todays "music scene" is but a blihk.like cigarettes to nicotine its a delivery vehicle for todays air heads of which, unfortunately there are many at present.
fortunately a lack of combustable material means they wont burn bright very long.
I've been a fan of Bill Nelson and BBD since my friend and CBS Records (London) Executive Dave Moore introduced me to the band in about '76 or '77. This stuff eclipses anything out now. Too bad the music industry of the 21st century is in the state it's in.
I totaly agree with sludgefingers, "I bought this in the summer of '77 and loved the guitar solo" too.
I can even remember where I was when I first heard this track, I was with my best mate and two girls, at Bristol Zoo. We were sat on the green listening to the Alan Freeman Show on a Saturday afternoon and "Fluff" played this track, the rest is history.
i am childless but i have 2 nephews who are both guitar freaks, they both think steve vai is wonderful so i played this to them and they couldnt believe that this music was being played in the olden days in the 70,s.listen and learn boys,
thanks for the great post...I lent this album to my good friend Andy, he took it to his grave a week later, he could not have taken a better tribute...and for me? the knowledge of knowing through me Andy is now rocking hard 'down below'...yea that's right I can hear him say: "down below that's where I belong a ha "....
I bought this in the summer of '77 and loved the guitar solo. A pity he seemed to go a bit 'anti-guitar' in the following years with the Red Noise stuff etc.
Alert! ITV Legends TV show, featuring Bill Nelson, 26 March, Metropolis Studios, London. Full band, Be Bop Deluxe songs, recorded live for a DVD release, once in a lifetime show.
This is probably my favourire piece of guitar playing ever! You would struggle to find any other guitarist who can evoke so much emotion. Be bop deluxe were the first live band i saw in 1978.
I bought this in a walgreens in pehokee Ga. in 1978 in the cut-out bin for 3.99,not the "white vinyl" version, but still, had never heard of 'em before that....
My favorite guitar solo of all time. It has amazed me since this album's release in 1977. Bill Nelson is a criminally overlooked and underrated guitarist. The same can be said for Be Bop Deluxe as a band.
My all time favourite guitar sosl and I alwys thought that this was the definitive version until I heard Bill play it at Nelsonica in York last month when frankly he took it to a new level. its almost criminal that he has not had the recognition that he deserves, but on the other hand, he has never sold out and has remained true to himself. A genius with integrity
The man is a genius, lovely expressive playing, the gorgeous tone of the Gibson semi through the Mesa Boogie amps, complimented perfectly with Andy Clark on the Fender Rhodes, I only saw him on the Red Noise tour (I think it was '78) and they were crap! I just wished I'd seen this classic line up
The top 'never mentioned in the normal music press' icon, only ever seen one thing in MOJO Mag in 10 years about Bill and that was a Eastwood guitars advert.
I guess he is too private for the media to be interested, he inspired me and I will love him forever for being the greatest emotional player since Hendrix.
1.48 get in !!!! one of the best solo's ever played, this is the best version ,was into these aged 13 ,,,,49 now still love it ,god i had a shit hot taste as a kid lol
I got "sunburst finish" lp when I was a teenager (just for the cover alone) then the music took me over. I still have that lp along with "axe victim" and 'live in the air age" FANTASTIC music no ones ever heard!!!
ARRHH... i was actuallt at this recording. My first ever proper concert. It was life changing. I shouted into the crowd microphone "ships in the night" with my mate and it is on the album.
Bill Nelson has influenced so so many. other worldly interpretation of emotion with a guitar. Truly amazing.
@waymanjones1 Agreed. There's a live version of "Comfortably Numb" that PF does where Gilmour plays a comparably amazing solo. However, this, I believe, is THE guitar masterpiece ... wonderfully complemented by the light key solo following.
I can always come back to this song here on YT or on CD and it never fails to evoke wonderful imagery and transport me to places that I have to believe Bill Nelson intended with his guitar tapestry.
@popgrubbs Love your comments. Perfectly expressed, like Bill's effortless playing. I love how the members of this amazingly wonderful and so underrated band gave space to each other, to display their individual musical expression. As a result, we as ardent fans got to be blessed with a wonderful legacy of superb music, unsurpassed by any other live performance, by any other band. Truly breath-taking and can transport you to a dream state. How lucky we are to have had Be-Bop deluxe. RIP Charlie.
@00Muttley You really hit it on the head with the notion of 'evertless' playing. So much was communicated in his playing. Add this to his expressive vocals and we have something for which we should feel lucky, as you say.
This album and this song in particular had a huge influence on me as a young musician, and im glad to say that it still dose all these years later. Thank you Bill.
This has been a Top favorite of mine for Decades now!
How wonderful it Must be to catch your performance as well as your song, solo , time , life , effort and Band to a Wonderful ,Stellar Performance and Live on Forever, & Ever, & Ever,& Ever, & Ever,& Ever, & Ever,& Ever, & Ever..... Endless Cheers to Bill Nelson and His Awesome Band!!
Monster Nice! Glad to see big fans of BeBop Deluxe and Bill Nelson! Seen um several times. Have all the albums on vinyl! Even Bill's first album. I am an axe victim, hung up on these Silver Strings...
His guitar is the palate, his fingers are the hairs on the artists brush, your ears are his canvass......... IMHO this is the musical equivalent of The Mona Lisa!
There's something about having soul in one's guitar solos, rather than just pyrotechnics and shredding. Bill's got it and David Gilmour. Not exactly the same styles, but both guitarists transport me with the emotion and soul in their playing.
@popgrubbs FZ had it too, IMHO. Him and Bill have that same feel when they solo. A friend of mine knew I was into FZ, and one day he says, "Check out this solo, and tell me who's playing." Immediately I say, "FZ, but that don't sound like Bozzio..." Then he hands me this album, and says check this out.
This was my first exposure to Fritz Lang's proto-Nazi sci-fi "Metropolis," my first (and only) white vinyl LP, and my first exposure to BBD and Bill Nelson--quite a trip.
Try calling it up on two screens and start Bill's solo on one just as the piano solo begins on the other so they double track.
Hell yes! I love it,saw this played live 3 rows from the front Bradford St. Georges Hall 1977. One of the great underated guitarists ever. Thats also why I have a Cherry red sunburst Semi (1970,s Epiphone)

My favorite solo from Bill Nelson. He flows with this so nicely. It's one of those songs that makes me think to myself ( wish I could play like that.) Unfortunately I can't. Thanks for this post.
This, in my opinion, is perhaps the sweetest, most fluid electric guitar work, and live at that, I've ever heard. I saw Bebop for $2.50 in Fort Worth in 1977, and they ROCKED!!!!!!
I must thank you again for posting this vid. My wife of over 20 years, who, when I met her, was already a HUGE fan of Joe Pass and Barney Kessel, walked into our home office while this was playing, and she said (in her soft "Oooh.........yessssssssss" voice) "Who's THAT?" Over the years, I have had the pleasure of introducing her to Steve Howe,Steve Morse,Joe Satriani, Gary Moore........and now Bill Nelson. The rich tapestry that is this version stopped her in her tracks. A thousand thanks !:)
Somebody somewhere along time ago, maybe his dad, mother, uncle, friend or just himself put a guitar in this mans hands for the first time....... they could never have imagined something so beautiful was being created !
Bill Nelson what a star. Too young for be bop deluxe but saw bill nelson and the practical dreamers in Leeds 1981. Seen over 300 concerts but this is still the best.

Oh, God bless you !!! A thousand thanks for this version ! THE BEST !!!!!!
