If you made a punk rock record in those days especially a new wave record you automatically got a great review from the critics and tons of exposure on MTV. Punk rock never really was "underground" as the modern mythmakers would make you want to believe. The Kinks, the Who, the Kingsmen and the Rolling Stones had a huge influence on the British punk sound that the kids in LA and NYC copied in the US.
