  • I watch this movie more than 5 times :) but it still fresh in my mind. even though 11 years passed since this movie released.

  • greatest video I see this month.. :) .. thank you everyone for making this revolution possible.. :)

  • Great movie. Also, cygwin sucks balls.

  • Love "The free Software song", i coundnt believe that "free software" can be expressed through music language omg, its really amazing :).

  • And now we know why Bill Gates donates so much, its because he has a guilty conscience.

  • OMG! That is so cool!

That Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast as Eric Raymond!

  • I'm always surprised as to how few linux geeks are part of the Zeitgeist Movement. I've always seen a Functioning a Resource Based economy as the pinnacle of an open and free society.

  • At 54:54 Peace, Love, and Software!

  • Before I didn't understand why some people disliked Microsoft. This video was a real eye opener to a kinda new Linux user.

  • most epic start to a speech ever 48:05

  • This is a great documentary. I have watched it probably 20 times. I'm a big Stallman fan and think he is a remarkable individual.

  • If Microsoft would let users see what they were doing they may help to fix the crapy setup they have been dishing out for years. Linux has had floes but the users were able to help fined the problems and fix them as well as help to inprouve for futture programs. These changes are what makes Linux grate. I am working on my own linux based gaming system that lets a user tern a home laptop or pc into a gaming system. This system will support Playstation, Wii, & X Box controllers as well as games.

  • A little offended and taken back by 1:04:15 & 1:05:12.

...It won't stop me from making my slow switch to Linux though.

The rest of this is GREAT though =D

  • @TabooTongue Why are you offended exactly? (Genuine question)

  • the same software. and most people are used to windows so the common everyman would stick with it. Mac os would drop like a rock because gnu/linux>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> mac. I love gnu/linux, but sadly I dont see it getting popular enough anytime soon :(

  • With google putting in 1g fiber in kc I hope some of the computing sector moves to the midwest.

also linux will NEVER be the 'main' os. There are too many distros, and the 'community' as a whole will never get behind one distro the way they would need to for gnu/linux to get to have a substantial market share. even if all software suddenly went gpl windows would still be the main because 1: most software already works on windows and it still would so corps would stick with it so they can use

  • I see now that my time indication was not mapped to the video, so you can't jump right to it. I bet that if YouTube had been designed by Linux Torvalds, this wouldn't be a problem. Well, FWIW, just add #t anchor to the URL, followed by = and then number of minutes m and number of seconds s, and hit ENTER. That should do the trick. (Also... the video was very good. I just DLd it from TPB and watched it. I sincerely hope it is copyleft.)

  • Take a look at the sequence from 0:28:48 to 0:28:56. Who is that mysterious man?! Oh no, is that?!... Yes! It's him! It's Flash! "My name is Wally West. I'm the fastest man alive. I'm the Flash." He appears several times throughout the video if you look closely. You get a glimpse of what it's like to be in his boots, from his own point of view, like at 0:28:28. Get a laugh!

  • @lucianomarconIT True, that shows a lot about our society

  • As some others recently died prominent figures of research and computers (first in born date order) John McCarthy and Dennie Ritchie who worked themselves with DEC-machines creating one or the most both popular language AI language and Operating system (i.e Unix) respectively, on which something both played in Stallman's later work. However this didn't count as an evil character played when Pdp made up a rather bad reputation from its DEC extinction (1983) and many of its works somehow got lost.

  • In fact both Richard Stallman and Bill Gates share a common history they had developed products of the DEC PDP-10 machine, when some years later DEC ceased to develop its Jupiter project to develop a desktop version of the Mainframe, so many programs were considered "obsoleted", i.e ITS. Other companies developed in-house versions of it as consequence of DEC's demise, one one of the earliest computing users networks, Compuserve, until 2009 bought-up and Cisco's co-founder XKL run it.

  • Soon, the monetary sistem will be fall and Gates and all those big companies will be as common as others.... just wait a while...

  • @juanda3310 I live in hope. The system will collapse eventually no matter what happens, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a little push and speed things up a bit. Anyone else in favour of a run on the banks?

