@MissElle0x Not on my sheet music it doesn't (Augener's Edition circa 1970). It definitely has E natural. The Eb seems to be a more recent fashion. Chopin's original score had E natural, which sounds much more correct and musically logical, but more recently someone discovered a copy purportedly belonging to one of Chopin's pupils, which had a flat sign added by hand. It was concluded for some reason that this was a "correction" by Chopin himself, although that seems a bit tenuous to me.
Thanks for posting this. I just ordered a copy of the compact disc. In my opinion, Pogorelich's rendition stands out head and shoulders above so many of the heavy-handed stumbling and doomy recordings available. A piece like this should be like a comforting blanket of darkness, not a bleak cloud of impending doom, gloom and foreboding. Pogorelich's rendition is so subtle and so restrained, just perfection!
I would have to disagree that this pianist has captured the tone of the piece as I am convinced there are a few discrepancies with the dynamic symbols written by Chopin himself...
this is so cinematic, I could imagine this being playing in a movie orchestrated or with just basic piano. Its such a spectacular piece.

He has more respect for the dynamics than most players. A true genius of our times.

What a pity he plays Eb instead of E on the last chord of bar 3.

@tonymountifield On the sheet music, it says to play Eb not E.

@tonymountifield Well, I didn't know that, thank you for educating me. However, I prefer the Eb :-)

@MissElle0x MY sheet music says E naturalized... I believe both were played by Chopin himself - nobody will ever know for sure

this piano is out of tune.

@Suckyea that adds to the whole pathetic tone of the piece. haven't you ever listened to an organ on an old LP? Sounds more creepy that way.
