my car is pretty well idiot-proofed with the parking brake, if the parking brake isn't set, it won't let you take the keys out, it will only turn as far back as the AC position (i.e. the radio and cig. lighters are still powered) so you'd know if you forgot to set it, but if the parking brake was BROKEN on the other hand.....