  • I'm your worst nightmare :D

    I like this~

  • i find stallman a little slow...LOL

  • where i'm from everything is free linceses we don't pay for shit lol

  • This documentary changed my life for the better.

  • @widlyscuds1 I used Windows for 16 years, then I started using Linux and I did all the usual crap of trying to run my windows programs in Linux, but this is the wrong way, but over time I stopped needing to do this and all my windows programs dissapeared and I deleted windows from all my computers and I am in love with Linux and even just using a Windows machine for 5 minutes makes cringe cos Linux does it better and faster.

  • @lucianomarconIT He's donating all his monies to charities to hope it does something, when the money he has was brought to him by greed anyway.

  • for now, linux seems to me like an os for a select few and a closed group of developers although it has been a long time. when I will easily find dedicated drivers instead of generic, ability to play all the windows games, to send files over an yahoo messenger (or other) with all it's functionality, etc etc... then microsoft is dead. I love the android style of thinking.

  • @assfau1t

I have been using Pidgin as an multiprotocol IM client. Give it a go. It works on almost any platform.

  • @stutek I used Pidgin for years then one day i decided I would actually click on Kopete and it's 10X better than Pidgin! it has all pidgins features but all set out perfectly and has loads of themes which can be downloaded and selected from within it. File transfer works perfect, somebody sends you a file and it says accept/reject in the chat, if somebody sends you an image, you get a preview in the chat window.. Webcam and mic work right off the bat aswell.

  • @assfau1t Ability to play all the windows games?? Linux is not Windows, Linux has it's own programs and games, running windows programs on linux just happens to be a project somebody started, it's not a goal of linux for people to take their windows programs and be able to run them on linux, What you should be saying is, When game developers start releasing Linux versions of popular games then microcrap is dead.

  • @fatriff I know that... but Linux itself is something that somebody started. right? developers making stuff for linux? HAHAHAA! money follows money. but where there are no more people, there is no more money. So I think we have to steer this in out favor and "grow" as many new linux users as possible. over time the transition will be complete and they will HAVE to comply. until then we need windows compatibility. I know I do and I'm putting linux on hold for now.

  • @fatriff ok... "Linux is not Windows"... no shit! I'm out of my cave now... when da fuck do you think we'll play RAGE on linux huh? never like that... I'm a part of a graphic design team working on improving the linux visuals. we're not out yet. why? because of narrow minded people like the "no way! no skins!" so called developers that want to keep it all to themselves... fuck that! whatever happened to "by the people FOR THE PEOPLE"?!? I certainly am not doing it for no money or donation...

  • @assfau1t Well, regarding games, There's hardly any games which won't run via wine, things have really improved this year, Steam works, all the steam games run perfectly, Onlive works, that's a ton of the top consoles/pc games right there, gaming on linux is now a reality for those who want it even if it is using wine. Native linux games are becoming so good now that they are becoming really popular, look at the Humble Bundles, loads of cross platform games.

  • @fatriff thank you for responding so kindly to my "not so kind post". I'm just a dreamer. a dream that will solve all the problems... hopefully open source will accomplish that and the donations will make it worth it in the future...

  • You can release whatever you like for linux, nobody can stop you, put it up on a site of your own and people will use it. There's also Gnome-look you can stick themes and skins on.

  • @assfau1t all what you mentioned is already available. nvidia offers binary drivers for linux which are for the end-user the same thing as the ones on windows.

  • damn it why do they play diablo 2 like music xD

    WANT diablo 3...on linux ^^

  • Z E I T G E I S T

  • @widlyscuds1 I work in the sever room at Microsoft, we run Solaris.

  • @JMrsh5

    That's hilarious.

  • Stallman is the one person in this vid who i trust

  • Enlightening!

  • Dnload the audio from this video at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • ive watched this like 8 times already i cant get enough

  • "Think of Richard Stallman as... the great philosopher. And think of me as the engineer" Even though you [Linus] used the GNU C compiler... So....

