Best looking.........your got to be joking,,,,,A good engine no doubt, but come on thats a big call,, But well 24571 hits you know how to stir up some interest.....MMMmmm my best looking loco (steam).........GWR Castle class.....and I,m an Aussie.
A lot of my fellow Yanks noticed similarities with the N&W J class, the New Haven I-5's, and someone even mentioned the Espee 4449. But, did anyone note the firebox? Very similar to the PRR Belpaire, used on the K-4's (4-6-2) or the M-1's (4-8-2) classes.
Well considering how many driving wheels that thing has compared to a 38er its no wonder.
38's were good at what they were designed for. Flying Scotsmans visit to Australia proved fast doesn't automatically mean you can go hard up a constant 1 in 33 without sticking up.
The 1 in 40 grade Lithgow to Zig-Zag is made to look easy for TWO 38 class with a LIGHT load. Try a long and heavy goods train with FOUR steam locos ! Last part of-
Garretts- Double AD 60 Class with Coal Trains near Newcastle

A somewhat better shot of the two 38s class in action-
Steam Trains - 38's Over The Mountains (Part 1 of 6)
That lead engine is a smaller version of the N&W J-Class 4-8-4. BTW: There was once a wide-gauge 4-8-4 that looked like a Pennsy T-1 that I haven't heard about for a while. Is that one still running?
You might be thinking of the south australian 520 class, they were 5'3" gauge. The one that was running is at steam ranger at Mount Barker.currently not running. thanks for looking
ok thanks, didn't mean best so much as big steamers... with their whistles.. best regards.. oh, here in richmond , va we have the worlds only triple overpass for trains.
Excellent!!!

Best looking steam train? Although I like this loco that is debatable
southparkline1 10 months ago
The best looking steam engine, in my opinion, is the streamlined Gresley A4 Pacific.
sparkygl0s 11 months ago
@sparkygl0s Have to agree. For Aussie read American. In the US they built them for power, not looks.

@cuza1989 - Nope, 3801 was made by Clyde Engineering, while 3830 was built in-house by the NSWGR at their Chullora Workshops, unless I'm mistaken.

that is one ugly green blob, look up PRR k4 in Tyrone

Yes the mallard is an A4 class locomotive. you can still see other A4 trains running such as `The Union of South Africa.

i would agree but the A3s and A4s look better(ps the A4 still holds the worlds fastest steam train record of 126.1 mph)

The most beautiful steam loco must surely be in the U.K. - LNER A4 Pacific - and the fastest @ 126mph as Mallard has shown.

For me the best looking loco is the GWR castle class. Being from the west midlands.

mitch2052 3 years ago
That's what I was thinking. I thought it looked like a cross between an N&W J-Class and an NYC Hudson.
fafnir242 3 years ago
No it's not.
It's essentially a no-frills New Haven I-5. The basic designs are very much alike, right down to the streamlining.
Chappy3801 3 years ago
Ahhhh, I see. Thank you.
RDG484 3 years ago
@RDG484 If it's a smaller version of the J-class, how come it's not a 4-8-4?
