@mrnac87 Hi, i will be also be in Chiang Mai then and do not worry many lanterns...(khom loys) are launched all the time during the evening and night time. You will not miss them, down by the river by the Narrawat bridge is a good place to watch, but you will see them everywhere, enjoy Loy Krathong.
This festival will be set on every full moon day in November
Position is near Mae Jo University, 20 km. north from Chiangmai downtown.
Don't worry, civil aviation authority would clear the sky especially for this. All flight to/from CNX will be postponed.
And surprisingly, there's almost no fire accident from these lanterns reported. 'Coz if you do it right, the fire will put out in the sky, no more harm when they land.
It was beautiful but did not fit the occasion. Loykratong is supposed to take place at bodies of water, not the sky. Tens of thousands of these hotair lamps are actually dangerous to flying airplanes and could cause fire if one were to drop down when fuel was not burned out.
@dhawatchai What goes up does come down, but there are no reported cases of a lantern coming down on fire and causing damage they rise and then burn out and drop back to earth. This is the annoyance because Thai people won't touch them for bad luck,so they litter the countryside and city scape until they somehow just disappear.
@dhawatchai It's Northern Thailand's traditional we've done it for more than hundred of years and no report about causing fire yet and we're put krathong in water too. So if you participated you will see candle light all over water and sky.
Those flying lantern can't even go up to 1000m (you can see it's burn out with naked eye) so it's just impossible to interfere with Air transporting but may be with low attitude aircraft like helicopter.
Thanks very much for this posting--this is without doubt one of the most beautiful and touching things I've ever seen. I hope all who launched their balloons had good luck and fortune! Chok dee khon Thai always!

.Pretty but I don t think is worth the risk.Save the planet

@pgarla1 perhaps try saving the planet by not buying a computer that is so much more toxic than paper and wax.
