably listened to it 20 times in a row. Thanks for posting it
First I've ever heard this version. I was always under the assumption Steve Miller wrote it. I much prefer this version as it's just pure blues and so much soul. May also be because I've never really liked Steve Miller.
@ioanpena anybody got the lyrics? I can't hear shit! Pls. help a half deaf aging bass player who stood his ground in front of a wall of Marshall and Fender amps too long.../;-]
As one bass player to another, wasn't it fun to see your pants legs blowin' in the wind? I played on a 1969 Fender Jazz bass and it was plugged into a Fender Duel Showman with two 15' JBL's.
I learned of paul pena from the song genghis blues good horses, then i had seen the genghis blues movie 4 hours ago and i just heard this song it's amazing since i grew up listening to stevie version.
@MrArbiter2112 Steve Miller paid royalties to Paul Pena too, which was his primary source of income later in life. Miller was the opposite of Jimmy Page and other creeps who stole blues songs and never paid a dime.
@mikedeviant That is because Steve Miller had more class, humilty, and respect than other performers and creeps like Jimmy Page who stole blues without paying a single dime of royalties to them.
@TasteForDisaster There's 10 examples in the YouTube video "Led Zeppelin Examples of Plagiarism" by DeadEros - Remember to read the info below the video.
@AliIKarimi I respect him for not taking any songwriting credits for the song despite changing it around. Paul Pena is listed as the sole songwriter and this was his income for years.
@mikedeviant to quote from a good source, "Back in the day it wasn't stealing, it was paying respect. The original musician would take it as a compliment that someone dug something they created so much that they themselves wanted to add their own bit to it. Whether it be a lick or a whole song, blues musicians have been borrowing from each other forever."
Kudos to badnewsbarnett and youtube for posting this incredible artist and my favorite song. I was blessed to know Paul in Massachusetts in the early 70s and have played my cassette of New Train to as many people as I could for years. SMB's version was cool and deserving of the fame and fortune, but doesn't hold a candle to the pure emotion and guitar mastery of Paul. Please tell everyone you know to come and listen, They won't be disappointed.-
@5henangn I heard about this from the show Crap from the Past, devoted to some of the most obscure music and other stuff that isn't played on commercial radio.
I'm glad you posted this and shared the info.both are great learned something new.definitely like the original bass line it's alot more funky.as for lyrics I like both .thanks for sharing. These things are lost very easy
Just to get this straight, Steve Miller is a living legend, and has payed his dues as much as anyone else playing with the greats like Muddy and Buddy Guy. His cover is not a commercial "middle class repackaging", but rather a tribute from one great musician to another.
I feel sad that I never knew who this person was while appreciating other great music and performers through my lifetime. Listening to this song, along with other songs that Mr. Pena performed make me think that he had the potential for being one of the greatest performers ever while he was on this earth. Man! - what happened? Why? I am a fan for life. RIP Paul.
I love Steve Miller -- but this original Jet Airliner by Paul Pena blows poor Steve out of the water! It's energized to an unbelievable degree. Fortunately, I understand royalties from Steve Miller's version kept Paul with some steady income. Pena is not under-rated because an audience would have to know about him -- then ignore him -- to become under-rated. Pena was just a footnote in music when he should have been the front page story. He deserved better.
Classic case of white boy packages black man's music up for the middle class and cashes in. Paul should have got way more royalties from Steve's version.
Steve got rich, Paul got busted.
I still play this song once a week, and nothing against Steve's version, which has the juiciest Strat sound of all time.
Both good versions, but I notice that one of my favourite parts of Steve's is the baseline, which this guy invented. Wicked bass.
His voice takes the song to a new level. I only knew of SMB version. Now I dont like it as much, I hate that, I thought it was their song now its just a stupid copy.
While I really like even earlier Steve Miller, I think he very much did this song an injustice. Paul Pena wrote and recorded this excellent tune and Steve sold out on it. . . .

