  • Very cool commercial

  • Sounds like it was on WGN

  • @gaguy1967 It was in the 1980's

  • MILF

  • Gene Hackman does the voice-over for this commercial

  • If she was truly a good mother, she wouldn't be flying off to New York, but staying home like a woman should to raise her children. JK!!!!!

  • 0:25. OMG.....was that the World Trade Center? How sadly ironic. : (

  • @GeorgiaKev well that was before the 911 attack

  • @MegaGansta24 Yes, I know. I'm not THAT young! It still breaks my heart every time I see pictures or old videos of the World Trade Center the first thing that comes to mind is how they were destroyed on that horrid day in 2001.

  • @GeorgiaKev are you from new york??

  • @MegaGansta24 No. But I've visited NYC several times when I was younger.

  • @GeorgiaKev oh

  • I will really miss the tulip...

    :'(

  • @SouthAfricanAirways1 So will all of us, heh, after over 30 years its sorta like a family emblem for a lot of employees.

  • Pre-school and kindergarten classes don't last that long. lol

  • @AWorldExposure, um I think this was supposed to be an overnight trip for this mother in the ad.

  • @MrPman851 Nope, Day trip, Drop your kid off at Day-care / Pre-school, go to the airport, 2 hour flight meeting lunch meeting, home in time to pick up your kid.. Its really not all that uncommon actually.

  • 727 on the outbound, DC10 on return and a 737 the gate.

I think this was all shot at EWR

  • For some reason, I don't like flying United, but deep down in my heart, there is always a place for United.

  • @ie210, mine too. If only I could fly United's "friendly skies" with pride.

  • what is the name of the song that is play in this comercial

  • @castoresnegros 'Rhapsody in Blue' by George Gershwin.

  • I remember this commercial. I used to think this was what all parents did while their kids were in school.

  • One of my favorite commericals of all time.

  • What an awesome commercial. Brings back old memories when this commercial use to play back in the day.

  • I flew United for the first time in June of 2009. The check-in staff were beyond helpful, they were suffocating. At both airports I had two women simultaneously jump and me and help me every inch of the way with the checkin kiosks. I like the blue bellies of the planes now and the tails aren't bad but I wish United would return to this retro livery.

  • Ah, a 727... Workhorse of a plane.

  • I love the theam music to united airlines. As I was watching this I was getting goosebumps and chocked up.

  • I consider this to be one of the great commercials of all time because it tells a complete story in a very short time. The story is strong and solid, yet contains plenty of subtleties. All in 60 seconds!

  • Ahhh the days where flying was something to really be happy about and look forward to

  • This commercial brings back memories growing up. The commercial is memorable in its time. No I am not drunk tonight. =)

  • LOL I FEEL THE SAME WAY!!!

  • Regardles of what United is today.. am still. very proud to be a part of this company..... and have the opportunity to represent our

    name in every country.

i just wish and pray that someone

    would come to our rescue

and help us bring back the real

    United Airlines.

  • to: Kyurst

I think that United Airline has to reform its company culture for continuous improvement.

Staffs and Crews must think that leadership come from everyone care for small details and its is about team dynamic.

  • I don't enjoy flying...but it's a necessary evil.

I don't enjoy air travel..we are being shuffled like cattle.

Once in the air...seeing the sunrise on the horizon.

  • Dear Bluenight8062,

In your commend, you mentioned "being shuffled like cattle".

Is this what is happening in the domestic flights in USA?

I am from Hong Kong and all your flights are international flights. I have no idea about domestics in USA.

  • United used to be great. Now the closest you can get (unless you can afford first class) is to fly Southwest. They are employee-owned, so they still care.

  • You are correct. It is a great airlinr in 60s to 80s, but not anymore.

I have not travel by southwest because it has no route between Hong Kong and USA. ( I live in Hong Kong) However, I can image that every crew will perform their best bacause they are the sharehold of the airline?

What can you like and enjoy United Airline in its golden age? What is the best experience about flying with United Airline in the 60s to 80s?

