Totally agree. Too bad with politics, and mis-education diesel isn't has popular. That's why the Prius doesn't sell well in Europe, they know better. But Sheeple in the U.S. got sucked into the Toyota marketing blitz. Don't get me wrong, its good to be progressing and cool technology, but for now I'll stick with the diesel that has a more engaging drive and torque to boot, also not a turd like the Prius. Plus there are plenty of Prii, change it up a bit.
I own a 2009 Jetta TDI. It is quite simply the finest car Ive ever owned. It's well appointed and super solid, fast as hell and quiet. On a 9 state tour right after I bought it I was getting into the high 50s in milage on the highway. I have 2 sets of wheels for it.
I have a Golf TDi and tow my roadstar on a tendem trailer. In Pensylvania, it is on cruise control, 5th gear and makes it way up the hills. You're speaking of a 1.9 L, towing a load of 1100 pounds. Max torque at 1900 RPM. Canadians have driven diesels VW for decades !
Not true that diesel engines last longer than gasoline engines. There have been several BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and GM engines that have been less robust than equivalent gasoline engines.
I've been debating between a BMW 230xi, a Mercedes C240-4matic and the Jetta TDI but I think I'll stick to theJetta. And you are right I always associated diesel with loud and clunky. I know someone who has a diesel truck and has to plug it in every night in the winter or it won't start in the morning. Thanks for the info it has been very helpful.
That is a very good question! As long as the car is 2005 or newer you will get the saftey that the 2009 offers. However 2009 was the year that the TDi became 50 state legal. With that came the clean burning TDI motor that won 2009 green car of the year. You will not get the same performance with the older motor. The torque was enhanced in 2009 as well as the 6 speed DSG transmission. Anything before 2009 is a continuously variable transmission, better known as CVT. Thanks for the q modster2007!
The 6 speed dsg is also available on older model TDI's. The main difference between the 2009-2010 and the pre 2006 model tdi's is that the new one is common rail. Which means it's alot quieter and puts out alot more hp and torque.
Hey I havent heard of the DSG on older TDI models previous to 09. DO you know what years? I would love to know for future knowledge! thanks for sharing!

Very informative but will I get the same diesel, safety, and engine performance quality from a 2003-2006 or do these only apply to the 09 model?

Umm vw has no CVT transmissions on their TDI's. In fact I don't think they have any CVT transmissions period.

Spyster007 : No CTV transmission , so what ??? Tons of torque !
