Thanks to YouTube and volunteers we have some great video of yesteryear. Boyington has an interesting background: BS in Air. Science from Univ of Wash in 1934... very early for such a degree. Shame on Unif of Wash student governors for blackballing a Black Sheep's memorial. I read that his son was also a flyer, graduate of US Airforce Academy. Flying and university graduation must run in the family
I met Pappy at an airshow in Erie Colorado, it must have been around 1980. Shook his hand and told him I had read his book many times. He said "Good for you."
"Boyington was officially credited with 3.5 Japanese aircraft destroyed in the air and on the ground, but AVG records suggest that one additional "kill" may have been due to him. (He afterward claimed six victories as a Tiger, but there is no substantiation for that figure.) " Many air to air kills are not credited due to camera failure and no eyewitnesses to back up the pilot. Why the fuck would you jump all over his grandson over a discrepency of 2 or 3 kills? Congrats, you're an asshole.
@ReddSept There was a jersey city doctor in the 60's I went to. He had AVG reunion photos all over the walls of his office. The guy was in his 70s then and he went skiing. From what I read about Boyington was that at one point he was in debt. So he wanted to get paid for the planes he destroyed on the ground also.
At 500 bucks for every enemy plane the AVG shot down Boyington wanted to get paid for the ones he straffed and blew up on the ground. Because he was heavily in debt.
I have to say that I am proud to be the Grandson of Greg "Pappy" Boyinton... The best fighter pilot in the history of the USMC... 28 Kills during WWII... 6 with the Flying Tigers & the rest with the 214 Black Sheep SQD... He was one hell of a man... David
I couldn't agree more!! He was more than one of the greatest fighter pilots in the USMC!! I'm half way through his book and intrigued by his experiences....especially with his ability to face adversity on so many levels while coming through with so much sucess in the end. I would love to know more about the man!! Cheers!!
@DavidYakima Pappy was a personal hero of mine(my dad served USMC '57-'67) I was a 17yo JROTC cadet Ltc when Pappy died in '88, had to serve detention for flying the school flag at half mast without consent from Sr Army Instructor. Detention well served, cause my SAI thanked me for bypassing state law to honor a Vet.
This is great! Thanks for posting. I enjoyed reading Pappy's autobiography as well as a biography written about him by another author. I liked the TV show too. 5 Stars!
Pappy was in the AVG. Better known as The Flying Tigers. They were getting paid for every jap plane they shot down.Pappy destroyed some on the ground by strafing a jap airfield. He wanted to get paid for them also because he had a lot of bills. But he was a great fighter pilot.

He signed my airshow pass and I still have it.

Boyington is a great American, but his comments have to be taken with a grain of salt. Read "Black Sheep One" by Bruce Gamble.