  • Guitars break United!

  • United breaks guitars!

  • United breaks guitars

  • Always loved the Gershwin music in this commercial, and thought the "mom" to be very beautiful. I'm not 100% sure, but I think she went on to play opposite John Ritter in the movie "Skin Deep". I wish IMDB had thumbnails of the full cast.

  • Yes her name is Chelsea Field...she was also Bruce Willis' wife in The Last Boy Scout

  • i love gershwin...combined with united airlines...greatness :)

  • So they decide that to advertise an airline, they show absolutely everything that happens... apart from what actually happens ON THE PLANE.

What kind of fucking logic is that?

  • Hugely big, or hugely stupid? Can YOU spell parallelism? This is one of the best ads of the 80s, a lyric paean on how superlative service can make even everyday evil necessities, like air travel, effortless. Would that level of accommodation, and viewer understanding, exist today, ON OR OFF THE PLANE!

  • I'm sorry, but was that last bit meant to be a question or a statement?

    "everyday evil necessities"

You fly every day? Rich bastard...

  • you don't know the fulle story, huge. he (or she) could have the flights paid under work, it could be his work. Ever thought about the full picture, i dont think so. And anyway, if he can afford to pay to fly everyday, then don't be cussing... if you would like to do that then you should go out and make enough bucks.

  • Cussing is just something I do, btw. Fuckin' love it.

  • the whole point of the ad is to show what the benefits of on time travel, and a good schedule mean, instead of focusing just on the onboard experience which they choose to portray in other ads.

  • It's not that they don't focus solely on the journey, just that they show everything BUT the journey.

  • Seems like they are still making similar commercials, excellent.

  • When did United first start using "Rhapsody in Blue"?

  • I think it was 1987 or 88. I know it was used 1988.

  • I remember very well when United first introduced this commercial on tv.

Not only was the music very good, but the ad illustrates reality and living extremely well, too!

  • I think the airport terminal at 1:00 is newark, terminal A. Can anyone confirm. its hard to tell, but the pillars and windows might give it away.

  • It looks like EWR, yes when the mom arrives back and the DC-10 is in the window. I am sure the whole thing was filmed in NYC.

  • United is one of the best airlines.

  • word. definitely my favorite airline.

  • @ualcrj700 Correction, United *was* one of the best airlines. Perhaps the best. But that's been a long time.

  • @ualcrj700 lie.

  • @ualcrj700 they're one of the biggest, I wouldn't necessarily say they're the one of the best.

  • @ualcrj700 You are right all the way, I have and always will be a United customer

  • Ah yes, the days when United was friendly, now they are an airline fully of butholes!

  • :) United Will Always Be My Favorite Airline.

  • same here. def. my favorite airline

  • @veronicafanDA Oh I couldnt agree more, United is the only one I will fly

  • This song and commercial came out when I was getting the airline industry in my blood! And now, I've been w/ US Airways for 13 years!

  • I'm sorry...

  • ..... AWSOME

  • i loved the 727.I remember the last time I flow it I was a purser on a flight from IAD to MIA.I Juste loved that plane, I am glad some airlines still have it, hopefully I will get to fly it again one day.God old flight attendant memories! :-)

  • BEAUTIFUL, the music makes the commercial ! ! !

  • gene hackman does the voiceover for the commercials

  • that actress is married to scott bakula

  • Chealsea Fields

  • I love Rhapsody In Blue! It fits United Airlines so well. Its like the song is a perfect match! :) I am flying United next week to Orlando!

  • Don't know why but this commercial put a smile on my face.

  • Haha I never knew that United used "Rhapsody in Blue" back in the 1980s... Great commercial, thanks for posting!

  • They've been using it for 20 years. It's in all their advertising, product, everything.

  • corporations provide me with endless laughter - such vast ineptitude. such transparent illegitimacy -

  • somebody wanted to view them after all 700 plus views also i dont like the citizen commercial but i posted it anyway.