  • Comment removed

  • What is this "Windows" thing everyone keeps going on about? ;)

  • @popejimbo1 It's a hole in a wall that you can use to see what's happening on the other side and let air and light through. Similar to windows on you computer which you can imagine as a "holes in the interface that you see programs through", if that can help you understand the concept that they call "windows" in architecture.

  • @Sugardude I'm not entirely sure if that was some sort of sarcasm, or if you genuinely thought I was asking for an explanation of what a window is. Lol.Which was it?

  • @popejimbo1 It was a joke.

I like turning common metaphors around. Like a desktop is a place you can put your stuff while you're working and where you keep important stuff, like your computer desktop.

  • @Sugardude Fair enough mate.

  • @popejimbo1 I think they're talking about those things that break!!!-_- Broken Windows... Sucks

  • @AceofRazgriz2011 I think that would be hard since Microsoft keeps on adding their API layers to provide incompatibilities. But I think that's how most companies behave; they try to lock in their products as much as possible so that competitors won't stand a chance getting a foot in the door.

  • After having used GNU/Linux for a year now, I feel somewhat icky/disgusted to use Windows or any closed-source/non-free OSes and applications. It's feels like I have to put up with using Windows in places or situations where I have no other choice. I'm very grateful towards all the developers and helpers in the free software community for their effort and collaboration and I'm very lucky to have found it.

  • @widlyscuds1 Yes, your mind is allowed to expand using GNU/Linux. I'm still pretty new to GNU/Linux, but for the one full year being with it I have had so much fun taking it apart, turning it upside down and really see how computer works. And if your grown mind still would like to grow some more, you can even view and change the source code. There's no limit to what you can experiment. Microsoft OTOH wouldn't want to expose all the details their hired developers work for.

  • And for the jackass wildlyscuds1… I first used Linux at age 18 and I'm 19 so it's not an age phase so fuck off and get back to ur mom's basement playing WoW -=D

  • I was watching this on my LMDE netbook, and it's just inspiring for me, now my passion for Linux has grown even more :) I accidentally wiped Windows 7 from my netbook to install Ubuntu 10.10 and I called this an Epic Fail, but it wasn't a fail, it was my computer breathing better and happy =D Linux user since 2010

  • This is where the vocal douchebag users make the rest of us users look bad.

  • @widlyscuds1 I agree!

  • @widlyscuds1 Yet, another substanceless "so-called" argument.

  • @widlyscuds1 Yeah, a toy, right. Could you please tell mee why it is that quite a few ISPs are productively using this "toy"?

It might be true that Linux isn't that much of an alternative for your standard mainstream user, and more for developers or as production servers. This does not make it a toy in any way, or does it?

I wouldn't say that Linux or other Open Source SW is "by definition" better/superior, but neither is proprietary SW. It rather depens on what you yourself need/want.

  • @widlyscuds1 and are assuming that because I am in an age bracket where I start to go through puberty that this somehow makes me like Linux and is just a "stage" that I will "outgrow eventually" when in reality this has nothing to do with it and in the end you are just left as someone that civilization could do without.

  • @widlyscuds1 Actually I am 14 close but you were wrong.Linux however has nothing to do with this question that you asked. All I am saying is that you do not know much about computer because if you did you would like Linux and see that it is superior to the other options. Now however I must say that by you asking if I am 15 and the rest of what you said that followed it sounds like you are just some arrogant person with nothing better than to try and make your self seem bigger,

  • @widlyscuds1 lol you obliviously do not know what you are talking about. Linux is by far better than windows and makes a community from all the people that use it.windows does nothing more then just run programs.Linux run programs allows you to grow with your mind in computers begin to understand more things and not have to pay for the information which the internet was supposed to do but is not free as linux or its software.

  • And like the movie says, it's a great operating system for developers, but as far as it reaching mainstream users, it's slowly getting there, thankfully with Ubuntu. Though to get that last little bit of Windows users, like other comments below, they need to get wine working better or some native alternative, especially for gamers and adobe programs (Photoshop, Flash, etc). Some of my friends won't join because they can't get Photoshop to work smoothly and find Gimp confusing.

