I remember buying this 45 rpm back in '79! Great song. I didn't know John sang so well. I thought Dan Seals did most of the lead singing. This is a beautiful song!!!!!!!
When I first moved to Nashville about 10 years ago, I saw this mofo sing this song live at a writer's night at Douglas Corner. As in this video, HE DID NOT GIVE CREDIT TO, OR ACKNOWLEDGE IN ANY WAY, THE WRITER OF THE SONG, TODD RUNDGREN. It was as if he had wanted the dumb Nashville hicks to think he had written it. Apparently, this is a pattern. Sad.
England Dan and John Ford Coley did a delicious re-make of this tune, adding power and substance to it --and making it famous. But I agree, would have been nice for him to give credit to the originator --Todd Rundgren and Utopia. It's a very spiritual and positive creation. Thanks to both artists, and whoever posted this video for this Anthem!
England Dan and John Ford Coley did a delicious re-make of this tune--giving it more substance and power (I feel) --and they made it famous. But I agree, it would have been gracious of Ford Coley to give credit to the originator --as long as he's commenting on it. That would add positive spiritual energy to his intro, and actually give him more credit too! It's a very spiritual and meaningful song. It was originally written, arranged, and recorded by Todd Rundgren and his band Utopia.
Has an extra poignancy now with the 'and when you're near the end' line following Dan Seals' untimely death. Truly great uplifting song. Been one of my favourites since it came out. Can vividly remember running to tape it as a 17 year old when it came on the radio! Todd Rundgren has done a cool swing version of it on his album 'With a Twist'
Dan sang most all the songs, but he's dead, and John has to make a living, so if you like their music, it's nice that he's still carrying the torch. I don't have a problem with nostalgia acts that aren't exactly what they should be as it's no different than any other marketing ploy in business today, and at least you get some good music for the money. This was a great Todd Rundgren song.
This song was a hit for Todd Rundgren as well when he was with Utopia. This is a great song that all of us should be listening to. If LOVE is the answer what are we doing? Certainly not a good job of it. Peace out.
those filipino backup singers and intrumentalists cannot keep up.. i guess, they are playing the song to what they were used to be a "reggae"? they should know how to jam ..
i was in jfc asian tour in the phils 2008,. it was pretty bad concert i may say,. but still seeing him, unfornately less dan seals, was still a great experience. i love england dan and john ford coley!
I too thought it was a little ungracious not to have mentioned TR in the intro....only because it was a lengthy intro and there was an opportunity to drop it in. No big deal though.
If I had to choose my number one song of all time I guess this would have to be it. We had this on vinyl, then I bought a cassette and after that a cd. I love everything about this song.
Really nice version, but why doesn't he come out and state the fact that it was a cover of a song by Todd Rundgren? It sounds like he's taking credit for it, which is kind of...wrong.
I agree with you... it is a beautiful song. I've never heard a bad version of it. That being said, crediting the songwriter would have been appropriate.
Wow! That really is a great Todd Rundgren song he's doing there! His chat sounds a little like he's trying to take credit for it. If you want to hear what it's REALLY supposed to sound like... check out UTOPIA LOVE IS THE ANSWER.
