@darkbeetlebot worse did come just a month later. Hurrican Rita was way stronger than Katrina but got hit with an area of high pressure coming from Texas and caused it to weaken dramaticaly to a catoagory 3 when it hit landfall.
God I love hurricanes, they are the coolest things ever. I hope we get the biggest one in history this year. I hope it kills thousands, I hope it hits New Orleans again, that would be soooo awesome.
the music really helps to illustrate how absolutely menacing and monstrous that thing was. it's kind of weird how there hasn't even been one named atlantic storm in 2009 yet, but all this went down just 4 years ago.
Katrina was a Cat 5. Its storm surge was still at category 5 strength because of its size and was a Category 5 up until 6 hours before landfall so it had some residual cat 5 energy at landfall.
@madbengalsfan85 Actually Ike and Katrina were Cat 5 heading towards the Gulf of Mexico and the Cat 5 storm surge was already on the way when it weakened to Cat 2 or 3, just like Katrina. She died down from a Cat 5 to a Cat 3 in 6 hours.
@theBumruckus, where u here in south Louisiana? did you see what that storm did? i know i did; first hand, in person watched as just the sustained wind ripped live oaks out of the ground with the roots still attached. I sta in the house and watched as the winds ripped nailed and screwed in plywood from the windows and tornadoes passed by, constantly spawned from the storm. If you want to say something catty that that, then go ahead, but if you weren't here then i suggest you keep yourself quiet.
I live in Gonzales, about a hour from new orleans, and the media comes in saying how devastating this is, and its actually worse. they say the whole 9th ard was destroyed, when it was just so much more then the 9th ward.People from Louisiana, realize tht but others dont.
Amazing video. It's so sad to helplessly watch as the hurricane makes landfall over the Gulf Coast as a monster, destroying many towns and cities. It's just amazing (but so sad) how New Orleans was changed forever in a matter of hours.
I live in Plaquimines Parish in southeast Louisiana. We were hit first by this monster of a storm, the media hypes up the destruction of the city and the 9th Ward but you cannot even imagine the destruction this storm caused at "ground zero". Remember, New Orleans was 60 miles on the west side of the eye. We were not as fortunate....The only thing I ask of the country is to keep us in their prayers.
really, I think it's just the physics of a planet, if the planet gets overpopulated global warming takes effect. in our case at least, other planets migt not have global oceans, so they might progress to a higher level, although without an ocean you might not have a stable weather system.
Dimmu Borgir sounds good to this!!! lol

It peaked at cat 5, but it weakened before it hit the city.

Yeah, supposedly to a Cat 3, but they're full of it. Cat 3's don't produce 30 ft. surge.
It was at least a Cat 4.

@volcrazy89 Ike was a Cat 2 at landfall but it produced the surge of a Cat 5...the size of the wind field would be to blame