  • @xCyberFang Nope, they don't need to get Wine working better, they just need a larger user base then the developers will start releasing their games and programs on Linux as well.

  • Good movie. It's now definately inspiring me to become a programmer on the linux platform.. but I still need to pick up a few books and get started on the basics of programming. I can't even figure out how to compile anything in any IDE they always give errors haha :P.

  • @AceofRazgriz2011 Hold on, WINE was in Beta this entire time?!

  • 3:30 ... Data with an afro!?

  • at letter at 7:30 makes u think bill gates is having his period

  • Linux is the most awesome awesome super nova epic OS.

But you will never kill Windows unless games work better on Linux under some COMPLETE native alternative to Wine.

  • @JamerTheProgrammer Games work perfectly in GNU/Linux. It's just that game makers aren't thrilled at satisfying the still tiny market. Imagine I created a game for Mac OS, then someone else tries to run the game on Windows, that person can't say "Windows can't run this game", because it's the other way around: the game won't run on Windows, because it wasn't built for it. So let me help you rephrase your sentence: "But you will never kill Windows unless game makers make more games for Linux..."

  • don`t understand that simple example? If I bought a car and the producer forbid to share it with my wife, friends and so on? Would it be fair? And thats how propriatary software works. Is a little bit weird.

  • Linux Mint and Arch.. the best :)

  • thumbs up if u watched this on windows

  • W00T ARCH LINUX!!!

  • Linux is alright, but just that... When I forget to update a software ,it refuses to play... there is no "remind me later" button... It isn't faster from what I could tell...

and I dig Windows 7's snap window feature...

  • @Spec0pps117 depends on the hardware. not going to be offensive, just saying. and gnome 3 and unity and kde can all have what the snap feature is. just saying. and i can ignore updates and it works, but i usually update for the sake of it. but idk any reason why it would not work if not updated (besides dependencies and essential libraries, etc.). oh well. give a dif distro a go or try whatever. just whatever works for you!

  • @Spec0pps117 ubuntu sends update request automatically

  • @Spec0pps117 Linux is alright and just that ? well i guess its a great win for it since your comparing LINUX ( witch is just the kernel ) to a all operating system (windows 7) but regardeless to your eyecandy tast of aero snap feature, just have a look at compiz grid function, or gnome 3 desktop set, or kde as well.

  • @stardevelin okay...

  • After watching this video i realized that it took over an hour ;-)

  • 1 hour and 14 minutes into the thing and linus detracts the audience's attention. I like the guy, but htat was knda a dick move

  • Passwords arent evil, its how i stop my idiot family from downloading crap i dont need

  • 1:14:28 look at Stallman's outfit and then look at his shoes. Fucking hilarious XD he's my idol!

  • All Hail Linux !!!!!

  • Ironically enough the code being displayed near the start includes the header "Windows.h" which is only available on Windows ;).

  • lamest waste of video evar!

  • @acidnine9 lol duh its a documentary dummy

  • I had installed ubuntu and have noticed these:

    1) Not good performance , you can used to it but its not fast ! At least not like windows or other linux distro

    2) Common problem on every linux distro was bad HD video performance it can play hd video but you can see that performance is low not like windows

    3) Bad flash video performance

    4) Filesystem is not fast ? copy time takes much time to copy files

    5) Most of the software are hobbyist little apps not very usefull. Not much apps.

    itsnot ready

  • @technologyvictim ignore people who work for Microsoft aka technologyvictom, what u have wrote here is a job like what bill gates wrote to developers 07:33, Ubuntu is faster and been tested on number of times comparisons (especially with my self), Has HD and works fine unless u have a crappy pc that would go same with any os, Has same flash performance because its a same program dummy, Filesystem not fast? lol idiot, Most software are hoppiest is wrong, theres anbesia and other games lol

  • @technologyvictim other thing is research and quit microsoft while ur ahead!

