Architects are rarely used to design those aweful develpments you mention. The design comes mostly from the mind of the developer and the hand of a draftman who is paid by the hour to put lines on paper. Elements are borrowed without consideration for function or proportion, plans are awkward and contrived. There is no design, really. Instead a kit of unrelated parts are forced togther to achieve a "look". A qualified architect will make all the difference.
Architects can help .... but all of those awful housing developments that look a little off all had architects who presumably knew what they were doing -- or, maybe it was the developer who pushed for some of the design flaws.
great recommendations; sadly, the interview was given in quite possibly one of the most inauthentic kitchens I've ever seen.