"I don't want to get mixed up in any of that funky shit that's going down at home ."
@LeCutter Garcia plays on Venutian Lady, which is just as good as Jet Airliner. One of my favorite trivia questions is, "Who wrote Jet Airliner?" After they answer SMB, I tell them about Paul and whip out my phone to enlighten them.
Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for posting. This may be my favorite blues track now. I love how SMB tightened it up for a rock audience but kept the spirit of the original. This is a gem!
I can honestly say that I love both Pena and Miller's versions equally. I would dare to compare this to listening to Clapton's versions of JJ Cale's songs. I will be at the check out line with a copy of this.
I seen the documentary Genghis Blues and I do remember in the film where they played a small part of this song and it is very nice to hear the whole song.. thanks
@guysan - The first exposure I had to Paul Pena was through Genghis Blues and I remember rewinding to the part they play Jet Airliner over and over again. It was so different than the cover. I had no idea at the time the SMB version was a cover of Paul's work
Always amazed at how little I know, Thought SMB wrote this, Thank you for the enlightenment. I'm a huge fan of music period. Love to rock hard (i'm a bass player). But love all kinds of music, especially the blues. Thank you again.
Not bad at all.. But I think steve millers version is one of the greatest songs of all time.. listen to it on a plane on take off be fore.. on the road . I love it. never gets old.
Love both versions, but personally, I like Steve Miller's better. It's more upbeat, he worded some stuff a bit better, and he structured it in a way that interpreted to me easier. If somebody disagrees with me, that's fine. When it comes to songs that have two great, commercialy succesful versions, there will be MANY different oppinions! That's just mine. I could understand somebody liking this better, though. It's all a matter of other personal musical tastes.
The adage "Nothing is new under the sun" just shows that you still learn after years of schooling. Hearing the original version is great and one would never know about it if it wasn't for YouTube. Now I am curious who about Paul Pena. It seems with even all these blues greats of the past, he did not get much press from the Rolling Stone. Again thanks, for getting my interest up!

Yeah, well, if that shite logic and people at your dairyqueen were what decided good taste in music then the greats would be forgotten, and the Jonas brothers and Miley Cyrus would be what was know as good taste... because, everyone knows who they are right?... um... coincidence...

Put up or shut up tough guy.
While this is a good bluesy version, Stevie Miller's rock n roll version blows this away, sorry. Go on Pena fans hit me with your negatives all you want but Miller's take is 10X's better.
That is an incredible performance. I listened to it several times. I really connected with me. I never heard of Paul Pena until half an hour ago. I wish I had heard his records 30 years ago.
@badnewsbarnett I know this reply is late in coming but I just wanted to say that YES, YES, YES, I did finally get "New Train" and it is by far the most incredible CD that I own! Thanks for the video.
It's a shame he died. Yeah, HIS song. And always loved Steve's version, but I have to say Paul's version is much better. I reccommend his album. NEW TRAIN It's awesome. Also go for the documentary "Genghis Blues", that's how I bumped into Paul Pena. Great soul.

How come people got more popularity than him covering his songs?
I agree in certain cases like Randy Newman's song covers by other groups and singers was better than his original song written.
But Paul Pena's songs performed by him first were better than Bruce Springsteen and Steve Miller covering them.

Again thanks, for getting my interest up!

both paul's en steve miller's versions are good
but you have to listen to paul's version a couple of times to like it which isn't the case with steve miller's version

I think both Steve miller and pena our good
however you really have to listen to pena's version for a while to like it which isn't the case with the steve miller version

Yeah, well, if that shite logic and people at your dairyqueen were what decided good taste in music then the greats would be forgotten, and the Jonas brothers and Miley Cyrus would be what was know as good taste... because, everyone knows who they are right?... um... coincidence...

@buffalobraves9
was that in response to me or all the people that responded to your first post?
the popularity of the musician is no indication of their talent.
do i need to explain how difficult it is to learn how to throat sing? i've been learning for almost a year. that's why i respect paul pena so much.

Every song on New Train is remarkable. Paul was 22 when it was recorded.

While this is a good bluesy version, Stevie Miller's rock n roll version blows this away, sorry. Go on Pena fans hit me with your negatives all you want but Miller's take is 10X's better.

Soul is it for sure. This song, performed by Pena, has more feeling in it than SMB could muster across their whole career.
BrackBert 2 years ago
It's a shame he died. Yeah, HIS song. And always loved Steve's version, but I have to say Paul's version is much better. I reccommend his album. NEW TRAIN It's awesome. Also go for the documentary "Genghis Blues", that's how I bumped into Paul Pena. Great soul.

I had been looking for an original version. I'm a big SMB fan, but Pena did an awesome job coming up with this tune.