  • Peoples related to Linux really wants to improve the world..!!Linux rocks

  • microsoft is cheating even he buy skype!!!

  • 1:16:00 Linux party :) buahahaha

  • WTF? This film is about free software and stuff, but it is not licensed with an appropriate license!

  • 1:05:11 I'm surprised. In academics lefties are popular and lefties are often "Stalin was good uncle and Soviet Union did nothing wrong to anyone" brainwashed.

  • @Tome4kkkk lefties? if u mean what that actually means than they are favored in most parts of society but just are brainwashed sheeps in life.

  • As an addicted Apple user; I say: Long live GNU!

  • Toward the end of the document, it went from the IPO (worth $320) to showing that the stock price was only worth $4, almost instantaneously. What happened there?

  • I just love it soooo much that both Zeitgeist documentaries is in the related videos section. Resource based economy and open environment is the future.

Check out those documentaries if you haven't seen them yet.

    Cheers xD

  • Just another note, MS as over that past few years increase the amount of beta and peer reviews of their software.

  • Nice movie, but there are other proprietary software companies besides MS, its unfortunate that the director headed down a blatant bias based movie and present MS as the sole enemy.

    I'm a Linux Admin.

  • 5 dislikes run Windows !!!

  • I searched " tosh beats yoga ball challenge " wtf is this video???

  • 5 people work for Microsoft!

  • @gadgetmanubuntu they are also gay

  • Is there by any chance a sequel to this documentary that covers the 1st decade of linux in the 21st century?

  • Nice documentary ! :D

  • puta ki pariu video demorado é foda -.-'

  • Awesome!!!

  • awesome movie!

  • 1 person was using windows

  • windows is being used as most people hack ,crack or pirate the software on it

30% of the internet is warez and torrentz

but as time goes and presenting CLOUD computing or CLOUD storage i think that microsoft will be history and linux will grow stronger day by day

    so FUCK M$

  • My popcorn has lots of free Kernels!

Linux will never replace Windows no matter how bad people want it to. It's been around for 30+ years and its about 5% used in the PC market.

I'm not downing Linux in any way, I personally use it on one of my laptops, but being realistic, it will never have the market that Microshaft does. Large corporations are not going to revamp all of their systems, and retrain all of their users to use a different OS. Good Vid. Thanks for all of your hard work.

  • Praise Tux! There is only one GNU, and Linux is one of it's kernels!

  • @67576856666478964567 what about beastie the bsd daemon

  • @67576856666478964567 its the only kernel who can be used by the masses.

  • LUNIX

  • @zarkoasenov

Lunix is for hackers, I seen it on TV.

  • @67576856666478964567 you are fucking retarded.

  • @Banshie

No, you're fucking retarded. Why don't you do a search for "Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?" and see the video about Lunix hackers. Pay attention, Corky.

  • @67576856666478964567 Seriously fuck of troll. Linux* and its just an operating system you probably think OS X is exclusively used by Homosexuals, and by that logic Windows must be used exclusivly by Retards like your self.

  • @Banshie

I've been a Debian developer for 7 years. I know what I'm talking about. It's called a joke, you fucking moron. If you don't know about the "Lunix hackers" then you must live under a rock. I gave the fucking video which I referenced, the one about the son who is a computer hacker who uses LUNIX. Is it my fault you're too stupid to research it for yourself?

Go fuck yourself, zealot. Without people like me your ass probably wouldn't be using a GNU/Linux OS.

    Think before you speak.

  • @67576856666478964567 Saying your a Debiant developer doesn't really command much authority, If i fixed three bugs over 100 years, it would qualify me as a debian developer for 100 years, also its interesting YOU calling ME a zealot. in all regards the point is mute.

  • @67576856666478964567

    lol yeah..of course.

  • @zarkoasenov LINUX

  • Comment removed

  • fucking awesome

  • Good stuff.. thanks for sharing...

  • I love the GNU LINUX philosophy great video

  • Love it!

  • Thats it! Linux rulezzz:-)

  • @christo19740801 and Bsd
