I like Morley, he usually talks sense. If he were in a (decent) band he'd be a spokesman for a generation... but he's only a writer so he's a self opinionated wanker. Always been the way... from Bangs to Kent to Burchill to Parsons. People always get precious about the vibe surrounding a band and feel uncomfortable being told why they like that band.
Opinions are what makes the whole debate about an individuals music worth discussing, I could listen to Gordon Browns opinion about the Fall (if he knew who they were, and idoubt that !) and still think it valid even if i didnt agree one little bit, anyones opinion is valid to them, the point being it doesnt matter does it? To have that difference of opinion is what matters surely?
Very true. My point is that those who you think would be most qualified to express a lucid opinion (ie writers) are the ones who are ridiculed most. But Liam can say 'This isn't history, this is Knebworth' and he's suddenly a wordsmith... then again I guess Kevin Rowlands and Ian Page disprove my point entirely. :)
@clivetemple Totally agrree. Morley ( and his sidekick maconie) always make interesting comments. Anyone can slag them off but wihout really saying why. You wouldnt be reading these comments, let alone writing them if you werent interested in opinions about the band.
@Broomehall Morley again "the fall has to have a elizabeth taylor richard burton element....a weird sexual element....a soap element". They gave too much of the doc to this prat spouting verbal diarorea.
Shame he's been so ravaged by the drink, Mark E.shall forever remain one of Britain's select few...I was scheduled to interview him in NYC one year,(but he wasn't concious enough to make it(!)I ended up interviewing one of the guitarists(lol)He still managed to put on an amazing performance later that night(as always)
So MES & The Fall are about "the attack of pop, the attack of rock." You learn something new every day..

watching the opening of this makes me wonder once more how Andy Kershaw ever got employed on television!

Like him or loathe him, Paul Morley knows his stuff, he is one of the more intelligent journalists in popular music, I should know I employed him!

John Peel cried the first time he listened to the Sgt peppers lonely album, because he thought nothing this good will be ever made again.
