An SMG is merely a automatic weapon that uses handgun (9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP) rounds. If you had an auto pistol like the Glock 18 (shown on vid), you would use 30rd mags and no stock, not what the guy used, and you fire in short burst to adjust.

That's the glock 18 with obvious magazine modification and a stock - the glock 17 cannot fire in full-automatic.
